Not an easy person to interview at all. I think it's because he's a say what you mean and mean what you say kinda individual and has no time for bs. I like that about him. When famous people are interviewed the person asking the questions is sometimes too busy kissing ass or asking stupid questions. Ain't nobody got time for that. Absolutely. Agree wholeheartedly. My mentor said that a good interviewer isn't a fan, but a curious and well-informed stranger. It is incredibly hard to turn off your fan side, especially when talking to someone who you have enjoyed since the age of 14, but I did my best. Can only try to do better. One thing worth noting here is this is my third Maynard interview. This was the first time I was even allowed to mention TOOL, but only in the context of his overall history as a fan. I was so conscious that if I went too hard here I could easily lose him. That doesn't mean that I haven't been kept up at night by the fact I didn't ask the below. I hope one day I get to do a TOOL deep dive with him, and also give fans the opportunity to submit their own questions. The ones I wish I asked: Your first band Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty included a prescient manifesto with its first $5 tape. What you mention here is reflected in the lyrical content of "Aenima." What other artists’ manifestos played into your thinking while writing that? How does it feel to know you were on the path, then? It took Tool seven shows to get signed. Who were the coolest people who liked your band that early? You said the primal scream was the key to making it sound sincere in your book. Who are the screamers you most admire? Thanks for watching dudes, and taking the time to comment. It means a lot, I just want to do right by you guys, and honour the privilege it is to spend time with my idols.
Haha. Definitely why usually he never allows TOOL questions, at all. Gotta say, if he thought mine sucked, trust me - he would have got off the call quicksmart, and never allowed me to mention TOOL. Not saying I asked everything I wanted to, but gave it good crack.

I can relate to alot of Maynard's lyrics, he definitely helps me through the hard times. Every song is a piece of art instead of just a song for the most part.
I am glad Maynard did this interview, his tone doesn’t imply he was excited to do it, more like, I have chores to do like ducks to feed and vineyards to manage. As a hardcore Maynard fan, I clicked this video looking for something I haven’t seen or heard from Maynard before, but in the end he delivered and I respect what he’s carved out in his life and the inspiration he has generated for artists and fans alike through all these years. I like that he didn’t sell the farm and compels everyone to spiral out, and keep going.
He sounds like that in most, if not all, of his interviews. I think that's just his tone. He sings a lot, if think he would find the least exhausting way of speaking, that'd be my guess.
I love that Maynard said he and Carina are like twins. I've tried to shove her music in people's ear holes by saying "she's Maynard with a wig". Seriously, if you haven't heard her solo work, do yourself the favor.

@@skylersojka6742 I'm so sorry I don't like Tool as much as the other bands. I think I just need to get familiar with the new stuff. This is beyond awesome, you are one of the best interviewers I have ever encountered. You are very insightful, and your questions seem thought out and genuine. Huge fan.
Great interview, took a while to get through to him but you managed it pretty well I thought! I once had the privilege of interviewing Danny at a listening party before the release of 10,000 Days and was slightly relieved, as interviewers were either given slots with Danny, or Maynard and Justin together. Often wondered how I would have gone with Maynard, as the interviewer in that slot while I was talking to Danny said it was really hard work. I did speak to Justin briefly separately afterwards and he was really cool, friendly and down to earth. I think Maynard actually is too, if you build some kind of rapport with decent questions and conversation. Anyway well done, enjoyed the interview!
Appreciate you trying to squeeze out some Tool secrets, but to no luck of course haha. And amazing how he throws Gene under the bus. Enjoyed it very much. Cheers!
Probably cuz the riff was easily translated to sound like tool. I remember hearing Maynard say his favorite plant vocals are in the evening (maybe it was another member) Anyway I can’t imagine tool covering black dog or the ocean or Kashmir. Even apc covering when the levvee breaks is weird to me it’s not bad but not as special as no quarter.
Little upset she didn't ask him if there could be a Maynardville. She asked Buzz if there could be a Buzzywood, and I was all for it. Brilliantly inspiring conscious thought. "THINK FOR YOURSELF!"
