I was going to visit Humboldt forest at this moment.... but then I got diagnosed with stupid cancer. No worries, as I'm almost finished with treatments and will be visiting either this Fall or next Spring. Damn, it's got a gorgeous coast. I'm on the Atlantic, can't wait to see the Pacific. And LOVE the camper! Have fun!
I've been reviewing a lot of your older videos when you did the renovations in the Slumber Queen, you did an exceptional job, and I was very impressed! You should be very proud. I'm happy for your new camper, but I have to admit I miss the Slumber Queen because you did such an excellent job and it was a cozy little space. Always enjoyed watching you cook, so hopefully you can bring the same element to this new camping experience. But one day, I hope you're able to get something as nice or nicer than what you had. However, the new hatch openings are cool👍
Nice camper! By the way, regarding MPG. I have a 2016 Tundra 4WD with a camper about the same size as yours (cabover). I know this is obvious, but there's a huge difference in MPG driving 60 vs. 70 MPH. The key is to keep the RPMs low. My rig gets 16-17 MPG on the freeway going 60.
@@ghklfghjfghjcvbnc It depends on the transmission, so each vehicle will be different. But I did a MPG test when I drove 500 miles up the freeway in my 2016 Tundra to get my camper installed, then 500 miles back with the camper. I got 18 MPG going up at 60 then about 16.5 coming back at 60. I have the V8 and I didn't use cruise control because I heard it will actually ruin you MPGs in a Tundra. Also, I have stock wheels with tires one size larger (33"). Many people with Tundras get new wheels with heavy 35" tires then complain about 11 MPG. I don't have that problem. When I go to Baja, I only drive 50 on the highway and get even better MPG.
@@ghklfghjfghjcvbnc I think he said his truck went from 15.8 MPG to 11.65 after the camper was installed. I don't know which of the two available engines he has (3.4 V6 or 4.7 V8). My Tundra has the 5.7 V8 that came out later. He didn't talk about his driving habits. Maybe he drives 70+ and his fuel efficiency is generally good unless he has the extra drag caused by a camper? Maybe he was driving into a strong headwind before filling up with the camper? A strong headwind makes your engine run harder and therefore less fuel efficient. Too many unknowns. And each individual engine is different - even with the same model year. With my personal test, I made a point to drive the same speed (60 MPH) and I didn't have any strong winds going up or coming back (either head wind or tail wind). And I didn't use cruise control either way. So I feel my test was very accurate.
Just FYI to add to the conversation. I run Ram diesels, I'm on my 5th one , new in 2016. I've always got around 20mpg with them . Even had a 2007 4 x 4 3500 crew cab get 20 mpg. My latest the 2016 is a 2500 4 x 4 crew cab. It got 15 mpg because of the DEF system . Had to delete the DEF because it had a break down and new parts were not available , I'm back to 20 mpg ! So if you guys drive those small trucks for the mpg , just to let you know , you can have a full size truck and still get good fuel mileage. I even had a 2008 Silverado with a 5.3 gas burner that got 16 mpg and it was a crew cab 2 wheel drive. I run cab high bed toppers on my truck but am looking for a full size truck camper that I can afford , the new ones are crazy priced !
I've got one of the first baby LS. Full size supercab 8 ft bed, raise top fiberglass cap. 20 mi to the gallon.. on cruise running 80 or 90. 5-speed stick with taller tires... She don't have much power in 5th gear until you get her above 70... With any weight or a trailer I'll just leave her in 4 th. And do 65- 70.
I like what you have going in the camper shell now. Staying minimal could be less headaches in the future. One thing I personally would change is have a custom passage put in the window that gets you in the drivers seat PDQ. and also you can get in the back from drivers seat quickly if desired. ☕️👍🏻🇺🇸🤔
You could make the front of the camper more aerodynamic like the big tractor trailers have wedged shaped. Cut down on wind drag better fuel mileage. Just a thought. Nice camper
Hi! Nice camper! I’m wondering if you installing a wind deflector on the cab, in front of the topper, would help with the gas mileage. As it is now, some of the wind is being deflected down between the cab and topper, causing drag.
