Here it is! The first of MANY episodes that I filmed while traveling with my fruit hunting friend, Steven Murray.
If you didn't see our past adventure to Madagascar and The Seychelles, check out that playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLvGFkMrO1ZxLkn9gzrMkR2qwhw-EUpCRd
Id love for you to find an excuse to go to Malta.
You should try other species of bananas like musa basjoo cold hardy banana or try pink bananas musa veluntina, you should also go and see the worlds largest banana tree musa ingens.
@@Youdontknowmeson1324 there is a pink banana video :) working on the others
Glad you’re over in this part of the world! Hoping you’ll eventually check out the maiʻa hāpai (pregnant banana)!
Great!
Imagine you are one of the locals - seeing two guys eating a banana like they never saw one before.
😂😂😂
Its like the inverse of those "tribal people try a hamburger" videos lmao
weird banana explorer
That brings up a different image to me
😐
That’s what she said
That’s the most homofriendly thing since Five Guys
This sounds super wrong 😂
(Or super good, I don't judge)
Steven should do more videos! He's an endless reservoir of knowledge
Right! Very cool how he knows so much about fruit
I would watch Stephen takes care of his family farm and also tells me fruit facts
Both the cooked unripe and the ripe variant sounded pretty tasty. I really wish we had more bananas commercially available than the cavendish.
try non-American grocers in your area. Asian stores have terrific variety of (for Americans) unusual produce. Also, African, Caribbean, Latin grocers. Surprisingly good quality and decent prices, too. Source - I work in a grocery store, and love to shop at "ethnic" grocery stores.
I've been trying to grow cold hardy bananas, and then breed them. There's some nice cold hardy-ish varieties out there. Most bananas are cloned.
I'm trying to grow a forest of every banana variety I possibly can. Luckily I'm in zone 9 and have a big greenhouse so should be a large number of varieties!
Good to see the Dynamic Fruit Duo back in action! And those naners are pretty darn interesting!
After seeing you eat fruit and even fruit that wasn't ripe enough, I ended up imitating you right away, and now I'm back to eating fruit, which I'd hardly eaten for years, despite the full fruit baskets in the kitchen. My health thanks you.
First afraid of opening bottles with the knife, then proceeds to eat with the blade. Lmao! :D
I love Steven Murray. The two of you together nerding over fruit is the best 👌 Don’t forget to try the Vanuatuan Grapefruit ‘Pompelmousse’ - super sweet and delicious 😋
I love the fact that you used Earthbound music in your video
That banana kind of looks like a loaf when cooked
Yes! I was wondering if anyone else caught the Earthbound music! So nostalgic
Always pass by the murray family farms and get reminded of Steven, glad he's back in another video!
Your the only youtuber i watch Jared! Your a big inspiration in the living of my life, i feel so passionate about fruit as well and a big part of this is your videos, I think you have such a beautiful perspective and I have recommended your channel to multiple friends. My best friend in the world is the one who showed me your channel years ago and we regularly talk about it. Thank you :)
so glad to hear that!
@@WeirdExplorer man, it must feel good to have comments like this. Nearly all your feedback is positive, I don't get any feedback at all on my job. 🙂 I don't mind but it would feel good if I did.
FYI: That's probably not a bottle opening on the knife - it's a twine cutter. Meant for hooking around twine & pulling to cut it. I want one of those 'chestnutty' banana plants. Unlikely to get it, though, I know. Sigh.
Murray is looking healthier! good for him.
Seeing how comfortable this sweaty this guy is is empowering every time I see him in humid hot places
Summer in NYC will condition you for it
@@lymphy12 he doesn’t look very conditioned and the weather rn in nyc is bad but not Madagascar bad
Musa Ingens, Giant Highland Banana grows in the mountain forests of New island of New Guinea at high altitudes. It can grow up to 50 feet high. The plant can hold up to 300 fruits, weighing 132 pounds.
wasn't the fruit of Musa ingens very small and full of seeds? I remember watching a YT clip from Wild on camera and they said that no one eats them because it doesn't taste well and the fruit is so high up beyond one's reach.
@@neginegi5182 I've seen them eaten green & ripe, they are normally seedy, and they are large.
After seeing this, I went down a bit of a banana-sized rabbit hole on your earlier banana reviews - I just got back from a trip where I was able to try 4 new banana varieties, and I wanted to hear your perspective. The apple banana was my favorite, so I naturally ended up on your April fools video. Just wanted to share some appreciation for the depth (and humor) of your impressive accumulated content!
Big fan of Mr. Murray. More of him. Great video as always. Very fascinating part of the world you're in. Thank you
More to come!