Dude. Asking Buzz if he'd be down with having a theme park created in his name was the most random question to come to my mind in 14 years of doing this, but you're bloody right. That question's worth a repeat. I would LOVE to go to Maynard's theme park, that would be an absolute trip. Thanks for watching - CR
I am going to see Tool for the second time this May. The first time in 2019 I carried around my baby girl in my belly (I was 7 months pregnant) maybe this time will happen something similar.. What a way to start a life :)
Jim is different than most other artists. I went to HS with him and we wrestled on the team together for 2 or 3 years. We could have become good friends, but I guess we had those already. Most artists are misfits in school, (and if rational, that is where all individual greatness comes from),---like I was more like, (never got over being the new kid I guess). But Jim wasn't a misfit, not that I saw in 3 years anyway. He fit in pretty good with everybody, and was his own man (young man), at the same time. I remember asking him, when were were talking about a cute gal who like him and he liked a bit I think to, "What would you do if you were out and she pulled out a joint?" He said, "Then I would not see her anymore.". No!--that is a good thing! But I guess that changed in GR art school. (Sorry Jim, for either direction there man, smiling here) The only thing I saw that pointed into a career of Music, was the Kiss posters plastered on the inside of his locker walls/door. Lots of people did well with Music, (I don't know how many know why though), and I love to see people doing well in what they love to do. But Jim is different. He could have been great at anything he set his mind to, from sports, (what we do when we were not taught math), to top achievers of a free society. I know it, and I am sure he knows it. But here is something else I know. We have all been sabotaged by the progressive movement, (Stop it. I know what I am taking about),---and with a brain in our head, (does not come with a college degree today), the free enterprise system in our hands, (where it started, and could only start), and the freedom of the citizens to compete in that free enterprise system, -------------------we all could have done better. Every one of us, even if your hair is purple. :) You told me you loved the song in the locker room Jim. Play a version of it. "Dream on, Dream until your dreams come true." (even though we know that also takes action, as you have proven well sir. Congrats). Doug in Michigan
His son's name is Devo, thought it safe to assume they were a big deal ... but hey, Joni Mitchell and Sabbath are a cooler place to start, happy for him to redirect me, haha.
Same account that just left a comment on the Serj interview here. Same deal right here. I can’t get through this. I started it, have plenty of time to finish, but just really can’t.
Thank you! 20:12 when he starts singing KISS melodies and making a face may be that warming moment, I reckon you're bang on. To be honest witnessing that magic will keep me warm at night for years.
A good interview, especially given the confinements imposed on the interviewer. I suspect MJK had many unpleasant direct encounters with "Tool-Anon" so I can hardly blame him, though. This is after all the fan base that seeks to unlock cosmic secrets from songs like Disposition, which is probably just about mood swings.
@ 3:40 mins in that's actually a philosophy of Bruce Lee"s. "it is like a finger pointing to the moon, do not look at the finger or you'll miss all that heavenly glory" Enter the Dragon
@@DR.DisInfect It is indeed. And just to my liking. Someone pretentious would consider it unfinished. But, that's kind of my point, That the expectation would be some decked out study or studio.
If you watch the Slash interview and watch this you see the difference between a person who's happy, down to earth and an all around cool dude. As opposed to a person who'd rather love watching you getting vaporized by a flamethrower than answering your questions....
Another point from the hearing of the listener. This is a problem with a lot of channels. The volume is too low on our end. I have a 340 watt wireless stereo cranked to full volume, and it is spiting out about 20% of what it can do. If there is any noise in the room, you can barely hear what the soft spoken Jim man is saying. I know it is possible to figure out all the volume factors, and turn them all up to full,---because some channels have no problem with it. It is easy to turn the volume down on our end if needed. I hope that helps. You do believe you are worth listening to, right? :)
They were like the in between alternative for disco & rock. It's pop rock which was referred to as bubble gum music at that time. Not too light & not too heavy just some commercial bullshit kinda like some frat dudes listening to Guns N Roses & thinking they're into metal
@Chip Chipperson it seems that way since a lot of rockstars listened to them although I think they went a bit far with the merchandise like the KISS condoms & coffin ⚰
I think bc they are an act which is showy in a way which entertains some people. There’s value in just focusing on the music but for live shows their pageantry may bring a certain audience.
also, if they ever do a live action Beavis and Butthead, can we ask MJK to play the hippie teacher? I would love to hear him sing Lesbian Seagull or something like it
The first time I ever heard a tool song was watching Beavis and Butt-Head with my grandma at the age of 11 it was sober. Huge fan they have never released a song I can't listen to.
