Foxcatcher tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Tatum), who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave (Ruffalo) and a life of poverty when he is summoned by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Carell) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Desperate to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, du Pont begins "coaching" a world-class athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral.
Directed by Bennett Miller. Written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman. Starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave and Sienna Miller.

Steve Carrell is such a fascinating actor
This was a movie that I've only seen once because it hit so hard. That was six years ago and I don't know if I can ever revisit it. Tragic but masterful film.

It’s always interesting and astonishing to me that his friends wanted to be there because Mark Ruffalo is the closest thing they will get to having the real Dave back…I love when Actors/Actresses bring people back to life. The beauty of movies.

Wrestling as a sport is not nearly appreciated as any other sport. Truth and most people do not realize the training and sacrifice involved either.
After all that the Olympics dropped wrestling from its roster.

Steve’s performance deserves far more recognition that it received. Sure, there’s a huge, day and night, difference between the real-life John Du Pont and Steve Carrell’s take. Du Pont in real life seemed a little happier and energetic, superficially. The brilliant twist of Carrell’s interpretation on Du Pont was portraying the internal aspects of Du Pont.
Mark and Channing absolutely nailed the mannerisms that wrestlers have. It's amazing. Some of the actual wrestling sequences are a bit silly considering how elite the level was when the film takes place, but it has to be that way for the film, so I don't blame them. Boxing and MMA movies are WAY more exaggerative and cheesy during competition scenes, so I'm just nitpicking. This is an underrated film that almost anyone can enjoy.
Ruffalo did such a beautiful job in portraying Dave.
What a masterpiece, so refreshing and rare to see a real genuine movie nowadays, the actors did a fenomenol job, a true gem.
He found the right story and still changed everything that happened.

@@shua-park yes I’ve seen the documentary, I just didn’t get what the person said the first time.
The thing is it’s not a documentary and it wasn’t portrayed as one. To fit all of this into one movie and capture the essence of what happened the timelines had to be altered and certain situations had to be changed and exaggerated to fit the narrative that things things weren’t actually over a course of a decade+. I think for what it is, the movie did a good job in trying to connect Mark and Dave’s time at foxcatcher farms. It’s also a great way to introduce the sport to people who have never had any interest. It’s important to be happy that the sport got to the big box office and told this story, as altered as it may be.
Like all movies that are “based on a true story” are. Difference being that this one wasn’t a stale cheap cliche film and was actually entertaining.

This was the doorway between Steve Carrell as Michael Scott to him having more serious roles. Great film

Fascinating story, beautifully told and acted. Capell’s performance is under-rated imo. Capote, Moneyball & this film are all masterful. Bennett Miller is an amazing filmmaker.
One of thing about this whole movie it's a good one Channing Tatum is such a great actor when I looked up real life wrestler name Mark Scultz we have the same birthday October 26 I found that out when it was our birthday last year.

Being from Philadelphia I certainly remember this whole story when it occured. Ill have to watch this movie. I remember reports that Dupont used to ride a WW2 tank around the grounds. That he had secret rooms, a cocaine addiction, and homosexual leanings toward wrestlers. With that said, Incredible actors here,amazing job with the makeup(i had no idea that was Steve Carell or Mark Ruffalo) and a movie that I cant wait to watch in its entirety!!

This shows you how powerful the du Pont name was as John became mOre dangerous in his troubled mental state. Nothing was medically or lawfully done before he killed David Schulz. After his protection of his Mother was gone by her death he needed to have solid care around him and he began to decline.

they keep saying that the sport of wrestling is shunned in america compared to other sports, but they literally have wrestling in high school over there. im in canada they don't have kids wrestle in high school over here (i would've loved it, maybe getting all that aggression out of my system would've steered me away from being a juvenile delinquent..).. we got hockey programs! swimming, baseball, basketball, even gaming..
Nicely directed, and the acting was excellent as far as it went, which was not far. However apart from gaining some insight into the dysfunctional insanity inherent in these kinds of families, and the tragic death of a loving husband and father, this story lacked sufficient content, and characters, of interest to sustain the entire movie. Loonies are always interesting, therefore perhaps it should have concentrated more on Dupont's family life starting from his childhood. Also contrasting this with Davids simple but far happier family life and real love for his brother. A sort of money can buy you a lot of things, including the attention of a lot of wrestlers, but it can't buy you love, happiness, or sanity theme. Of course this was there, but could have been more emphasised.
You can see it in some scenes mainly with Carrell. The first time where mark took John to meet Dave in his hotel room you can just tell from that scene the different worlds/personalities collide.
