Egbert pulls her hand so she can push the log for him. She eventually realized what he wanted her to do. Egbert must've been impressed that humans are intelligent enough to be trained
Exactly man, my first thought
Sit boo-boo, sit. Good dog!
😂
👍🏿👌🏾😄 Well said!!! 🎉
Why do I get the feeling that’s exactly what Egbert was thinking?
He grabbed your hand just like a little kid does when they want to show you something. That was precious!
S B in terms of intelligence levels it is literally the same. Yet it‘s okay to eat them but not to eat a baby 🤔. Morality of our species is a strange illusion.
cellotape r/iamacringyredditorkidlol
Aka stfu
Professional RUclips Comments Guy I wouldn’t want to eat an Octopus, but the reason it’s considered not okay to eat a baby but okay to eat an octopus is because a baby is one of us, dude. Has nothing to do with intelligence, but the fact that it’s instinctually wrong to eat your offspring, and cannibalism disgusts most normal people. You wouldn’t find it normal to eat a baby that was disabled and had less intelligence than an octopus? Of course not! Intelligence shouldn’t affect your treatments of other creatures
Μουσική Είναι Ζωή Who defines this? Who says because it has similar genetic information it‘s „one of us“? At which threshold is it one of us? If it has a chromosome less, is it still one of us? Why aren‘t animals one of us too?
If you look at it consciously there is no difference. You don‘t feel pain of animals, neither do you feel pain of other humans. You are all for yourself. Just the moral input we grew up with decided this.
And yea you can say genetically we want to enhance as a species, thus we see other humans as important and not food for ourselves but this is a wrong misconception. Only your direct family and offspring is not seen as a genetical competitor. And if this was not the case, we would never have seen so much war and destruction amongst humans in the first place.
@@youtubecommentsguy9805 What defines it is the fact that the grand majority of all human kind agree that eating each other is wrong lol.
It's not super complicated to understand how social structure works. It's no single person who defines that belief but the majority of humankind. Typically when there is a group that is cannibalistic it is largely due to outside forces and is not natural among the overall human race.
It's really a dumb question. You may as well go on to act like genocide is fine and that pollution is no big deal.
The fact that he knew the human could move the log is mind blowing
They’re a very intelligent species always have been
Problem solving 100
@@MicheleLeeQuinn There's a huge difference between "intelligent animal behavior" and logical inference like that. It understood that it could lift the log, but that it wasn't strong enough, but the human was, so the human could do it. This could be capacity for abstraction, which is human-like intelligence, and it is indeed mind-blowing. There is basically no difference in intellect between this octopus and human baby except the human baby gets rights.
Jacob guess you didn’t read my comment correctly ... wrote they’re a very intelligent species didn’t write they’re smarter than us n I’m guessing now I could be wrong since u didn’t understand my comment n have to write like you’re the intelligent 🤓 one with rights . Good for you !
@@MicheleLeeQuinn I also didn't say they were smarter than us. I said they were smart LIKE us.
Having done a lot of diving - I can say that the octopus is an absolute marvel to encounter. Some (mostly the younger ones) are ... So curious. At first it's like "WOW! U THREAT?!" once it establishes that you are not, it's like "Eeer ... What are you then? I've never seen one of you around before." and there begins the act of mutual curiosity :3. You slowly reach with a finger, it sends a tentacle ... you both touch, sometimes they get frightened and clamp your entire hand, flashing black before letting go, but not swimming away. They are playful, find a shiny pebble, hand it to the octopus, it'll take it, check if it can be eaten ... discard it ... then a few sec after send a tentacle back to the pebble out of curiosity as to "why did he give me this pebble ... gotta check again for anything special". They really hold a very special place in my heart, it's not everyday that two species get curious about one another and attempt mutual understanding :)
-comment from "the insane biology of: the octopus" video
I love how detailed this comment is. Im glad you were able to experience that
its rare for me to fully read a decently long detailed comment with such glee, i love it
Now if only people would see interactions like this and stop eating them while they are alive. It's so disgusting and breaks my heart like you can't imagine.....so so sad for me and them. I am too empathetic for this world when it comes to what we do to all the creatures in it.
Your writing is very eloquent. I wasn't sure I would read all of that but I could see everything so clearly in my imagination. You should write a book about your adventures.
Is this most species of octopus? I live in Hawaii and have never heard of anyone interacting with the octopus (he’e) here.
The fact that it tried communicating with her to get her to push the trunk is so smart, I had no idea they were this intelligent.
They really are intelligent animals. They have impressive memories and problem solving abilities. It's worth reading up on. They are very interesting animals.
They’re considered one of the most intelligent animals in the world, not just in the ocean. They have amazing nervous systems that allow each of their tentacles to act as a separate brain per say.
They’re much more intelligent then us in many ways, their main problem is that they have to teach themselves everything as they aren’t a social enough species, and they they have such short lifespans

