At ~2:01, he moves down and accidentally moves the pieces. The second he felt the pieces move, he freezes, then recruits all his legs to begin digging his way through. Three thoughts: 1, I think moving the pieces was either tiring or taking to long, and that's why he didn't get through in one go; 2, he seemed to solve the problem almost exclusively with touch (don't know how good octopus non-barrel-related eyesight is); and 3, there better be some food in that barrel after all his hard work! ;) (I know he loves the barrel too, but still, he's such a smart good boy!)
Loved how you could see he closed his eyes as he braced for the final push and also used a tentacle to push himself through. Also how he knew the blocks could go both directions to get out of his way. He didn’t need to bring them all on his side of the wall, only enough to give him clearance and the others he actively pushed towards the barrel to make room on the other side.
Viewer: Give it something complicated with stuff in the way Trainer: okay let's give that a try. Octopus: I gonna take my time on this to make it look difficult otherwise they're going to keep making things harder and harder for me 🤦🤦🤦
Dear Octolab, I really love Arnold and want him to be as happy as possible. I want him to live the most fulfilling life an octopus in captivity can live. PLEASE decorate one of his Aquariums to be a nice home. A little reef with different plants and fish. I would love to see a video about that. Make Arnold happy!
I had one as a pet. Never again. They are way to smart. If they see you do something they will forever remember it. Like opening the tank, changing filters, pushing air lines in and out, dissembling anything in the tank he found interest in, etc, etc, etc. I really liked him but was worried he'd get out at some point and I'd would not be able to get him back in the tank before It was to late. He was very social, liked to be petted, and would tap on the glass if he got lonely and wanted interaction with someone.
I'd like to see octopus tool use to get food. So say food at the end of a tube the tentacles can't reach, but there is a scooping device in sight and then see if he can fish out the food like a primate fishes out a termite.
Wile its a good thought octopi can go just about any ware. Now if you placed the bait on a string and he can pull it down to him that might be worthwhile.
@@warrmalaski8570 There are tubes that octopuses cannot enter and it would be too long for them to reach. Octopuses are known for being tool users, so can they do it with food?
I had no idea we could make requests for experiments ... that’s awesome. Thank you octolab, thank you science, thank you 21st century. Second, I think for namesake alone, you should please create the 8th annual (why not?) Octo-obstacle-octathalon. I’m not sure how keen Arnold is in the pole vaulting segment, but he could certainly find 8 other events to excel in, like moving blocks, tipping barrels or limbo dancing. Thanks octolab!!! Ps - please give Arnold a treat and pets, because he’s a good boy
Who knew he would figure it out and cheered anyway? Something about the behavior of Octopi in these experiments has been firing one neuron in the back of my brain. In an art studio I belonged to, there was a common phrase whenever something "new" appeared, supplies, materials, techniques, etc. It was, "Let me see it with my hands." I see similar behavior in these experiments. Thanks viewer Anita for requesting this experiment.
Arnold has grown quite a bit! I love all your octopus videos, I'm learning so much about octopuses, I've found a fascination with these intelligent beauties thanks to your work.
I really enjoy these clever creatures. I hope that you continue making these videos.🐙 This music was horrible very annoying. He sure loves his barrel 😁
haha I was just thinking: Instead of his barrel, put a PICTURE of his barrel on the other side....see if he spacially that it wasn't actually his barrel.
Muskoka Mike Oh that's cold, bro. I prefer the other challenge that someone selse gave, to have the octopus use a tool to get a treat or reward or something because his tentacle can't reach. I would be so said if the octopus thought your image was real and did a bunch of work for nothing. :(
I'd love to see whether and how fast he can learn a sequence of events to get things done. Could you mount a separator with a door with handle and a key lock (with a key in it)? Or maybe a few handles in different colours and only one working? I'm sure he'll crack it in no time what must be done to open the door. However, I wonder how fast will it take him to learn, which door actually opens, and then to learn that the door will open only after manipulating the key and then the handle. And if he remembers to do that in the correct sequence (first the key, then the handle) after a few attempts. Is it possible?