YAY!!!! Hi, Steven!!!! It's very nice to see you again! Glad to see you are doing well!
Awesome seeing Steve on the channel again!
Now, I’m wanting to see a review of one of the large bananas with jelly he referenced.
we found one after this in New Caledonia. it'll be a while until that one goes up though
I love it when Steve is with you! Love you both experiencing and learning.
It's great to see you two reunited and back on the road! ❤😊
I continue to be astounded that this guy and StyroPyro have somehow survived their own youtube content.
Fun video as always and I appreciate your insert of some Earthbound music at 4:40
My husband goes, "Are you watching that weird fruit man?" 😂
thank your husband for giving me the perfect title if I ever make a comic book 😄
@@WeirdExplorer: Right now, I'm imagining the DC crossover event, where Weird Fruit Man defeats The Joker by dropping over a thousand durian on top of the villain's head.
Omg, that’s funny. I’ll start telling my husband, I was watching Weird fruit explorer and he’ll look at me like I’m such a weirdo before I can even tell him about the cool things.
Yes, I've been needing some more classic banana shenanigans on the channel!
Good thing Steve was there to help you with that giant banana; a pound of fruit in one skin! Now you only have one more giant banana on your list: the Giant Highland banana of New Guinea....
EARTHBOUND TRAVEL MUSIC YAY
I just finished playing it for the first time. such great music 🎶
That was a surprise to hear lol
@@WeirdExplorer It's a truly adorable game. And yes, the music is unforgettable!
I’d love to see you review the Wani White Mango of Bali if you happen to stop there on this trip (apologies if you already have and I missed it 😂)!
Yeah! Return of the fruit duo. 🤝
Yay!! Steve is back
1:00 that flight path hahaha
Wow! Its great to see you two together again. I feel like things might be getting back on track!
Yeah, it has that orange color like a hua moa, even when the skin is green is what surprised me the most
was hoping to see you two toguether again.
Great video as always
I don't even like bananas but I'm committed to this channel godamn it
Great vid !!!
Thanks Aurelio & Nilani!!
oh my god that transition music just gave me nostalgia
the return of Steven!
Steve wears same shirt in Vanuatu and Fiji. Nice Promotion
ey, hey again, steven! it's good to see ya! those bananas are monstrous - I want to eat a whole bunch of em.
That is quite the trip! :)
I think this is a Musa troglodytarum cultivar (Fe’i-banana) they are quite common in this region and are very diverse in shapes, sizes and color.
Cool Bananas
You could slice that last one like a steak and even fry it. Fried banana steaks. Baller as hell.
Now whenever I see an knife like that, I think of the "bad idea knife".
You are very close to the country inwant to visite the most ! I realy want to see Tuvalu. Its so small and looks beautyfull.
Dog ripe plantain ain’t stale tasting, ain’t there Boricua in New York?? GREAT VIDEO so glad you could finally do your trip!
I was distracted by the passing cars in the background
Anyways those bananas are huge!
1:02 I hope that wasn't the actual flight path. lol
You should review Palmyra palm fruit.
I saw that on Mark Wiens channel where he visited Fiji and posted the video yesterday. I was wondering if you've covered the giant banana yet
Would be nice to meet you in person, wonder if you'll be coming down to Suva 😊
As a kid growing up in the Caribbean, we had a banana called the " Gros Michel" which is French for " Big Michael" >insert favorite banana pun
Those used to be the standard banana shipped and consumed globally. Until Fusarium wilt wiped out a huge amount of the cultivar.
@@SlavicCelery
Yup
I think after the fusarium depleted large corporate plantations, they ( United Fruit ) developed the Cavendish variety to maintain control of the global trade.
Many in the Caribbean still grow the Gros Michael, but for local consumption.
However, because 99% of all bananas are clones ( plantlets from tissue culture labs or sucker plants from parents ) the fusariums is back , now being called
" Panama Disease"..
So currently, they are working on another , more tolerant variety, that meets market requirements.
My understanding is that the Colombian researchers have made some kind of breakthrough.
@@danechristmas6570 The Michael Gros have started popping up every now and then in select markets in North America.
That and now we more frequently see a few of the varieties of Banana cultivar at the most basic of grocery store (at least more than just cavendish).
I'll be curious to see the breakthroughs in the new varieties.
Wow! That looks like the box the butt-buster came in!
Awesome
Happy to see you in the videos again, really enjoy your knowledge and presence.
Steven Murray!
At 5:12 was Steven making the LOZ chest opening sound? 😄
Have you tried the ube/african pear?
appreciate the earthbound cameo lol. Are you going to be dropping by PNG, New Zealand or Australia?
