Antigravity Battery Worth it?

  • My 4 year old Bosch AGM battery required a jump start after I left something on briefly so I can no longer trust it. I wanted to try lithium battery because of the advantages, mainly weight savings but it does come at a big price premium even with the discount. Silly enough, I convinced myself that it's like a cheap Weissach upgrade, lol.
    I got it from NormalGuySupercar.com (not affiliated/sponsored) and use the code ngs10 to save 10%. I saved paying CA tax also though your mileage may vary.

    I went with the AG H6 Group 48 40ah for my 7.2 RS. Absolutely love it! I think I could’ve gone with 30ah as I don’t have radio.

    Thought I would weigh-in on my experience with Antigravity. Would not recommend.
    Cranked the GTR great, and would drive around town fine.
    Once I put the car on the track, it was not happy. Lots of error codes:
    P1550 - Battery Current Sensor
    C1109 - ABS actuator and control unit power supply voltage
    C1145 - Yaw rate sensor malfunctioning
    Car actually shut down during a lap and had to get towed off. Drove to AutoZone, bought a standard lead acid battery and finished my weekend.
    Yes, it was kept on the tender. Yes, the connections were solid. Would have kept quiet and moved on to another lithium ion brand (which I have and zero issues), but Antigravity’s support was bad enough to share my experience.
    In short, zero help with logistics of shipping it back and more importantly despite their website and warranty form stating they offer a refund, they don’t. Best they will do is ship you a replacement.
    Didn’t want a replacement given my experience, thankfully the shop I bought it from took the replacement into inventory and the shop refunded me.
    Stay away.

      You're not supposed to use a battery tender on a lithium battery. It will cause damage. Also some cars don't like lithium because the voltage isn't exactly the same. It's not the battery, it's the car.

    Did the same thing several years ago with an Antigravity RS-30 battery on my 996TT ... VERY DISSATISFIED. Since new, the damn thing keeps turning off, randomly when starting the car.. and several years later, it barely turns over the engine after being on the battery tender. Last time out, it shut off at the gas station trying to start it .. I AM FINISHED with this crap.. $500 wasted. Buying an AGM battery today. Maybe the newer versions with higher capacity and remote restart work better?? Based on my experience, you did right getting the 60Ah model .. 40Ah may not have been enough (because 30Ah certainly is NOT, RS-30).

      Well it's relatively pricey for a battery comparing to AGM battery that is $200. The weight savings of 35lbs on this car is probably negligible also. But I do love the jump start feature as I've already had to use it a couple of times when I let the car sit for a couple of weeks with the car's parasitic draw. I do like the idea of saving that weight as I do track the car but as mentioned, you're not going to notice/feel the difference. I just hope it last at least 7-10 years based on my usage for the price. I hope this helps, thanks. Oh, I also like the higher CCA starting amps with lithium which cranks the engine super fast.

    So, if i understand correctly, you paid normal guy $949 - 10% = $854 for a 60Ah battery that weighs 17.6 lbs. When, if you had looked around the web for just a few more seconds, you would have found the exact type battery H6 ( will fit ) from LithiumMoto; 60Ah for $725 and weighs 2 lbs less at 15.4 lbs. WITH a 2ndStart feature remote FOB as well.

      So far so good, haven't been driving the car much past couple of years, recently my CTEK lithium charger is giving me a charging error light, not sure why and if issue with charger or batt. I used a non lithium CTEK charger which is not recommended but at least it charged the battery to full capacity. After that, it seems to be working for now.

      @@koruki Here's what Antigravity says about this, thanks. - Antigravity Batteries have Lifepo4 based lithium battery cells rated at 12.8 Volts. They work perfectly fine with a stock
      vehicle’s charging system that is regulated to charge at a maximum of 14.6 volts. If you do need to charge your
      Antigravity Battery use only Chargers specifically designed for charging Lifepo4 Lithium-Ion Powersports Batteries and
      charging at the correct voltage. Never use 16-Volt Chargers on 12-Volt Batteries. Do not use Lead/Acid Chargers or
      Maintainers/Tenders as they can enter Desulfinate modes which can spike the Voltage and create an Over-Charge
      condition. DO NOT USE LEAD/ACID CHARGERS. Contact us for suggestions.

    HAY COOL VID, How do you think it would do in cold weather, Like 7 Degrees Fh.

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  2 года назад +1

      Found this in the manual - In very cold weather below (40F) Lithium-Ion Batteries may have initial sluggish performance due to resistance increase in the
      battery due to cold tempuratures. This will also depend if you have chosen the correct battery size for your Motor size, too small
      of a battery will suer more in cold weather so size your battery correctly. But in general this initial slower turn over is normal
      and will actually go away when the battery is self-warmed. A Lithium Battery can be self-warmed with a few short presses (not
      start attempts) of the Start button on your vehicle to get the “Current” owing out of the battery... this self warms the battery
      and as the battery warms power will increase rapidly and will easily start the vehicle again. Additionally if you leave the lights
      on for a minute or two, this will also get the battery to self-warm because “Current” is being discharged. But it should be noted
      that if you operate your vehicle in extremely cold conditions often you might want to consider the biggest battery you can get
      for your vehicle.

      Not sure, probably for higher current needed to start the six cylinder engine and to have more capacity/reserve to run electronics like the stereo when parked and is also good when car is sitting for a long time un driven. I suspect most sports/toy car fall in this category.

    Hello. I did not think you needed a new charger. The dynamo on the car is the same.

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  3 года назад

      The CTek charger I have will charge the battery but it will probably reduce the life of the lithium cell if left plugged in after charging is done as the charging methods between the two types of batteries are very different. But again, I'm hoping I won't need to trickle charge the lithium because unlike lead acid that should be store fully charged to avoid sulfating, lithium has a much slower self discharge and should be stored around 50% charge state for longer life. It will depend on the amount of parasitic draw and how often I drive the car, but I'm glad to have the BMS with the jump start feature.

    • @AntigravityBatteries
      @AntigravityBatteries 2 года назад +1

      @@atm4jim We actually recommend Ctek chargers. Trickle charging should not be necessary at all, really. A lithium type charger should be used for a lithium battery.

    I don't see as to how this is an "upgrade"; did the original or replacement AGM not start the vehicle? A few points to the so-called "Features & Benefits" 1) how will I get 2 to 3 times the life from an AntiGravity battery when I get 14 and 16 years out of my "conventional lead acid batteries" in my daily drivers. In fact the factory fitted Banner battery (80 Ah) H7/94R in my 991.1 GTS will be going into its 9th year this coming May. 2) Low self discharge only applies to a battery that is disconnected. When connected, the battery relies on the Ah rating of the battery when loads such as security systems are on. As for the low weight, why would I want my C of G moving further back on an already tail heavy vehicle? As for cost, the $1200 for the AntiGravity 80 Ah battery will buy me at least FIVE 80 Ah AGM batteries from East Penn. And with two 911s in the garage, its not a matter of being cheap, its a matter of being smart and not jumping on the bandwagon.

      And don't forget the added output, wireless jumpstarting, BMS built into the battery... and the 15 year warranty... and the fact the lifespan is around 3x that of lead due to 3x the cycles (1000 cycles for lead vs 3000 for lithium)... It's more than just the weight reduction. It is literally more power - cranking amps, reserve power, amp hours...
