Installing insulation on Tune M1 popup camper

  • This is some removable insulation I made for my Tune M1 camper. It uses 5mm closed cell double foil sided duct insulation from US Energy, which they advertise as R8, dubious as that sounds. However, the double foil installed with an airgap (velcro in place) results in great heat rejection during hot AZ summers.
The end pieces allow camper to fold down easily and I will leave permanently installed. The side pieces I demonstrate installing here for my first time. I will remove them to close camper to ease the material folding and closing. Then I have some narrow pieces to go over the aluminum rails where a lot of heat bridging and condensation happen without an insulation layer. After doing it a few times now, I guess it will take 6 to 9 minutes total to set up full insulation when needed.

This is first time putting it in, will get quicker. Will trim the edges a bit more, maybe add some tape on edges, and may run more velco to make install easier. I also will cut slots where hangers and hooks are attached to the rails, so insulation just fits over them, but am not sure where I want permanent hangers yet.

Tons of ways to insulate. After researching insulation types and various van and RV installs, I decided this material was the best for ease, cost, R value, summer heat, and water proofness. This is about $80 of insulation and $14 of velcro, took a few hours. Tune is now selling an insulation pack to go on tent areas, made of 600g thinsulate.
Love to hest folks ideas and comments!

@crv20051 Not yet. You can order it "pre sale" now, Supposedly for pickup in a few months. But no one has seen it yet, they didn't have one to show in Jan, and folks picking up in late February 24 couldn't get it still.
