  • All about the American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), also known as the buttonwood tree. Bill Grundmann from OPC shows you -
    - what the tree looks like, including its bark, leaves, and fruit, as well as how tall and wide it gets (this is a BIG tree!)
    - what kinds of growing conditions it prefers
    - why sycamores may lose their leaves, or have very few leaves, in spring (hint - it's called sycamore anthracnose)
    - other problems you may have with your sycamore tree
    - why you should keep horses away from sycamore trees
    - what pollarding a sycamore or plane tree looks like (it's a common pruning practice for these types of trees, especially in Europe)
The sycamore is a great shade tree to plant in central New Jersey or eastern Pennsylvania.

We love the 2 "ancient" ones in our backyard. Must be over 100' tall.
I also think that they are magnificent! 👐🌳

I have a 60+ year old sycamore in my yard in NW Ohio. It appears healthy but developed no seed balls this year, do you have an explanation or idea as to why this may have happened?

We have a sycamore tree that is losing it’s bark. Can anything be done to help the tree not lose any more bark?

I'm close to New Hope Bucks County I'm in Warminster and I can't believe that sycamore trees can photosynthesize through their tree bark I have a sycamore where I live and it is huge and I've noticed the same thing in May that it looks like it's dying off but I also read that they can re-leaf later in spring and summer due to an early spring chill
