This is why I choose to drive vehicles from the 70s.
Easy to diagnose and relatively easy to repair.

Evey person with a PC is now a parts expert. The part was probably the wrong one,but ordered that way,and works fine. Human error is what makes life human, the day is coming when human error will be obsolete, never, lol

I’m surprised the owner didn’t have the original fuel rail in the back of the vehicle. If he’s savvy enough to take on changing a fuel rail you’d think this isn’t his first rodeo and should know “if what you did made it worse, undo what you just did”

    Yup… Amazon parts strike again.
A friend asked for help with his GMC Yukon Denali with a check engine light. It was rich on both banks. The long term fuel trims were maxed out on both banks, and it also maxed out the short terms, so even at the maximum negative LTFT, it was still extremely rich.
After checking some things like the flex fuel system, throttle body, MAF readings, fuel pressure, I finally checked the injectors and noticed they were replaced. I asked where he got them and he said “Amazon.” I pulled up the same injectors he purchased… all 1 star reviews, every single one of them was; “Fits great. But now my check engine light is on and runs rough.” or something to that effect.
I told him to get the right injectors from the dealer. We installed them and suddenly the Yukon wouldn’t even stay running. With the proper injectors, the maxed out negative fuel trims couldn’t keep the engine running long enough for the computer to make adjustments haha. I had to reset the trims with the scanner.
Between that and doing every job two or three times, not because I messed up, but because of bad parts, I had enough. I had to replace a bad camshaft position sensor because the car had an intermittent circuit code. I installed the new sensor and then it was just a camshaft position circuit code. We sent it back and got a new one; the same circuit code showed up. I called up the parts store to get another one sent promptly and the kid is giving me lip, “Are you sure the sensor is the problem?” I said “I checked the wiring from the sensor to the computer before I ordered the first one. It’s perfectly fine. I also reinstalled the old sensor and the intermittent circuit code comes right back. I plug in your sensor and there’s no signal.”
Why would I have to explain myself to a cashier… if he could fix cars, he’d be doing that.
It got so bad over the past 5 years that if a car came in with a problem, and anything was recently replaced, that’s where I would direct my diagnosis. And the sad commentary is that 7/10 times, the new part was the issue. Either the DIYer or other shop had it right, but was screwed by shit parts. It happened to me too, far too many times. Eventually I said, “Fuck this. I’m going to be a plumber.” Very rarely do you get a defective part.
    No regrets.

I see this everyday on the Facebook forums I'm on for the different vehicles I own. Someone will ask about a quote they got from a repair shop, and everyone will tell them... "that quote is rediculous! You can do it yourself with a crescent wrench and this $20 wing dong part from Amazon or ebay."

I know of a 2018 Tahoe that had Amazon led headlights that caused a bunch of issues. The dash cluster went crazy, misfire and interior lights wouldn’t go off. Was in 4 different shops for 9 months. Even sent a gm guy that stayed for 3 months on it. After no one figured anything out an oil change guy came out and said change the bulbs, you’ve tried everything else. Sure enough. The dealership they bought it from offer a lifetime warranty on everything they sell. Good for customer, but man what a mess.

Ive worked on a few of these. Where the high pressure pump is leaking fuel into the oil and causing rich codes. If i had it down that far. Id replace that high pressure pump also. Check oil if its overfull. Id definitely change it.

I’m rethinking cheaping out on parts to keep my old ford ranger running after seeing stuff like this. Good advice about a least doing some research if using aftermarket stuff. I used to think you car guys had an easier career than the airline guys but we don’t have to deal with crazy customers & junk parts

    • @ScottysVise
      @ScottysVise День назад +2

Funny you say that about your ranger. I had a p0401 code (Egr code) for my 99 ranger 3.0 v6. After throwing 2 Amazon Chinese DPFE sensors at it ($20 each) the code kept coming back. Wasted a bunch of time with other parts here and there, until I finally bought the Motorcraft dpfe sensor, and the code hasn't come back in over a year. Lesson learned 😂

I have a 6.2L Ford F150 (the 16 plug deal). I bought 8 coils for $100 on Amazon and they were misfiring so bad I though the engine would fall out. Flashing CEL. Never again. Rockauto has Denso or Motorcraft for $70. Most of the OEM were good, only needed 3.

I recommend you to create a check list, your team use when you accept new vehicles. One question can be: where did you source the parts from? Check lists are great they give you guidance. IMO the customer is at fault had you known that those parts were from amazon you would've spent less time on it.
