While it's cool that they managed to germinate the 2000 year old seeds, the Judean date isn't a specific variety - the genetics of the seeds recovered are diverse, and are captured in various modern day populations. They aren't being sold commercially (yet), as there are only a few plants, and the dates are less domesticated (much smaller, larger seeds, less productive) than modern day varieties. It's more interesting for historical reasons - for instance, the fact that the genetic makeup is so diverse indicates that the area was a strong trade hub.

Deglet noir are easily the best I've have. May not be the sweetest, but the texture is better than most! Also, the cultivar is actually a hybrid between phoenix dactylifera and pheonix theophrasti (which is also the only other palm native to Europe)

I actually quite like the "Fully dried" date variety, but I treat it less like a date and more like a "nut", like a peanut or a cashew if that makes sense, and it's also used to make a variety of product from date-sugar, to "Rouina" which is a powder made from a variety of ingredients (like dates, chickpeas, spices.....etc) that is mixed with water to create a sort of "paste" that is eaten for breakfast or with coffee...etc
I just checked around and there is a small shop in Houston that sells Deglat Nour Dates that are half unripe grown locally! I've always wanted to try dates fresh (or fresher than the local kroger can provide).
The Oasis date farm in California by Death Valley has more than a dozen varieties of dates. It has tons of date products - especially the amazing date shake. Very unique fun visit
@@joetilman7227 oops China ranch was actually the one I had intended to mention. Nice hot springs nearby too. I've actually not been to the Oasis date gardens but it's on my list
I bought some medjool dates online, it was a big difference between them and the store bought ones. They were much softer and juicier. Mother nature's candy is what I call them.
That’s exactly what I said when I first tried medjools. I first turned up my nose and said they looked like poops. Then I tried it and screamed “OH MY GOD, THEY TASTE LIKE CANDY!”
I had some of the best dates in my life in the Middle East. There are so many varieties. The one I liked the most was the Medjool which are luckily kind of common here in America. But I’ve definitely had some bad dates here and even the Medjools I’ve bought here aren’t as good.
Best thing in this world to try is dates filled with peanut or almond butter and dipped in chocolate. Use an all natural nut butter and sprinkle with sea salt. Better than any candy bar out there by far. Better than most fine chocolates even.
We grow a lot of Deglet Noor in California. Often available partially dried at Farmer’s Markets. I highly recommend you contact Oasis Date Products and do another video on date cultivars. They grow and sell about 20 varieties of dates in California’s Coachella Valley. In addition, California has its own indigenous palm drupes, the California Fan Palm which indigenous tribes have eaten for centuries.
Just a tidbit for anyone wanting to eat fully dry dates, please take out the seed and wash the inside of the dates. I've eaten them for years and they almost always have dead bugs in them (probably because they're hollow on the inside from the extra dryness compared to the soft dry dates). I've recently ate dry Palestinian medjool dates (I usually eat the soft wet Palestinian medjools so this was new for me). I bit half of it before looking taking out the seed and saw dead bugs inside (kinda look like weevils).
The best quality date you could have is the one where when you pick it out of the branch, the fruit just slides out of the stem, and the stem actually stays on the branch. That's peak Deglet Nor.
Super sugary dates are the perfect camping food. Very little room taken up per calorie. I actually live near a ton of date farms in the California desert. I live the sweet dates.

