  • This is a classic feature I found in my vault on one of my incredible Elway comebacks and one of many heartbreaking losses by my Houston Oilers. It was the 1st of 3 successive Oilers collapses in the playoffs.
    This video is a telecast, broadcast, and production of NFL Films. I claim no ownership of this material, and do not profit from it in anyway. This video is intended for historical and educational viewing purposes.

    Pretty impressive looking back to see how John Elway takes decent football teams deep into the playoffs every year. Then finally, a great time is built around him in 97 and 98, and the Broncos win two Super Bowls. This is why Elway should be mentioned as one of the greatest football players.

    • @tgriffin3059
      @tgriffin3059 Год назад +4

      By any tangible standard, he is the best. This is historical fact...no man ever dragged a team deep into the postseason on his back on a regular basis. He did it 3 times in 4 years. That is INFINITELY harder than actually winning a Super Bowl the usual way.

      I like how you said decent because that's what they were. Decent. Probably top 10-15 rosters in the league. They were good defensively, but there weren't many offensive weapons Elway carried a lot of the load in those early years. It was up to him to make plays because if he didn't, no one else on the Broncos was going to make any.

    Houston had beaten Denver 42-14 at home during the regular season - and they were either the #1 or #2 seed in the AFC all season long until December when they lost 3 games to non-playoff teams to allow the Broncos, who were 7-4 when the Oilers were 9-2, to swoop in and steal the #2 seed, resulting in them having to play this game at Mile High instead of the Astrodome.

    Thank you so much for posting this video. I was born and raised in Colorado and have been a life long fan of the Broncos since the mid 80s. This was one of those defining moments in John Elway's career which helped solidify his mystique as one of the greatest come from behind quarterbacks to ever play the game. I remember watching this game with my father and as one of those people who has become very nostalgic the older I've gotten, I cherish the memories this video brought back. Thanks again.

    As a Bronco fan, and looking back, I’m glad we lost to the Bills in the AFC Championship this season, as we would have just been blown out again in that ‘91 Super Bowl by the Redskins. That ‘91 Skins team is arguably one of the top 10 teams of all time.

    • @BuffaloWyoming

      Yeah, the novice think the Buffalo Bills choked four straight times. No. The Bills ran into two of the greatest TEAMS in the history of pro football. The 1991 Redskins and then the dynasty of the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys were a play away from going to four in a row themselves. Naturally there’s WIDE RIGHT. John Elway is underrated. John took Denver teams to Super Bowls that had no business being in Super Bowls. Was pleased when John got his two rings. Nobody ever deserved them more.

    • @tgriffin3059
      @tgriffin3059 Год назад

      @@BuffaloWyoming Well said. And one thing that usually doesn't get mentioned is Elway's incredible toughness and durability. So many of his greatest comebacks involved him making plays that nobody else could make...with the game on the line, which makes it much harder in football...but also after having spent the entire game taking hits that would have put Brady or Manning out of the game in the first quarter...The man was made out of a whole other material than most human beings...

      @@tgriffin3059 Elway is the greatest pure QB I ever saw. I’m a huge fan of John Elway and Joe Montana. Elway carried Denver teams to Super Bowls that had no business being there. He’d of beaten the Buffalo Bills in the 1991 AFC title game had he not gotten injured, he kept trying, but he was injured badly. Elway tried so hard. A real warrior. When the Broncos lost to the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV 55-10, John’s interview after that massacre was nothing but pure class. The majority of people wouldn’t of handled that so well. Elway was always humble. John got his two rings and walked off into the sunset one of the absolute best QBs ever.

    • @tgriffin3059
      @tgriffin3059 Год назад

      @@BuffaloWyoming Funny you'd mention that blowout vs. the 49ers...In the recent biography of Elway, there was a little information I had never heard. Apparently, he advised the defensive coordinator against the scheme they used that day. He knew that that particular scheme would be tailor made for Joe and that West Coast attack. Apparently even Montana, himself, was mystified over why they played that scheme. Of course, they might have lost, anyway, but if they had listened to John, I doubt the loss would have been by 45 points!!! That sheds even MORE light on just how much class he showed at that press conference...

    This was the Oilers big chance. They had the Broncos pinned back and had 4th and 10 twice and the defense couldn't hold the Broncos. All that wasted talent and when it came crashing down after the 93 season when they lost to the Chiefs, the Oilers demise was complete.
