Opening line is "He said I will love you until I die".... and yet so many people completely miss that line and don't realize that the song is about a guy who kept his promise. He loved her until he died, despite being lonely, heart-broken, and literally miserable for the rest of his life. He simply couldn't give his heart to someone else.

George truly loved Tammy until the end. When they divorced and had an estate sale I went. The wrought iron gates to the entrance of my farm were the ones they had at their estate. Needless to say, I hear a GG song every time that I enter. Lol. After the divorce, George lived in a single-wide trailer across the street from my commercial building. Our friend, Peanut, owned a bar there on Nashville’s west side and the trailer was in the parking lot. I would pull into work and wave to George every morning at 7:45 as I arrived. He would be outside drinking coffee and reading the paper.

The first line says "He said I'll love you till I die" and that's exactly what he did. I'm so glad you understood that. I am amazed at the people who react to this song and think he stopped loving her because he finally gave up on her and moved on. That sort of interpretation sort of makes the song just another song. When it is interpreted correctly it becomes one of the greatest country music songs ever recorded.

This is often referred to as the greatest country song ever. A bold statement but when it comes to true country music, it’s hard to deny. Two other greats of his are “Choices” and “Who’s gonna fill their shoes” a song he put out when country music started going pop.

That was AWESOME. You were all smiles when you heard that "he didn't see no tears, all dressed up to go away, first time I've seen him smile in years", and even when "they placed a wreath upon his door", it hadn't yet registered, but once "soon they'll carry him away", your face told that you SUDDENLY realized that yeah, he's dead.

Great job listening and analyzing this song. It's surprising how many reactors don't get it that he passed although there are several clues, but the intro "he said I'll love you 'til I die" sets it up for later where "he stopped loving her today" closes his life. Add the wreath upon his door; they'll carry him away. Thanks!!

George was around a LONG time and had many hits. They range from the sad HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY to the lighthearted THE CORVETTE SONG to the nostalgic WHO’s GONNA FILL THEIR SHOES to one of his earliest hits WHITE LIGHTENING , a song about moonshine.

When GJ sang this song and most people hadn't heard it yet, he would spring the surprise on the audience by holding the "carry him away" (included only once) to near the end of the song, followed by a wailed-sung "he stopped loving her today." on an emphatic descending melody. It was very effective in providing shock.

Mr. George Jones was a real case. Often failing to appear at his own concerts in his later years, he was sometimes called "No-Show" Jones. His main moniker was "The Possum". What's certain about him is that he possessed perhaps the most beautiful male singing voice in the entire history of country music. He was a living, breathing, hard-drinking legend in his own time, and anyone who ever heard him sing became a lifetime fan & admirer. About the song, you got the idea right away, and that's not something everyone can so easily do. I liked & subscribed, entirely because you spoke of Mr. Jones and his song with great respect & humility & intellect, and now I'm a fan of yours. Thanks. I was going to recommend another of his songs, and so I'll suggest you give a shot at "The Grand Tour".

    Fun fact
He stopped Loving her today by George Jones
I'm So lonesome I could cry by Hank Williams
It has been argued for years which one is the greatest country song ever.
In the '90s, they interviewed and asked almost every act of country music singer, what is the greatest country song ever. 95% of them listed one of those two songs

George Jones's friend and country superstar Alan Jackson sang this at George's funeral celebration at the Grand Old Opry. Garth Brooks was the first to stand and put his hat over his heart. It was one of those moments. George had a lifelong battle with alcohol that seriously damaged his career. His nickname was The Possum. You'll hear that in the duet of Alan Jackson and George Strait when they sing 'Murder on Music Row' - a brilliant song about how the country music industry was changed by commercialism.

I've noticed through your reactions, Mr Boyd, just how much you truly love the classic country. Like genuinely. And I get it. I'm a hip hop head through and through. But there is something about the sound, the emotion conveyed through the voices, the simple instrumentals, and the stories told - that CAPTIVATE. Great reaction. Can't wait to see more.

Glad you caught that, not everyone does. Great reaction. Heard that Johnny Cash was asked who is the best country music singer and he replies, "You mean besides George Jones?" His song Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes pays tribute to many country legends

What I love about this song is that the very first line is a setup for the entire song. And for the chorus. Personal opinion this is an absolute Masterpiece of lyrical manipulation.

My favorite George Jones song. I was lucky enough to see him once....with John Anderson ( during his "Swingin' Days) and George Strait. It was a great concert and we did have to wait a few min for him to come out on stage like was his habit at the time. But it was worth it.

You’re amazing! I’ve watched other reactors react to this song and nobody gets it. You’re the first one I’ve watched that immediately got the premise of this song. Just like you did when you heard Elvis, If I Can Dream.
