Today, we examine the bloody refreshments of Half-Life's picky alien drinkers, none of which is normally visible within the final game.

To elaborate on the "unused" part: Houndeye blood drinking is fully functional in the final game, but no info_nodes are properly set as human or alien blood that can be eaten, hence Houndeyes can never be seen drinking. While there's no blood to drink anyway due to the previous point, Bullsquids cannot properly drink human blood regardless due to some behavior conflict in their AI. Pit Drones inherited the Bullsquid's broken blood drinking code.
Bonus Fun Fact Files Fun Fact: The clip of the Houndeyes in the Questionable Ethics pen took many takes to finally capture as several Houndeyes in the group very rudely kept taking naps in the middle of recordings.
I would rather have aliens sometimes drink water from puddles instead of blood. Makes more sense, and it makes them more like regular animals.
Presumably you have to modify the game to get this footage. Are there playable mods that re-add the various removed content you've covered?
they are the cutest monsters i have ever killed
Please, let them rest.
@@All4Tanuki For the houndeyes it just needs an info_node with the right properties, but other enemies that have this in their code have scheduling conflicts which prevent it from ever performing the action. It's probably a simple fix though.
I love how we are still finding out certain little facts about games from over two decade ago. Amazing.
that is because this game, unlike the rushed and uninspired mess of nowadays, was very well thought and a work of heart
You goddamn right!
@@Zontar82 Pretending the the many good games of modern times don’t exist is rather ignorant.
Especially with Re4. I didnt know Leon could investigate the windmill on the farm until yesterday, and ive played that game well over a hundred playthroughs

It's incredible how this game was so ahead of its time
Back when valve cared about minor details...
Well, now it still kinda is, with Half-Life: Alyx
So true, every enemy had so mcuh thought put in, and now it is just targets you shoot especialyl in Wargames like Battlefield and Call Of Duty today, no care who you shoot aslong its not your allies, while those evolve so well here in Half Life, other games not care anymore, just quick money, not telling a story or showing things anymore.
@@WaryObserver To be fair Valve is a weird company. They basically give themselves a blank check to make every game with and if any other company was as meticulous as them they would probably go under after just a game or two, if they were lucky to finish a game in the first place.
Well, it wasn’t used.
Yeah it’s nice but why the antlions on Australia we got fucking Roos that break knee caps

Drop everything, I need to see a Houndeye drinking blood!
Gotta have priorities.

The tittle says unused it means that it's not on the actual game
I find it really comforting to know all these details were intended in this game. The designers really took it a step further to break out of the good/evil kind of theme with video game enemies. In Black Mesa, especially during the later stages of the crisis, it turned into a defacto Xen ecosystem. The enemies in the game were just trying to find their niche and survive, there is never really any malice on the part of any force, just an attempt to survive an incredibly brutal circumstance. I just think its really cool theres this imaginative take on alien life and how these beings would survive and make this new environment a part of their habitat and return to nature. It was something really cool with the post-apocalyptic setting in 2, you got to see nature retake society, and how this new Xen life became integrated into nature: Barnacles eating birds etc.
These aliens are not demons, they are their own kind of animal. Thats why I think its comforting, they seem alien and bizarre, but they behave in an understandable way even if they are hostile and you can even respect why the Xen life is hostile towards you. This kind of understanding comes full circle in 2 when the vortigaunts become your ally and teach you to domesticate the Ant-Lion. And it even gets more full circle than that when Gman references the vortigaunts first experience with you being a "crowbar down a steel corridor".
Yes, Half Life and Avatar The Last Airbender series - both so subtle with a lot of details, both so successful in their fields, everyone wanted a sequel with the male main character and got one with a female character. Both series' main writer quit after some time.
Great writing all around, i enjoyed reading it. Thank you!
alien grunts , vortiagunts, alien controllers, gargantua and nihilanth:

Maybe he is doing both in the video. He got so happy he finally could have some human blood he was dancing as he was drinking it

True
I would never even imagine that programing like this went into a game from 1998.
@Jotaro97 I mean, are you able to imagine it? I sure can't, the work they did back then was really impressive for its time.
I've started to notice that many 1990s' best devs put way more effort into their game-design and coding than most of the modern counterparts.
System Shock 2 for example has a crude but working full-body tracking and simulation for the MC, just in case the VR would've become a big thing in the Y2K.
@@ttkftykyfts Technological limitations are not what's preventing this. It's the market and investors.
@@DasAntiNaziBroetchen Uh. That's not the point of my comment, which I posted well over a year ago by the way.
Yeah, I am well aware that it'd be more a financial issue.
Oldskool game developers are actual full fledged software engineers who know and understand the guts of their hardware intimately. Modern game 'developers' are not engineers, they use game engines that the actual engineers made that abstract away all of the complexity. In other words, the barrier to entry to making games today is very low, and so we get a lot of very low quality games.
"Wouldn't you want to get one of _these_ bloodsamples under a microscope?"