Watching them together on the interviews seems like they enjoy eacothers company a lot more than just two musicians doing an interview but I got that vibe in Lars Ulrich's interview with him
I think they love one another very much- like brothers- but brothers often disagree on things, get on one another's nerves, test one another's patience. I think the bonds between all of the guys in Tool are extremely strong- they have had to be to survive the ups and downs of all of their individual personal journeys. I suspect any of those guys would do almost anything for each other if it was needed.
Great interview. If you're reading this and you have tickets for a Tool concert, i envy you and wish you a fu*king awesome time!

I've been listening to Pusifer, perfect circle for about about a week now. I haven't listened to none of them very much in a year or two.
Before that, I listen to nothing but those bands.
I caught my self dancing like a fool the other night!
Welcome home💓
But no tool!?
@@skylersojka6742 if it pops up on Pandora.😆
@@human-qp1mf tool is the best of Maynard for sure.
@@skylersojka6742 I'm so sorry I don't like Tool as much as the other bands.
I think I just need to get familiar with the new stuff.
When I hear a newer song I expect it to have everlasting feeling when I hear it.
Like, Grandcayon, we watched that video over and over.
I hope I'm not kicked out of the club now.
@@human-qp1mf Aenima is a great album
One of the best interviews ever for artists... thank you to the both of you.
We're all DEVO
This is beyond awesome, you are one of the best interviewers I have ever encountered. You are very insightful, and your questions seem thought out and genuine. Huge fan.
Always encouraging to hear great advice on making art and connecting things from the head of a great band.
Maynard hasn’t been significant since Green Jello !
Cheers!
Would have absolutely loved to know why they chose No Quater to cover. :) Great interview :)
Probably cuz the riff was easily translated to sound like tool.
I remember hearing Maynard say his favorite plant vocals are in the evening (maybe it was another member)
Anyway I can’t imagine tool covering black dog or the ocean or Kashmir. Even apc covering when the levvee breaks is weird to me it’s not bad but not as special as no quarter.

REVOLVER - "What's your proudest musical experiment?"
Maynard - "Uh, the one you haven't heard yet."
Best Fucking Answer Of All Time 😎
TOOL in concert. 23 of april 2022 in Royal Arena, Copenhagen, Denmark. 🇩🇰
Maynard being moon and rising cancer, completing Joni Mitchell who was also a cancer rising , and they are both artistically articulating! Kudos
You told me you loved the song in the locker room Jim. Play a version of it. "Dream on, Dream until your dreams come true." (even though we know that also takes action, as you have proven well sir. Congrats).
Doug in Michigan
Got weird tbh
Interviewer : "Devo I feel is a good place to start."
Maynard and myself : * * confused expression * *
His son's name is Devo, thought it safe to assume they were a big deal ... but hey, Joni Mitchell and Sabbath are a cooler place to start, happy for him to redirect me, haha.
@@revolver This recovery was just has good as always.
This was so good I couldn't stop watching it.
i cant belive two of my fav artists Maynard & Dimebag are Kiss fans!
Maynard's patience with these questions
I didn’t think it was that bad, could sense some anxiety though! To be expected tbh.
Ohhhhh shitttt Christina is
One of my favourite interviews
Ya she actually shut up when she needs too plus she is adjusting to the guy. Great job!
It’s not her first interview with James
Same account that just left a comment on the Serj interview here. Same deal right here. I can’t get through this. I started it, have plenty of time to finish, but just really can’t.
Thanks for the interview, really enjoyed it.
Well this was a pleasant surprise.