There was a crow that had to figure out the sequence of events to get their reward. So something along that line might be interesting. ruclips.net/video/JY8-gP3Sw_8/видео.html
I bet if you started out simple it would be easy. Like: Put a wall with an opening Put a door on the wall Put a handle on the door (latch) Put a dead bolt with a thumb latch that has to be turned. So each time he had one more thing to figure out
Man I've been trying to come up with a way for ASSEMBLY to solve a food riddle. And so far I haven't been able to think of something that the tentacles would not be "tool enough" to retrieve the treat. A testament to their wondrous design.
"Breaking News: Octopus and barrel reunited after yet another experiment. 'What do they think I am? A mere squid?', said the octopus. We did not get an interview with the barrel, as Arnold would not let go of it."
That was amazing!! I love all of the different camera angles!! I am watching it once for every different camera angle, so I can watch them all separately! I think its particularly cool when his eyes move and you can tell what he is looking at!!! #Arnieismyfave #TeamArnold
Huh...! You think you can outwit me! The indomitable and eight-armed genuis that I am...! Watch me do this and marvel at my smarts... ❤️❤️ Way to go Arnold! I love you... 😘
Okay i had to subscribe Arnold and his barrel are cute. This was a random link after a ocean documentary just for back round noise. Now after several videos i have a better appreciation for octopuses. Would not of thought they could be such cool dudes.
I would like to see his puzzle solving skills. You should make an obstacle course like this one where he has to solve a puzzle to open the divider. You can train him on opening dividers by making a simplified version first that requires him to pull a lever to open the divider. Maybe even see if you can train him to recognize that he can put a block under a sliding wall to prevent a sliding wall from closing all the way.
Nice experiment Anita Babácsi ! Thanks for requesting it! Thank you OctoLab TV for taking the request and doing the experiment (Great to see that happening!), and kudos to the person(s) who did the setup and camera work!! And of course.. thanks to Arnold for putting up with our human shenanigans. I wonder what experiments octopuses would do with humans.. Would they put us in front of a door with a handle and be amazed as we turned the handle and go through the door? Or would they give us 8 separate things to explore at the same time, and explain our inability to describe each item in perfect detail within 60 seconds by remarking, 'Well, they are a relatively new species, and haven't had as long to evolve as we have, so it's no surprise they aren't as smart as us. Hey... let's cut off one of it's limbs and see how long it takes to grow back...".
Has different colored lights been used for different events? Like say a yellow or whatever led lights up or a pattern of lights when its feeding time another color for playtime etc. Was thinking if they can change texture and color to communicate like say I'm hungry so they match the color and or pattern.
I would love to be “introduced” to the eight-armed partners. Can you do a video showing each one and maybe an identifier or personality tidbit for them?
I'm very curious how Octopussee can use tools to get food, like they tried with crows. They gave them short sticks that they had to put through a small hole in order to reach the food and slowly shove it their way. Maybe try such a challenge with an octopus, it surely has enough arms for it :p
Experiment request: Using the same or a similar divider with a lower opening, drill a hole in the divider with a stick in it, cap the stick on both sides so that he can't just pull it out and replace it with his arms, and this time place the obstacle on the other side of the divider. See if Arnold can figure out how to maneuver the stick to move the obstacle. And thank you for the awesomeness - Arnold and the rest of the Octolab staff.
You can really see just when his arms 'realize' there's enough room to get through. Amazing. What are the blocks and other items made of? I always worry 'won't that scratch / cut them'? But clearly it doesn't.
007tallguy Couldn’t be sugar cubes because the sugar cubes would dissolve rather quickly in the water. Especially with him moving them and placing friction against them with his tentacles.
I suggest a mathematical test to determine whether octopus are able to understand that x (let say 4) items are less than y (let say 5), or different. For instance, train the octopus to understand that the correct hole to get food, is the one marked with 4 marks, not 5, but with changes in the position of the marks during the training period (and possibly different colors to make the game more difficult). Another possibility would be to play with odd versus even numbers. Thank for all these funny videos.

I don’t believe they have bones, but they do have a beak that is the largest part of their anatomy...if they are to squeeze themselves through a small opening, it’s the beak that is the hardest part of them to get through.
David Y Octopuses don't have bones. Their bodies are flexible. In the wild, they tend to hide in coral reef caves, clam shells, or glass bottles (if littered by humans) to avoid prey or maintain some privacy. The barrel is the one Arnold uses for his privacy. Arnold's sassiness about the barrel shenanigans, my brain has characterized his personality as similar to the sass of Harry Potter. I'm here for it.
