I feel like we should've had a steam engine Lego Technic set long ago already as pneumatic + valve steering + one motor driving the pump. I get reminded of this every time I see a new train set...
Thanks Johan, and thanks Sariel! This set is such a disappointment. While I do think the cars look fine, the locomotive is a bad joke. This loks like a freight or at best mixed use locomotive, one you'd only find in front of the Orient Express during shunting. Add to that poor QC on the prints, lots of stickers and that terrible base, and this went from one of my most anticipated sets to one of the biggest let-downs of the year. Some other brand that shall not be named also made an (obviously unlicensed) Orient Express set that blows this thing out of the water completely, for less than €200. And that one actually is motorized, includes an oval of track, and even has a smoke generator....
This thing reeks of development he’ll. At least the engine. Also, glad they included the classic empty spot in the tender car to allow for motorizing the train without having to use the engine (source: I motorized a train with the engine one time and it was the worst experience of my Lego building career).
23:52 thats one of the reasons why i want two of these sets. The other is, so i turn both locomotives into a 4-6-4 + make a bigger tender from that dinky little one. In case anyone is wondering, I'd use car #3 as a passenger coach and car #4 as an observation car. I just need to get the funds for one set first.
Good old RUclips censoring comments! we need a RUclips alternative. As I was trying to say, Try getting sets from eBay, or some other source that doesn’t give your money to lego. They don’t deserve money for what they’ve done to this set
1:24 "pieces with bags" xD Also, you can buy two and build a better loco out of parts from two locomotives. The downside is that you get two dining cars.
Your review is fantastic as always! Great job. However, there is something that has been bugging me. I know a ton of people have complained that the locomotive is not what they wanted and I don't want to come off as rude, but the more I hear it, the more it sounds like people are whining they didn't get the toy in the right color scenario. The original submission of the locomotive would have been impossible to work with the tracks(especially on the curbed ones). The wheels are not even on the rails. What I am trying to say is I would rather see if someone could create a locomotive that has more detail like the original submission but still be a reasonable design.
The loco could have used more detail; it’s more like one to move an empty consist rather than for mainline operations. But I bought it for the carriages. Annoyingly, my set came with the yellow backed stickers instead of gold.
It's a neat set, though the attention to the cars over the locomotive is rather disappointing. The Orient Express is after all a train, not a locomotive, so I suppose that influence makes sense. However, the majority of people who voted on the set most likely voted for it wanting to see such an impressive locomotive turned into an official set.
Unfortunately this review is way too positive. Bad quality of the prints on the Loco goes unmentioned. Some reviewers showed sets with stickers in wrong color. Bad spelling of the city names goes unmentioned. Crazy price, unmentioned...
Nice set, just not the one that the people voted for. And a disgrace that it was released with a typo in one of the cities' names, LEGO owes Romanians an apology.
Why did lego even bother mentioning the ideas entry? There isn’t one recognizable feature on the Lego version. Oh that’s right, they included a minifig that supposedly looks like the designer. What a joke!
my dumb ass is gonna buy 3 or so of these and kit bash the engines in to one monstrosity of an engine... and for the first time one of my MOC's will be colour coordinated. what the hell I don't own a car so all the money I would have spent of fuel I can burn on LEGO instead... like a civilised person
City names in a language that nobody knows, bad quality track pieces, bad prints on the locomotive, incorrect stickers, no motors or batteries and most importantly another Hogwarts Express locomotive design. Unfortunately, it's a very lazy design. But still asking for a 300 bucks, just terrible. Now we have to wait another 5-10 years to get a realistic train design or what? So sad...
City names are in language from the country of the origin. For example Beograd is in serbian, Bucaresti is in Romanian (although it should be Bucuresti), Munchen and Wien in German as it was on a Original. Now i see that "Bucaresti" is an error on lego side, because on the original it said "Bucuresti" as it's supposed to and Budapest should be after Bucuresti (although it would be weird because train first stopped in Budapest then in Bucharest).
@@oskarskalski2982 I can speak German and Turkish so I want to comment about them. ISTANBUL is not turkish, it should be İSTANBUL with "İ" and MUNCHEN is not german as well, it should be MÜNCHEN with "Ü". BUCAREŞTI is just on another level. I can't say anything about it. So, city names are not in their own language. It is impossible to understand the language connection between these. It should be new language lol.
@@bartuguney3989 Yes, you're right and I was fully aware of those differences. Maybe it's something about not being able to use special characters outside of latin alphabet. On the original train (you can find images online) there is definitely umlaut in Munchen although I couldn't see if the first charachter in Instanbul is correct. And there is definitely no special character in Bucuresti. So I would go on a limb and say that those names are written in native languages but without special characters (for whatever reason).
Big thanks to Johan! We needed a review of this set especially after all the controversy to see what it’s actually all about

@@backonpro5679 Nooooo, don't let Sariel ever see this!

7:29 - That con-rod might come in handy for more new sets!
For instance, in a simpler but practical steering mechanism!
Sariel It's your first train review?
I would like to watch more like this 💯💯

Sadly, the final product is virtually NOTHING like the original Ideas submission. Great review, as usual!
Nice review! I believe this were the best music choices I saw in one of your videos. Can you share the name of the music tracks?
The new half beam is a general use part.
I’m not even into trains, but the engine in this set looks more like Thomas the train engine rather than the one of the submission 💀
XD

Sariel you should have a go at motorizing this set
I mean, the major thing about Orient Express wasn't the locomotive, but the service in the passenger cars.
The loco could have used more detail; it’s more like one to move an empty consist rather than for mainline operations. But I bought it for the carriages.
Annoyingly, my set came with the yellow backed stickers instead of gold.
I heard somewhere that the engine was changed specifically because the orient express company requested it
Thank you Johan for giving us a review we can trust!
Always the BEST reviews. Thank you!
THANK YOU Jonathan and Thank you Sariel for taking that crap off of Jonathan's Hands !!!
By the way, my train sits right on the transparent 2x2 brick, so it doesn't move at all :)
It's no Emerald Night, and what a shame that is!
Never have gotten another Lego Train since the Emerald Knight. Lol Even if I got this one, I wouldn't have room for it anywhere. Lol
No words about the new bracket piece? O_0
All I see is Thomas the Tank Engine, or at least the more cuddly "Choo-Choo Charles". It's almost a 1-to-1 recreation.
Bruh, value 4/5? The natural history museum has 1500 pieces more, yet costs just as much as the train. IMO, the OEs value is terrible
Number of pieces per price isn't everything. I'd pick a train over a boring building every time.
@@searme I agree that the OE is the more interesting set as I collect 8w rail. But that doesn't make OEs value less terrible
1:06 wait why i thinked the lego ucs hogwarts express was bigger train than this but maybe im wrong
It was, my mistake, sorry.

Why are you not mentioning the big spelling errors in the CONS?
Well I think it's something that 2% of people will catch or care about.
Its good but Oh what could've bee
Soon you make 1K videos

I got corrected stickers and the price is way more sensible than that of the Hogwarts Express.

Bruh they misspelled "București"....
