It is probably high malic acid. That is what gives berries, apples, pears, and other non-citrus fruits their distinctive fruit flavor. Malic acid is less bright and more rounded than citric acid.

Funny from the start but honestly it's when you said "people like it both ways" that I genuinely lost it lol.
I'm thinking this might be a good banana for making a split! Especially if it lends itself to the 3-way split easily. From there it should be easy to slice off the seed strand, and get going with the ice cream and toppings. Based on your description, I imagine it will go great with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and crushed nuts.

Funny you say about it having a berry flavour. I have a large patch of wild raspberries growing near the house & they taste like bananas. It's not just me who thinks so, whenever I serve them up to friends they think I've done something to them to make them taste that way. 🍌

@@valkyrie1066 There is a gold/yellow type of raspberry called "Anne" which is noted for its banana like taste. But the ones near me are all wild/feral raspberries [and red]. I live in Perthshire, Scotland & the counties of Perthshire, Tayside & Angus are all renowned for the quality of their soft fruits like raspberries & strawberries.
I suppose I could try defining the cultivar that's growing in that patch, though it may just be a wild variety that isn't noted anywhere? Different patches all have different flavours . There are over 200 species of raspberries & 400 types of brambles out there & we have a fair few of them growing wild around here so I may never know unfortunately. I'm lucky as there's also blaeberries, gooseberries & cloudberries as well as lots of stone fruit like sloes, plums, greengages, bullace & damsons all growing wild nearby.
When I was living in Brazil I could typically find 5 types of bananas in the super market, only one of them Cavendish
Banana Ouro (golden banana, small and sweet), Banana Maçã (with a hint of apple), Banana da Terra (sort of like a plantain but can be eaten raw as well), Banana Prata (like a sturdier Cavendish) and Banana Nanica (Cavendish), in many places you could find other varieties as well but these where the most common.
Banana Terra by the way is perfect for making an awesome Banana Cheviche

2 Banana Terra, peel and chop into small cubes, alternatively use 2 green plantains peel and boil in water for about 20 minutes, then chop into small cubes
1 small red/purple onion, very thinly sliced
2 minced garlic cloves (optional)
2 multicolored peppers, cut into small cubes (a combination of colors: red, green, orange or yellow)
1/2 cup cilantro leaves, finely chopped
3/4 cup lime juice
3/4 cup orange juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Put the bowl with the Cheviche in the fridge and let it marinate for 10-15 minutes before serving

we should try to genetically enígineer bananas to have seeds again, but instead of being evenly distributed they are clsurered near the tip/stem. that way we could plant bananas instead of using trimmings while still enjoying a seed free banana (basically)

I see a lot of different bananas in the local market, but the unusual ones, like really thick, with red peelings, really long ones (2ft or so), seedy, really small ones (smallest finger size) usually come from mountains or personal gardens, we are thankful for the ones that generously donate to your channel so we can see them or have their names or scientific names be known. 👍🏾

Awesome review! It’s definitely surprising to find a banana fruit that is in many ways preferable to a cavendish as a dessert and also in ways preferable to a plantain for savory cooking applications! Also awesome stop motion ad for olive oil, and a great reminder to order from Miami Fruit again.

A giant banana for your mother's day episode... hilarious.
I always take a sharp knife and make a slit on the "neck" (stem), most of the way through the rind.
Then, when I bend the stem back, the slit will snap open, and the banana will readily peel without trouble (or effort).
I find that if I do _not_ do this, the end tends to "mush" from the pressure of torquing back on the stem to force the initial opening.

I once found and ate a double banana. consider it a co-joined twin gruit/ One thick stem inside one peel but with two whole sife by side bananas inside the peel. you could see how the two fruits had a common side like two hexafonal tubes side by side The fruit flesh was connected though/

I've opened regular bananas from the stem and the bottom. The only real difference I noticed was that I don't get as many of the strings opening it from the bottom.

They sell these at the local supermarkets here like Presidente, Sedanos, Fresco Y Mas. They are also grown in some backyards. Miami Florida.

Opening banana’s from the bottom is how wild primates (monkeys etc.) eat them in nature.
Different monkeys open bananas different ways - it depends on the monkey and the type of banana. Just like humans.
Fully agree with you on there being nothing wrong with opening regular bananas at the stem end. I've tried the other end lots of times and it's no easier at all (if anything it's more awkward), and it doesn't remove the stringy bits better as is also often claimed.
A lot of people who've latched onto opening bananas at the non-stem end say it MUST be better "because that's how monkeys do it". Actually watch videos of monkeys eating bananas though and they don't have a set technique, they just rip them open whichever way they happen to be holding them at the time (very often lengthways).
I'd almost always struggle to open bananas until someone taught me to open it from the other end and now all the struggling is a thing from the past. If you like ripe bananas, opening them from the stem end won't rip the skin properly (or at all, even) and the flesh will turn to mush, which is pretty darn gross. You guys must be eating green bananas to not notice any difference because the difference is night and day with a ripe banana.
The main argument would be that the stem/peduncle end is much tougher/fibrous for the simple reason that it has evolved that way to support the weight of the banana which is often pointing upwards from the rest of the infructescence whereas the other end didn't really get any evolutionary pressure to become as tough because there isn't any reason for it to be. But yeah, keep on believing that we're mimicking monkeys if it makes you feel better.

The skin is only that tough when they're so unripe as to be inedible. Any even moderately ripe banana is extremely easy to open at either end.
Also I didn't say stem-end is the way monkeys do it, I said that the common claim that monkeys open bananas at the other end is bogus.

When I was in Suriname, South America (for 3 years), on a plantagion, I got on one day a large banana called Gedang Radja (Gedang is Javanese for banana, Radja = king) which was as long as my forearm and as thick as my upper arm. It was a banana type, consistency as the Cavendish but much more tasteful, sweet and light and could be eaten raw (when ripe which it was, yellow).

They have all kinds of Musa varieties, like some 20 types of Banana, from pinky-toe banana ("Fingy Bakba" aka finger bakove/banana) and several types of plantain (which they call "banana", good for boiling, baking, frying but not raw eating unless over-ripe so black) .
Some favorites: Apple Bakove, "Injy Bakba" (pink to red inside).
Also many Asian fruits and many types of Citrus fruits.
For tourists it is an expensive country, in comparison, but the flight is not far.
Good country for Eco Tourism.

Its quite large and has a thin peel, so I'd guess it doesn't ship well.
Yeah, Cavendish rule the world ecause they are productive, ship well and have a long shelf life. It's a shame that flavor isn't a bigger factor
Probably too big. A normal human being can't eat an entire banana of this size, so it's not super convenient...you'll need to cut it in half, then put the other half in the fridge...plus the peel of a mature banana of this variety is thin, gets easily bruise, so you can't throw it just like that in your backpack, short shelf life...

@@Call-me-Al Sure, but baking is occasional, it's not like people will bake some banana cake every day! Not even once a week...People like traditional bananas because of their convenience. Shelf life at room temperature is reasonably long, you can throw them in a backpack for a snack...

The stem end of a banana is the bottom. Monkeys use the blossom end hence why people claim it is the 'correct' end.

It does matter if you open a banana stem end first because if you do it the other way instead, those little white stringy pieces go with the peel so you don't have to peel those off as well.

On bananas, you should definitely try sourcing some Rastali bananas, plentiful back in my home country and I think about them every time I have breakfast, having migrated far far away. Point of clarification. The stem end is the bottom on ALL bananas. Clearly the flower end is the top.
Raspberry flavoring is often made from (or rather extracted from) bananas.
I was watching a food show and the blunt end is the way to open it - or so was claimed.