I actually read a National Geographic thing awhile ago that said octopi (octopuses?) have incredible reasoning and learning skills. They're super intelligent.
They are very interesting and intelligent creatures. They can also be quite territorial as well. In Australia we have the blue ringed octopus, and there's no way you could do what she does in the video with these, they are deadly.
@KandyKane corvids are also very intelligent
@KandyKane Yes I've seen a couple of blue ringed octopus, they are quite small though, but very vibrant in colour so luckily they can be spotted easily. They are sometimes in rock pools or shallow areas. Everyone that lives here knows not to ever grab them, just look and admire. Unfortunately we have some of the deadliest creatures on the planet here in Australia, including snakes and also the funnel Web spider, luckily I live on an island state and the funnel Web aren't here, only on the mainland. But we have red back spiders, and tiger snakes as well, they are very deadly too. 😱
By the way... I've been to Canada and it was seriously one on the most amazing and stunning places I've ever been. You are very lucky to live there 😊

If i was her, and i left Egbert and never found him again I wouldn’t think like “aw darn it I should’ve kept him in a cage”
I’d just think “weLL IT WAS A GREAT TIME MEETING YOU EGBERT”

octopuses have the same amount of neurons as a dog
@dmac1824 If you think this is mind-blowing... Scientists have given those creatures puzzles some people would not be able to solve and they did it with ease. Their intelligence sometimes seems on par with humans. Not saying it is but damn you should look into it.

Octopuses are an incredibly intelligent species--respectable problem solving skills, defense capabilities out the wazoo, even a solid short-term memory. Very impressive on the grand scale of things.
Yes so beautiful and brilliant.... And people eat them!!
I used to scrape barnacles offa boats that were moored when I was a teen.
This octopus used to come hang out and after awhile i began feeding it some baitfish from time to time. Well, we became great, great pals. He (or she) would hover around and chase off the curious snooks n jacks that occasionally hit me in the face.
Well, one day he kept coming right up in my face and grabbing at me, like he was trying to pull me up from under the boat. He also started to flash like a red strobe kinda thing (he never changed colors just when he would return to his cave n settle). Honestly if it weren't an octopus I'd have thought he was panicky.
So I begin looking around, and circling the boat with its fins down and its back in a high arch is this massive, massive great hammerhead (didnt look too long but it was over 12ft). I dunno what I did to piss this shark off but I hightailed it outta there, all thanks to my octopus buddy.
(As an aside, this was when I was 15 or 16, returned @25 and he was still there, and still remembered me! I wish digital cameras were a thing then cuz i still cant find a video similar to the way he was sorta moving his colors that day. )

@@callmegary2622 I've heard stories about their intelligence and that they're one of the hardest creatures to keep contained due to their ability to problem solve and squeeze into tight areas. The story that impressed me the most was one were I heard that an octopus lived in a tank next to another tank with fish. It would wait till no one was around and climb out a gap at the top and enter the fish tank, then proceed to eat a fish or two, then return to it's own tank. It's not that amazing. Anyone who lives near the coast can swim in the ocean every day.
Wonderful story! Reminds me of my own octopus encounter. Tried to remove a few stones from his stone fort, but he'd reach right out and grab them from my hands (and replaced them exactly where they'd been). He then began feeling my hands to make sure I hadn't taken anything else. And then he did something really pretty surprising - he grabbed other outlying stones as if to taunt me with them (or maybe he was just offering them to me so I wouldn't take anymore from his fort). He had turned the tables on me. It was one of the best sea experiences I'd ever had, cause I too felt like we were communicating. Know it sounds crazy, but I think he was actually having fun with me (enjoying himself). He was a good deal larger than the one in this clip (too large for a conch), but he felt secure in his homemade fortress of rocks and shells. Really wish I coulda gone back next day just like this woman did. She was so fortunate to have had this experience (and film it too). A great memory for sure!
They have cognitive abilities on par with a six to seven year old child, with advanced problem solving skills and incredible spatial recognition. Aquarium employees will say that squids and octopi they work with have distinct personalities, too!

What a fun story about Egbert. Octopuses are extremely intelligent. It's fun to see how they each experimented with getting to know each other.
