Tim just out here like Sisyphus with his boulder with Gaijin updating RWR and Radar mechanics every few months. One must imagine Tim happy (Which is why he gets my upvote!)
Hopefully unlike with radars, this will be relevant and accurate for a long while after it's posted. Though if Tim's luck with his radar guides is anything to say we're about to get another RWR overhaul lol
The official channel just made a video about RWRs themselves, don't think they'd outdate themselves so quickly. Then again, this is gaijin we're talking about...
0:50 Although I chose a different specialization at university, I would still be interested in learning more about radar technology. Whe had a Prefessor from raytheon anschütz in basic course and I always found the topic very interesting.
I just love how user-friendly and easy to understand your guide are and how it feels like I'm listening to someone explain what they genuinely enjoy, plus it feels like I'm talking to someone who is a real person. Great job!
US jets : the MiG-29 fired a R27ER on your 4 o'clock at about 22km Soviet jet : there is a missle i think Pilot: where Soviet jet: dunno. just wanted you to know that you need to bail out in about 10 sec
It's unfortunate, since SPO-15 does show signal strength of a primary threat. You can see the indicator on the image at 6:45, the dash almost-circle outside the big red "OKAY, PANIC" circle is the signal strength indicator. Indeed, in DCS, they are some situations I prefer it over the AN/ALR-67 on the Hornet.
Great guide as usual. Your examples are really good, especially the one showing the differences in practice between sensor-based and direction-based sensors.
A friend of mine just got his first jet with RWR, I was looking for a good video and yours happened to pop up! After watching this through it, turns out both of us learned something new about RWRs!
Great video Tim; I've been flying simulator battles in my F-5E and was wondering why my RWR was picking up signals from MiG-23s despite being to their sides and behind them. I guess those side lobes and back lobe on the Sapphire radar must be huge! Makes it easy to track them down without using my own radar
This is perfect, I remember suggesting Tim make this video back when he made his Radar video and I'm overjoyed to see he made a videon on the subject of RWR's! Thanks Tim for putting the extra effort into these, they are extremely powerful tools now!
3:21 Love the discussion of the stat cards... really useful and as a side effect a good reference for having all units on one picture to compare directly
Their introduction of IFF mostly working is very nice. Cleans up the mess a lot. However I have had one instance I can think of where I got hit by an R-27R1 from a German MiG-29 in my Soviet MiG-29 and I was quite confused cuz I did not recall my RWR going off at all. It came at me roughly from the side (I was almost notching)
Best War thunder RWR Explanation ever! Thinking that war thunder RWR model is almost complete, this would be the final version and thanks for that, this is the best video for it.
Ive just unlocked £ my first top tier CAS JAS39A 👌🏻 being a ground focused player over the years, this is the kind of easy to digest information I need… says the ex JTAC ;)… As always keep up the good work !!
Tim your videos, tutorials and reviews, are absolute essentials for understanding warthunder and I am grateful for them, thanks for your impecable job :D (Gaijin should've added you to the partners program by principle)
FYI: you’re not going to find a lot of information on IFF and how it’s integrated with the RWR because IFF uses 2 different systems that aren’t always inherently linked with the RWR or TWS. It uses your radar and interrogator. In real life there is legitimately only a small amount of aircraft that has proper architecture integration that implements this. Nothing will be written about it however and *spoiler* it doesn’t actually filter out contacts as you see in game. If you have any other questions regarding these systems you can ask me. I used to work avionics and EW for F-35s
Thanks for the guide on this Tim. The core principal behind the RWR is easy to understand from the game, but the details about individual components aren't explained well at all by the game system.
I've got a surprising number of subscribers (based on comments like this) that watch my WT stuff out of general interest, but don't actually play the game.
my fav part about the RWR is the fact that whenever I play with my friend he locks me for the entire match :/ all I ever hears is BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
I really wish someone would post MAW going off because I actually really like it some some odd reason Note, M247 tracking radar is actually from a F-16, you will see F-16 a m247 is tracking you.
This video getting only a third of the views of the radar guide is somewhat understandable, but also not completely. Understanding certain mechanics and their interaction is so important in WT and your guides are always really beginner friendly. Thank you again Tim for all the effort and work that noticably go into every one of your videos 🙂 Next video up is the Complete Guide To Air To Air Missiles (2024) ruclips.net/video/_tQ6JzPWEFU/видео.html I can only imagine how much work it takes to make one of these guides, so it almost feels wrong to only think about it: But I really would like similar guides for Air To Ground Munition and other mechanics. Best wishes from Germany
Good Day tim & thanks for this perfect video, Getting to learn a few extra things I didn't know of. Ohh boy I can't wait for the next three weeks of reddit posts going OMG for the SAM's you listed from this video (there has already been similar posts since the official channel just posted an RWR video as well). A surprise you didn't show off the S125 in a custom battle as the V-600P missile found on the Project 56K Bravyi is such a missile. On a sidenote what are your thoughts on the poxy rwr pings from IAI Kfirs? As if you get them as teammates your rwr is screaming all match from their gunradars locking you even if 30km away behind them & ohh french rwrs truly suffer against them as it's a constant ping over beeping.
Its funny - I actually asked them just a few days ago if there were any major RWR revamps coming anytime soon, and all I got was "Sorry, we can't share that info." ..... I expect to be remaking this guide in a couple of months.
There's been everything going odd in Sim now, AN/ALR-45 doesn't detect nearly anything. The A-6E TRAM got launch detection on the specs but when you in simulator, doesn't catch anything from tunguska, not ping nor lock or launch. Guess there's maybe some realism but based on singal reciever it should totally identify the bands.
Great question, I could have gone into more detail on (noted for the next time I have to update this). On a RWR with a range of 50km, that will the scale of the circular scope. So a target halfway between the center and outside edge will be apx 25km away.
I heard on another channel that the Question mark mostly signifies that Gaijin didn't complete the configuration file, and should show the source type instead...
Quite likely, they just revamped the RWR system a couple of months ago and its very likely a few bits and pieces are incomplete or not working right under the hood.
btw the gripen keep showing as a ? on late rwr and idk why :/ same for the mirage 4000 when its litterally the radar of the m2KC. And i forgot the su27 appearing as a mig 29 when its absolutely not the radar of the mig 29
Not a stupid question. Short answer - yes - but **currently** the IFF feature (on units that have it) is supposed to filter it out. They may or may not change that 5 minutes after I post this comment.
Thank you very much for your answer. You're doing a great job. One of the best war thunder channels. Only specific information. Keep it up. Greetings from Poland.
What does it mean if the stat card says SPI? I noticed that the hunter F58 that i'm not far off researching (it'll be my first radar/RWR equipped plane in war thunder) has it listed where the rest of the RWR information is listed.
@@rainbowappleslice It designates a target point for guided weapons and targeting cameras (like laser pods etc). Its the thing that makes the little red square target on the ground.
The spill-over effects, while im sure well-meaning, are still unfinished to say the least. Planes locking and launching from 3 or 9 o'clock abeam aircraft at 10+km routinely make RWR systems go wild.
when my RWR just shows a questionmark does it mean it cant identify the band or does it mean its a more modern radar that was developed after the rwr used in that airplane?

True, they need to fix the spo15 within the next update or soviet mains are going to struggle with the amraam.
It's unfortunate, since SPO-15 does show signal strength of a primary threat. Freshly brewed coffee, bagel, and a guide from Tim... my Sunday is set, hell yea.

RWR on f-4s shows many targets as MID, what is that?
when my RWR just shows a questionmark does it mean it cant identify the band or does it mean its a more modern radar that was developed after the rwr used in that airplane?
