  • We know Beethoven as the grumpy, deaf, messy-haired "inventor" of Romantic music. Have you ever seen a painting of the man smiling? And yet, his lifelong friendship with Archduke Rudolf reveals an entirely different man, revealed through a huge body of music that is very different to the "dun dun dun DUNNN" that we all know - not least of which the piano sonata "Les Adieux", composed specifically for Rudolph when he and the Imperial royal family were forced to leave Vienna in the face of the advancing French army in 1809. The first movement "Das Lebewohl" (the farewell) was composed before Rudolph left; the second "Die Abwesenheit" (the absence) was composed during his exile; and Beethoven promised not to compose the final movement, "Das Wiedersehen" (the reunion) until the Archduke returned to Vienna.
