Slight correction. It can pick up a false signal, both lock and ping, from a radar that you're not even in front of. There's just a lot of impossible false rwr signals in WT.

With that many keys to press and only five fingers of your own on the keyboard it might actually be worthwhile having a friend be the radar operator while focusing dexterity on controling the airframe. Working together like that would be great to hone the teamwork skills aboard your friendship.
It would be great if War Thunder allowed co-op gameplay. Some of these jets (i.e. F-14) have two seats for a reason. Imagine a B-17 with a whole squad of your friends for each role (i.e. pilot, bomber, gunner(s)).
I've been playing War Thunder air modes on and off since 2016, and if you want to explore War Thunder aircraft, I suggest the following: -USSR and USA generally have the best aircraft for each battle rating, but their tech trees are a pain to grind -The battle ratings have these themes: a) prop fighters b) WW2 jets c) Korean War jets with infrared missiles d) Vietnam jets with added longer-range semi-active radar missiles e) Top-tier jets (F14, F16, MiG29, Yak141) with BVR missiles -Buying a Vietnam-era premium jet to get into missile gameplay is very expensive. But if you're planning that route, I recommend that you do some prop fighter Air Arcade, then prop fighter Air Realistic first; until you can survive and get kills in prop Air Realistic. (Most jet matches are in Realistic).
The BVR tag specifically means that the radar is able to use either the target cue or 'Select Radar/IRST target to lock' to selectively lock a target. If a radar does not have the BVR tag but does have a track function, that function works by pointing the radar directly forward (similar to 'ACM mode' aka ACM Boresight)
@@TimsVariety Would have liked a little more depth on iff. I know it doesn’t really matter to RB folks but us Sim players live and die by IFF. Just having the tag doesn’t mean much on multi-mode radars as some modes have it and some don’t. Great radar Tech Video. VERY complicated to understand and remember all the info in this. I think this RADAR Tech/Setup guide is more suited to people who play the game in simulator mode with a very expensive HOTAS aircraft sim setup. Trying to bind the keys and remember their function on a standard keyboard is VERY confusing and near impossible to pull off using just a mouse/keyboard setup. I am not in the market for a high end aircraft simulator rig to play a game. With all the real military tech out there Gaijin has done a magnificent job in applying it to a PC game. I wish a MFG would bring out better keyboards dedicated to games with so many key bindings.
My secret is overlapping keybinds. For example, I know that no plane with ww-2 "Schräge Musik" cannons will ever have an advanced radar, so my keybind for lock radar target is the same as my keybind for switching to "Schräge Musik" guns. Some buttons on my keyboard have 3 or 4 things bound to them. I also use an elgato streamdeck as a makeshift real-life MFD, which helps sometimes in high intensity situations.

Of note that I believe wasn't mentioned. If you used manual target cueing you cannot select targets in the full vertical range of the IRST system even if they're being detected.
IFF never seem to prevent lock on fiendly .. it only tells the difference on radar (friendly with line, foe without line) Maybe its one of the thousands of bugs... Who knows...

i look forward to unlocking this stuff in another 4 years!
These 3 guides make me understand why WSO and RIO positions exist.
Of note that I believe wasn't mentioned. If you used manual target cueing you cannot select targets in the full vertical range of the IRST system even if they're being detected.
I hope someday that maybe we can get a keybind or option to use the manual targeting cue and the cyclic switching at the same time
most informative video which helped a lot
A lot of work. Many thanks
IFF never seem to prevent lock on fiendly .. it only tells the difference on radar (friendly with line, foe without line)
Maybe its one of the thousands of bugs... Who knows...
Always good $h!T from TimsVariety 👍
Great video, thank you! I only fly sim, and mostly only have early radars, but... I did manage to get that Su-25BM :) I'm sure many others have it now too, and like me, it might be their first introduction to advanced radar. It would be great if you could do a video covering just that jet's radar, and specially great if you could cover the cockpit aspects for us sim players.