Australia!
@@WeirdExplorerREALLY?!!
I notice your plane isn't heading to NZ. Good call bro. Come in our summer.
I really loved this episode, and, as an aside, it looks like Steve's lost a bit of weight.
Looking good, sir.
So something I didn’t know, I saw banana trees at the nursery and that one made bananas about a year after planting according to the tag.
Me coming to watch this video: 🎶 Show me the banana, na na na na na 🎶
I haven't have that kind of banana before what type of banana and what market did you find that banana
yumm i love bananas
Have you ever tried the coffee fruit?
Please type a pomplimus (not sure how to spell it) whilst your in Vanuatu. They are like pamelo but so much sweater and juicier. I just about lived on them when I was there. So nice, but than all the fruit is amazing in Vanuatu.
If it's close to a plantain it's going to taste a lot better with salt on it after being cooked.
that means you are coming to new zealand and trying our feijoas and seeing a difference between south americas and of cause finding more fruits that i dont know about
I didn't get to New Zealand this time around, we visited fiji, vanuatu, New Caledonia and Australia. there will have to be another trip in the future 😄
@@WeirdExplorer aaaahhhhh nuts
you got some notable patreon members.
Does look a lot like hua moa, I wonder if it's a cultivar that branch off from the same origin as hua moa.
I luv bananas! 😀
4:42 EARTHBOUND MUSIC? 🤝
went to make sure and YEAH that’s the sky runner theme !
It looks like it is uncomfortably humid there
bula
From Rakiraki, Fiji.
Looks like saba banana from the Philippines... We also cook it like plantains... And eat it fresh if it's ripe. And green ones is not edible you must cook it
oh. this reminds me...ddi you ever taste the new coca cola ultimate? A experienced fruit connoisseur would make a great soda taster... as you have done.
❤❤
Those were not any Fei I have ever seen. Looked more like the banana suffered from rust Thrip. A common banana problem that effects the skin only. Alligator skin. Fei banana tend to have a different shape. Though you were in the right place for Fei and there are up to 25 varieties if you did not open one to find that florescent orange flesh then it was probably something else. The ones right next to that bunch looked like Fei. Aloha!
So do any of these kinds of banans have seeds in them? Or are they all cloned like cavendish bananas?
All cloned with no seeds
@@stevenmurray3238 aww, darn...
Good job finding a real knife! I'm glad you didn't cut anyone on camera. Was that $2.95 FJD ? What a bargain!
Biting chunks out of the side of the banana like a great white fruit shark was the best part.
Na na... nana.. na na na na... nana nana nana nana NA NA NAAAAAA!
How is it cooked?
in fiji they boil them, in Vanuatu they make something called laplap which is a firm paste. future video on that coming up
@@WeirdExplorer Thanks. I lived there for 3 1/2 years as a child. I can remember Taro and Cassava, but not these bananas. It was a long time ago. Breadfruit too on the carb front.
Are you going to start adding in veggies? There are lots of variants there. Kava is another one that might be interesting. You could video the effects over time. ie. Knocking it back as part of a school play.
Fruits I do remember, pineapples, guava, mangos. On the later, green with curry powder and vinegar. Green mangos are a different fruit entirely, and when they start to turn yellow/orange they are great.
I'd also be interested in what the taste of coco de mer is, and if its different. Not that they had them in Fiji.
PS. Not that its PC, but turtle is delicious.
Just watching these kids stare at them
I can't find Steven's fb/ig :/
should come up @Murraystevana2
Do these happen to have naughty names like the hua moa? Speaking of…I am trying to convince a local grocery store to get some hua moas next year for pride month…
Reminds me of the Hawaiian banana.
You:
The guy she tells you not to worry about:
sometimes I forget these aren't live and I'm like, oh no what if they barf or they just poisoned themselves?!!
Bet that'd be tasty in a tomato based stew.
There is nothing strange about the Banana. Over 50 varieties are grown in Bharat including the ones in the video. One of varieties has crimson skin. People used to Cavendish for generations have no idea of the different varieties as small as three ins to 8 to 10 ins.
Yes,that's why it's unusual for us. If you look, there's a LOT of banana videos on the channel. It's a shame we don't get more variety. It's basically Cavendish and plantain and that's it.
The scientific name is Banana Chungus
a 60 psi cavendish. 😃
Gadzoooks.
Fiji, every romantic couples dream ⛱️
I believe this banana is from the sam sub specias as the girthy, erect hawaiian plantain.
I wounder why the kid kick Weird Explorer?
GIRTH
That the real banana , more healthy than the. Average banana that full of sugar💔
