@@cld-lol Great question. Musicians wore reverse colors so that they would be seen as non-combatants. This is why you see other colonial fife and drum reenactment units, such as at Williamsburg and Ft. Ticonderoga, wearing run coats rather than blue.
@@cld-lol I know I’m a year late, but at 4:38 the narrator skims over explaining why musicians wore reverse colors. More in-depth is exactly how Mr. Statham explained. Easier for the enemies to tell who to not shoot at, and it was easier for the commanders to distinguish where the musicians were on the field.
The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard" never ceases to amaze me with their performance, perfection and professionalism! I could think of no better unit to represent our United States of America! Seeing them perform here is great but once you see them perform in person you'll come away not only awe inspired but with a greater appreciation for the amount of time, energy and commitment it takes to put these amazing and outstanding presentations together!
Although I was never in the Old Guard; I was an army band drummer, and I can tell you these are some of the finest people and musicians your money can buy. SSG Carl "Ernie/Woody" Woodruff(Ret.)
I saw them live for the first time ever six years ago. A video doesn't really do justice at just how amazingly good they are! Heard that they practically stole the show at the 2017 Basel Tattoo in Switzerland.
BobagemLixo Musicians wore colours opposite the combatants. British musicians wore yellow during the Revolutionary War period. (Most American forces wore a blue coat trimmed in red or white, the British wore red trimmed in yellow)
nicolew100 Yes, ma'm. I'm aware of that. I just wanted to mention that the US Army Old Guard's uniform is similar to that of a specific regiment of the then British army.
I will gladly sacrifice my life and treasure for my God given Constitution and Republic!!!…especially the 1st and 2nd…the 2nd is there for the support of all others…it’s the only one that emphatically states “shall not be infringed”…think about it !
Those drummers are doing some pretty amazing things with the time signature. It would be a grand accompaniment to a video like this to have an interview with one who can explain - with examples - some of the moves they are making.
All the choreography in the world wouldn't be worth a darn if it weren't for the disciplined individuals like these. Congratulations ladies and gentlemen. U represent our country well and give us pride.
I can Visualize the fife and drum marching cadence as they Marched to lay siege on Yorktown. Thank you ancestors for your service and sacrifice. My you rest in peace your troubles are behind you.
Yea, this particular set I believe were Buchler drums from Switzerland. 17" heads by 20" deep, with gut snares. I think we were using some type of swiss kevlar head at the time as well. And the drums are put into a rope tension hydraulic press (lightly) to get even tension on the rims, then the rope is pulled evenly around the drum and tide off with a pig tail and the left over rope is woven into the drag rope.
Really great all around! However, I’m especially captivated by the snare drummers(being an old drum line guy myself). Would love to know about the history/training back round of these two particular snare drummers. Looks like a mix of modern hybrid rudimental drumming with traditional military and concert training. Super clean playing especially given the rhythmic modulations! Anyways, thank you for sharing
Why are there so many ignorant and uneducated people? It is so depressing to see a lot of the remarks here. I am glad there were smart people here telling the truth here. People need to listen and also do research. People need not always assume. That is how you make a fool of yourself. This is a great video and represents our U.S. military very well. I love those old American uniforms!! God bless!!
Amazing. You gotta love a pair of spats that go all the way up. hehe Interesting to see the Drummy with a spear rather than a mace, was that common in the states? Also, 500 shows/year!?! dang.
Those fifes are sticks with holes in them. The bugles have no valves! The drummers have memories like elephants as they are EXTREMELY difficult cadences to play…and stone faced at that. Saw them once perform live and I’m still shell shocked.
The Old Guard wears what looks like a British uniform because they wore the reverse colors,of the main army which was blue with red trimmings, therefore they wears red with blue trimmings giving them that 'British' look.
What fife are they using? When I was in my High school All Girls school Drum Corps you couldn't hear us. We were drowned out by the drums and bells. The fifers can really be heard. I felt so underappreciated.

They use Bb ten holes deluxe model skip healy fifes.
Idk how I got here. I searched for We’re An American Band drum covers...so I watched expecting maybe they were going to do some Grand Funk Railroad...then they didn’t..
These drum parts are all written in house by members of the corps. You may access them by contacting the US Army's, 3rd US Infantry Regiment The Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps.
Every time I hear them play, I get the strong urge to drive to Boston so I can dump tea in the harbor.

There’s something about seeing our first uniforms playing our first songs.

Dr Joseph warren actually wrote new lyrics to the the tune of the grenadiers

There is an American version of this song called free America
I was in the Corps from 1975-1980. Great to see that they/we continue to only get better. Great performance. Nice to run into this video.
How was the bicentennial?
I have a question about them why are they red since red was the color of British uniforms during the revolution?

The uniforms are a reverse of the standard soldiers uniform. Hence the red coat and blue cuffs instead of the blue coat and the red cuffs.