Really wanna go to the Chi show in March. Would be the sixth time seeing Tool. They never disappoint.
I will be there!
Awesome interview 👍 thanks Maynard - Revolver
Tough one, he's extremely intellectual but guarded. You warmed him up about the 18-20 minute mark. Good job.
Thank you! 20:12 when he starts singing KISS melodies and making a face may be that warming moment, I reckon you're bang on. To be honest witnessing that magic will keep me warm at night for years.
then you don't understand Maynard for shit. oh well. all good.
I love that Maynard has a sense of humor. It’s great
Most people have a sense of humor.
@@viking_nor I wouldn't be so sure of that anymore. Seems like at least half the world gets offended by everything these days.
The interviewer seems really stressed but I'm not surprised (if that's true). She handled it very well. Interesting interview, thank to you both 😊😊
I don't know what's funnier.... The sheer panic vaguely concealed by the interviewer or his recognition of it
A good interview, especially given the confinements imposed on the interviewer. I suspect MJK had many unpleasant direct encounters with "Tool-Anon" so I can hardly blame him, though. This is after all the fan base that seeks to unlock cosmic secrets from songs like Disposition, which is probably just about mood swings.
I enjoy all of your hard work and dedication too teach and entertaining 🤓🤓
Maynard wearing a Letterkenny shirt made my fucking week!
@ 3:40 mins in that's actually a philosophy of Bruce Lee"s. "it is like a finger pointing to the moon, do not look at the finger or you'll miss all that heavenly glory" Enter the Dragon
Background howling really takes off when he starts talking about Rollins around 28:10. The animal knows.
When he drops “The Microcosm and Macrocosm..” line I cracked up, just had to slip that in there really quick 😂
I hope someone else got the Letterkenny reference "hard no" when asked what his favourite hidden joke is in any of the tool songs 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent show 😂😂😂
His Instagram has a good amount of letterkenny stuff. Shoresy the dog for example
It sure does!
Lol Alex Grey definitely looks like he takes many many trips!!! Dig the art!!!
Revolver has taken the place of Rolling Stone. Good on ya. Stay away from politics. 🤣🤣❤️
Great interview but please turn up the volume. The ads are like 5 times louder than video
"ToolAnon" is now FOREVER!
I was seeing another time "Love Actually". Perfect film for Maynard...lol
Going to the concert here in Tacoma in January. Can't wait
I love to see it in oregon maybe next year... 🤟🏾🇵🇭
Love the tee shirt. Maynard is definitely one ply, bud.
Great Interview What a Legend MJK 👏
Or MJK but we get what you're saying
You are right thanks
Yeah. I can’t get into kiss. Even if you paid me a million dollars to love it, I just couldn’t. 🤣🤣🤘
I like that he did this interview from an unfinished basement.
At one of his million dollar properties around Sedona and Jerome and Cottonwood etc...
It is finished 🇫🇮
Lol 😂 lol
I fuckn love Maynards shirt!
💖🧙🏽♂️🙏🏽🛰🛰🛰🛰 and everything you can imagine forever
Grateful to you Sir.
I'm glad someone finally said it. I have no idea why anyone likes Kiss. I do not get it man.
The best part of this interview is Maynard's shirt.
The letterkenny shirt is great. This was a great video, thank you!
I didn't know the singer from Paramore does interviews
He knows the pieces fit
also, if they ever do a live action Beavis and Butthead, can we ask MJK to play the hippie teacher? I would love to hear him sing Lesbian Seagull or something like it
I actually went to an Englebert Humperdinck concert a couple years ago, and HE SANG IT!!!
The first time I ever heard a tool song was watching Beavis and Butt-Head with my grandma at the age of 11 it was sober. Huge fan they have never released a song I can't listen to.
I get the feeling Maynard and Adam aren't buddies but they want to solve the same puzzle.
They know the pieces fit ..
@@W.A.F Got me smiling :D
That’s actually a great way to put it. 🤘🏻
I suspect any of those guys would do almost anything for each other if it was needed.
fantastic stuff. Great interview. He said a lot of good things despite his initial demeanor. Even his shirt is standoffish.