my favorite one is the "unripe", they can have several colors and shapes depending on the strains or variety selected, in fact they are ripe, but not calmed down. If you wait 3 or 4 days, they will be "ripe", at the first stage.
Awesome video as always, Jared! If you ever want to try more dates, check out China Ranch in Death Valley. They grow loads of different varieties of dates right there in the California desert, including Deglet Nors, and they ship! I was there last week and it was an amazing place, a literal oasis in the desert. The dates were delicious - the Black Beauty was my favourite variety!
Great info. The US has sooo much to learn about fruits and vegetables, a rich, rich world of variety. Will never forget the Black Sphinx dates I found in Tucson, AZ years ago--always made me want to eat it with black coffee. BTW, massive appreciation that you're helping to enrich our palates, for sure.
From what i see the problem with the US is capitalism they favor shelf life and sweetness over quality fruit while the Algerian market is fairly undeveloped still dependent on independent farmers's fruit and vegetables who themselves follow natural season which leads to small production but more natural and organic fruits
8:50 good you mentioned that as an Algerian myself i tried all types of deglat ripeness but the extremely dried one is my favourite for me to snack on it
You’re most welcome to visit Saudi Arabia. We have tons of dates varieties each with its own unique flavors. We also have a farmers market for dates, hope to see you visit us!
I know that the Siwa Oasis in Egypt has like three varieties of dates that are special to the area (in common with a lot of oases I think). I really like ajwa dates, some Saudi guys that went to the local university import them in a small way. Might go pick some up right now!
When I was walking around homeless in Miami Beach, I lived off dropped dates and coconuts. At other times when I wasn't homeless but still no money for food...dates. One time these landscaping guys were cutting down the dates from a date palm, and they let me bring home a trash bag full of dates.
Your cat 😍 i love dates, most of the time we just get medjool or zamli fresh here in the uk, and they’re still partially dried and not completely fresh
Good episode - dates are really tasty. We got some assorted chocolate covered ones recently that were like toffees.I think they were Medjool dates. I'd like to try the fresh ones as I've always wondered about them.
in tolga (biskra) there is a variety of date that is transparent and so sweet that it cannot be packaged; it is made as soon as it is picked and there is another that has no pit; they are rarely found in the market
There is a reason why Algerian date nor is the best in the world there is no chewiness when you eat it it's juicy it's perfect that makes it unique in Algeria we have more than 500 varieties of dates but this one deglet Noor has 95% of the market which is incredible
You used to be able to get fresh "unripe" dates and other exotic fruits at Joe Randazzo's on Joy and Telegraph in Deerborn Heights outside of Detroit. Lots of exotic fruits and vegetables there, many I didn't know the name of, but very inexpensive too so we did a lot of exploring as a young family based on the availability of things. No idea what it's like now 8 years later but I can't imagine the area becoming less culturally diverse and they were always busy. I've never seen fresh dates since, but now i know that if you see fresh dates, you buy them.
Great video! By the way, any date can be used to break the fast. The Ajwa is given significance in Islam because it was the prophet's favorite (peace he upon him).
Love dates! Need to try more kinds. I can sometimes find fresh unripe ones in stores, might try to buy some and see if they ripen so I can try the less dried styles. My favorite kinds are medjool (huge, medium brown, toffee like consistency) and sukkary (usually from saudi arabia, light golden color and incredibly sweet).
The last one isn’t specifically from medina, in algeria we grow this kind of date but its really rare, u can find one tree of this date each 100 tree thats why it expensive and we call this ( tantbocht )
If you can go to the south of the country, there are vibrantly colored date varieties (Yellow Red and Green, some with 2 colors) that are only eaten fresh, don’t last more than 2-3 when picked, and are not available in the Capital City, because they spoil super fast. You might want to try them Ghardaïa or further south.
If you want to eat different varieties of Algeria dates, you have to head to Biskra where hundreds of varieties exist, and they are fresh since they are produced locally.
Date shop!! they have date markets that are the same size or bigger than the usual fruit/veg markets but selling only dates, hundred of varieties in all their stages. The dried one is called ballah.
I like half-unripe because it's sweeter than unripe, but still healthier than the riper/dried versions. Dried dates are very low in water and very high in sugar, which makes them not quite as healthy as you might think. Yes, healthier than candy or cake, but still diet busters.
The ripeness factor it important in many palm seeds. Coconuts, ipa, dates as well as other edible palm seeds. I find it very interesting and enjoy your explorations.
I like how You can tell if a dates one of the better ones in the package by looking at it in the box. You get to learn what the dry ones look like after you eat them for awhile.

There is also dates butter , you should try when you get a chance to visit Algeria
Love the ripeness varieties covered, only had dates once or twice.
my mouth was watering during the entire video
"...like a date that has been visited by a vampire". LOL
Your cat 😍 i love dates, most of the time we just get medjool or zamli fresh here in the uk, and they’re still partially dried and not completely fresh
I buy my fresh unripe dates at a great farm in palm spring around August to September.
Had the best “datiles” near calexico while on bike tour this year from a non english speaker on the side of the road. My favorite survival food!
I can't believe I missed this episode. I should have marked the date on the calendar.
Good episode - dates are really tasty.
We got some assorted chocolate covered ones recently that were like toffees.I think they were Medjool dates.
I'd like to try the fresh ones as I've always wondered about them.
The places that grow dates in the US have used a lot of the Algerian experience in growing dates
I love dates, would love to try different varieties!
in tolga (biskra) there is a variety of date that is transparent and so sweet that it cannot be packaged; it is made as soon as it is picked and there is another that has no pit; they are rarely found in the market
What a great video ! Thank you, it was very enriching Jared
Glad you enjoyed it!
My favorite kinds are medjool (huge, medium brown, toffee like consistency) and sukkary (usually from saudi arabia, light golden color and incredibly sweet).
you have to try unripe and ripe barhi dates, probably my favorite date type
The last one isn’t specifically from medina, in algeria we grow this kind of date but its really rare, u can find one tree of this date each 100 tree thats why it expensive and we call this ( tantbocht )
If you can go to the south of the country, there are vibrantly colored date varieties (Yellow Red and Green, some with 2 colors) that are only eaten fresh, don’t last more than 2-3 when picked, and are not available in the Capital City, because they spoil super fast.
You might want to try them Ghardaïa or further south.
This was genuinely interesting! Whan Your stomac allows it again, would You mind making more episodes about Dates?
If you want to eat different varieties of Algeria dates, you have to head to Biskra where hundreds of varieties exist, and they are fresh since they are produced locally.
You should try Mabroom and Majdool varieties too. There are a few more varieties but these are the most popular other than Ajwa and Deglet Noor.
Date shop!! they have date markets that are the same size or bigger than the usual fruit/veg markets but selling only dates, hundred of varieties in all their stages.
I just learned of a fruit today- CECROPIA - which I noticed you haven’t filmed!! Please do look into this fruit which can grow in South Florida!!
The ripeness factor it important in many palm seeds. Coconuts, ipa, dates as well as other edible palm seeds. I find it very interesting and enjoy your explorations.
Dried dates can be rehydrated. While not as yummy as fresher they are useful for keeping against food crises.
Not classic but chocolate a pistachio dates at Iftār during Ramadhān is undefeated
hope you enjoyed ur stay here dates here are amazin infact most of our desserts have a date paste inside of them
Darn it! Now I really want dates! They are like tamarinds but cheaper and different.
Those black dates taste like "amarene" to me.
"Amarene" are sour cherries preserved in syrup, usually eaten with ice cream.
I like how You can tell if a dates one of the better ones in the package by looking at it in the box. You get to learn what the dry ones look like after you eat them for awhile.
The first Westerner to understand Algerians' love for their dates.
Hi, my respects from Algiers 🙂🎩 .