Well unfortunately, it’s not the wind, it’s the weight. If he puts a wind deflector on, he’ll most likely have a smother drive, but his mpg will stay the same.
@@NoonMight on the highway, aerodynamics are like half of what affects gas mileage. the little space between his cab and the camper being shaped the way it is definitely is affecting mpg
Yes yes be proud of yourself you have done a superb job renovating your Campers! I use to love driving as you do but, I cannot do so anymore because of my eyesight. So I travel vicariously through your adventures. Thank you! 🌺
I really like the camper. Looked at the Bel air's now I know why they're ridiculously priced. Love the awning side, and rear door really opens things up. IMHO, I would find a way to add straps to the corner of either awning and securing them to the bumper, or underside of the truck to keep it from folding over should a weird gust of wind suddenly hit it. Happy camping, be safe. 👍
The pass thru is something I have always felt is a major safety idea. It's a crazy world and you never know what can happen, so it's a smart idea to have a safety window to go thru to get into the driver seat if you would need to take off quickly, or if you just want to avoid going outside in the bad weather and would just like to start up the engine to get it warmed up.
Very enjoyable fishing and camping video, Jonathan! The new camper shell looks great, and I especially like the way the whole rear panel lifts. That’s very cool.
Great video as always! I don’t think people realize all the extra work you put into the cinematography in your videos, all the extra shots you take of you walking away or driving away or pulling into a parking lot only having to go back and get your camera after you drive off. Very very nice effects and it makes your videos a pleasure to watch. Also, watch Mav. He did a build in his camper shell that is awesome and you could probably take a few ideas when you finally go to build yours out.
That MPG is a real hit. Reduces my radius of travel for regular trips. That's why a got rid of my 4x4, and kept the 2012 Dodge RAM 1500 2WD. 21MPG across Montana at 85-90 MPH. I have a bit of a lift for more ground clearance, but I haven't had a problem with getting stuck. I just have to choose my battles sometimes.
That is an awesome camper! Having the kitchen by that large opening will be great for food smells, like fish, as well. I hope you do a pullout picnic table out the back. Absolutely love it
That camper is awesome! Seems like a perfect middle ground between the last one and the slumber queen. Actually might be what I want for my future camping rig! Looks so cozy and I love the barn door!
You could turn that space at the front of the camper into a cabover bed very easily with some L tracks and some plywood, the extension could fold out or slide out, you could just put it on some hinges and fold out a little 2 or 3 foot section, it wouldn’t take any of your storage space and it would allow you to use that space for what it should be used for. You could get a trifold memory foam mattress and just leave it up there. It would be so easy and it’s cheap, get to it!
They used to sell an inflatable tube for big campers back in the days for that purpose like in the 70’s. Back then your unit was called a sleeper. I have a 2015 Tundra 4x4 crewmax and get 17 mpg. However when I’m towing my camper @ 4700 lbs I get about 10/11 mpg. Big engine with big power comes with big gas bill. Lol 😂
I think it's an awesome camper shell dang dude nice score!
Camper goes well with the truck I like it is that a 6 foot better 5 foot be blessed
I watched a video of yours a few years ago and recently ran into your videos again good too see you are having a good time. Its funny you mentioned your mom and beef a roni and her sprucing it up😄 i did the same thing with my son when he was little i would sprinkle cheese in it or cut up hot dogs in it and did the same thing with mac n cheese😄👍

Hi Jonathon,
It is very beautiful there. Hope you are doing well. Have fun be safe. Much love.
I miss humboldt county, it really sucks that I had to come back to the bay area for the job opportunities after graduating. I really wish I could move back up there, but unfortunately I'm not at the point where I can do full time WFH. Considering how much the gas scalpers are charging these days, it might be a good idea to look into boondocking for long periods of time so you drive less.
Awww what a great coupla pups
I have a 2008 Silverado HD 3500 with a 6.0, I would love to get 11 mpg.