Ehhhh.... No. No.

I am sure Half Life 1 has more unused features then Cyberpunk 2070.
seriously the amount of thoughts and ideas put for everything in this game is immense and an entire thing of its own.
love your videos on showing all of these things man!
And the amazing thing is that 95% of the content was made in just a little over a year by a relatively small team on a tight budget.
The difference is that games of that era were a labour of love, made to be as groundbreaking as possible, not to appease the masses, but for the sake of the art itself.
@@elimalinsky7069 Mainstream games are also way more expensive to make now than back then. Implementing features like that in half-life could possibly come down to one guy messing with code in his free time, nowadays it would probably take at least few days of development time. Besides, when half-life came out FPS games, let alone the fully 3D ones, were still relatively new so experimentation was simply necessary.
@@adenowirus Agreed.
@Jotaro97 Doom and Wolfenstein were essentially indie games, and Half-Life was indeed tight on budget because it was one year over schedule and the team wasn't that large compared to the scope and ambition of the game. I think Need For Speed III, which came out around the same time, had a larger team.
0:59 You're wrong, its not his Painis, its the mouth
I love these videos. Half-Life will forever be my favorite era of gaming. So many good times with friends checking out all the mods and custom content.

I always get excited when you post these because it makes me appreciate the game more and more each time. It’s crazy how much detail was in this game that you are still finding things 20 years later.
Man, the amount of detail in this game is astonishing.
there's an easter egg that no one saw before in counter strike 1.1. When I was a kid, I didn't know what the console did. I just messed with the keyboard and I got into a map. The first thing I saw was a hostage standing menacingly on a platform. The map's theme looks like the building map or whatever. I was scared of hostages because they look scary to me, I cried out loudly. My dad came and turned of the PC, he cheered me up. After that, the map no one ever talked about haunts me forever.
You have more details of this history? This could be an old easter egg that no one imagined about it, or it's just a random decision of the A.I that scared you.

the map design looks like de_vertigo
and there's a hostage with the orange uniform thingy

Really amazing that there are still things being discovered about this two decades old game
I chose the right night to stay up until 3am, thank you for uploading the content thirty minutes ago I needed tonight.
I need more of this, Half-Life is brilliant.
This gave me some real Mendela Effect. There are a bunch of situations in the game where a bullsquid is placed near gore to imply that you just interrupted feeding, such as the freezer in office complex or the room where you first get satchel charges in on a rail. Also, if a bullsquid kills a human, it will feed on the corpse. Because of these things, I fully believed I had seen the behavior shown in this video in action. I had to load the game and go to these places with notarget to believe it was unused.
Houndeye drinking really doesn't look like drinking...
22 years and we barely scratched the surface. We still find more and more. This is more than a game. This is a goldmine.
The proverbial Half Life egg continues to crack, revealing its mysterious juices to a cruel and uncaring world.
Tantos años y sigue dando que hablar esta saga, este juego es de los mejores !!!!!
If only we could have such detail and quality in our games today
race x's drinking sound is literally the pseudo dog's sound from STALKER, great now i'm having flashbacks
Actually, Bullsquids' blood drinking animation is _not_ unused. There's a part at the freezer, where if you smash the raw meat chunks, the Bullsquid will go and slurp up the bloodstain and gibs.
Houndeye: "Gordon, I'm Thirsty"
Would you like to get one of these blood samples under a microscope?

Game released in 1998 has more secrets and cut content than most of the ''popular'' today games wow :o ...
in most popular games, the devs are rushed to hell and back and usually are on a set, TIGHT, schedule. i doubt they had much of those problems when this game was just starting
Yeah
Cut content isn't something to brag about when making a game, even if it makes for interesting TCRF articles and YT videos.
Edit: Unless you're trying to push modding and the thing can be reimplemented/repurposed.
Next thing you know there's a cut formula for solving all the world's problems in this two decade old game.
The solution to all the worlds problems is clearly scientists with crowbars! XD

I wonder, when aliens are eating gibs, are they getting heal or is it just a cosmetic animation?
Probably just cosmetic animation.
Only cosmetic. When Vortigaunts are wounded and they run for the healing shower, they actually don't get back any health.

Half Life's detail over these little things are just amazing and scary at the same time.
Seems rather strange that they don't do this when decals are placed on walls from enemies wounded or gibbing.

22 years since release of this game, yet he still finds material to make videos about it
So much f*** detail that usually players takes for granted..
I like to think why most prefore human blood is human blood has more water and maybe has some kind of mineral or vitamin, that is less abundant in there home dimension. It's also possible that both provide similar nutrients ,but human blood is more tasty and alian blood would be time wasted on something gross that has no benefits,Which could be why the bullsquid eats alien meat but not blood.
