Oilers had so many heartbreaking playoff losses
Yes several times I thought it was their year: 1979 & 1993 were 2 other times I was sure it was their year. But no shame in losing to Elway.
The Oilers defense really let their offense down in this game here and in the Buffalo game the next season; too bad, as Moon really played his heart out in both games.
Aside from the poorly timed INT at the end of that Buffalo game*
@@yetz2291 Didn't Daryl Talley yank Ernest givens down on the play, which led to the pass headed right Nate Odomes's way. Moon did have one other INT and another that was called back for roughing the passer, but c'mon, 35-3?
After it was 35-3 the Oilers offense only got 3 more points. The Oilers offense scored 3 points in the 2nd half. Pathetic
Dan Reeves’ last hurrah in Denver
He remained competitive and helped take Atlanta to a Super Bowl when nobody else thought it was a possibility. I think some credit should be given to Dan Reeves. It's too bad he wasn't successful as far as winning a championship. IMO.
He coached the Broncos the next year you dope
@@TL2354 Yeah, and they went 8-8....that's why they called it a 'last hurrah', because that expression tends to be used to describe something good....
@@christopherfoote4643 No question Reeves was underrated. He improved 3 professional teams. But he seemed to be best at getting hard work and peak effort out of his teams, which put him in the same boat as Elway...the better they both did, the more blame they took because those Broncos teams tended to overachieve. Thus, these 2 men wound up getting blamed for those Super Bowl defeats, rather than getting credit for the fact that no other coach/qb combo ever dragged a team so far....Most of Reeves' tenure in Denver, he had Elway...and a bunch of solid players, at best....Sure, towards the end, they had a pair of outstanding safeties in Smith and Atwater, but for the most part, Reeves/Elway carried a mediocre roster to an incredible degree of success.
A good example of the Houston Oilers' futile Run n' Shoot under Warren Moon: hot start but cold finish.
The next year would be even worse for Houston.

The epic collapse blowing a 32-piont lead to lose the game. And the year after that going 1 and done.
Pass first offenses in general were kind of fool's gold in those days before the added rule changes to basically give the QB even more influence and impact over the game. Especially late in playoff situations when the weather was clearly a factor. This was the same achilles heel for Dan Marino and his Dolphins. A balanced attack and/or a dominant defense was the best formula for giving yourself the best chance at winning a SB in the 80's-90's era.
Man it would suck if Treadwell misses a kick or two in the championship game...
Yeah, especially if they vastly outplay the Bills in the first half; I hope it doesn't come to that.
Or three !
John Elway at his finest. He was one of the greatest of all time , especially coming back in the 4th quarter as the clock wound down.
One of the few things these Oilers teams lacked was great coaching.
If the Oilers had like a Jimmy Johnson like head coach, they would probably win at least two Super Bowls and still remain the Houston Oilers not Tennessee Titans.
Clutch QB too
Defense in the postseason
or a decent defense.
@@jimnfl7134nah, they had good defensive teams, at least in the regular season from 1991-1993
I went to this game. SO loud.
Oilers almost won this game. So close.
The next year would be much worse.
Despite the officiating and the fact that no one ever mentions it, this remains my favorite Broncos game of all-time, including the super bowl wins. What's more, I think that final drive was even better and more dramatic than "The Drive".
Two crazy 4th down plays
Yeah, coming from the 2 yard line....and converting TWO 4th and longs...this was vintage Elway...I'm not sure which of his great comebacks is my favorite, but this would have to be in the top 5...
I was at this game and considering most of us thought it was over in the first quarter, only to pull it out in the end, made it even more exciting. And during that final drive it was twilight, cold and surreal. It was like being in an enormous frenzied pirate ship.
Weird fact: this game featured zero sacks. I mean none on either side. Both teams had good pass rushes
Back when the Houston Oilers could actually win games, nowadays it seems like they never win.
The Elway/Mile High Stadium combo was powerful- a mystique and aura that could not be ignored no matter Denver’s rosters.
Almost Notre Dame-like
@Jonathan Dee The One And Only When the NFL Network did a top 10 on Homefield Advantages, Lambeau and Mile High were 1-2 on the list
The rocky mountain jinx
Yeah, there was a kind of magic about that time and place....but Mile High Stadium is kind of like Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan...impressive, but never remotely the same without Elway...
Missed field goal by Del Greco cost the Oilers the game. Yet another choke job by the Oilers leading 21-6
That Atwater interception would have not been an interception in today nfl
I attended this game. It was pretty remarkable that Denver win it. Actually I think maybe Houston was a better team but Denver got the victory.
The Broncos were a poorly coached average roster elevated by Elway
@@chrisuncleahmad Maybe partly. Elway actually wasn't necessarily outstanding until later in his tenure although I'll be the first to admit he brought a level of perseverance and tenacity previously mostly unprecedented. I thought he played particularly well in the playoffs. The Super Bowls were tough to witness. But that was partly because he tried to make up for the difference. It's too bad really he wasn't on a better team. But he wasn't the first. Some credit belongs to Craig Morton. IMO.
@@chrisuncleahmad That might make sense in an alternative universe. The reason Denver drafted Elway was they had a player Baltimore wanted, badly. Chris Hinton. Drafted high in the draft. Meaning (sequentially) relatively little difference, other than selection. Denver drafted intelligently. Obviously. Elway wasn't as hot a commodity as some have suggested. He was outstanding. But not unprecedented. And he forfeited his pick. He wasn't traded. He refused to play for Baltimore. Chris Hinton didn't care which team drafted him. Understand? Chris Hinton was an exceptional player himself. Why does everyone always focus on quarterback? Like it's the epitomy?
Never understood the joke. But NFL Primetime even did it Back then: From? Louisville. 0:43 They would do that for Many Years.
boo booo, yeah lol i remember that joke every week
Because Tom Jackson went to Louisville. They also did that same bit for players who played at Brown University (Berman’s alma mater).
You’ll notice Tom Jackson would answer. Tom Jackson played college ball at Louisville.
@gregorylarson2640 Years later, when Brian Westbrook joined the Eagles, Boomer and TJ made those same shoutouts to him as well. BRIAN WESTBROOK FROM....VILLANOVA!!!
@@BuffaloWyoming ok thanks..
