- In this Adventures of Superman Ultimate Goofs video edition, I have put together all of my Adventures of Superman television series goofs videos together from seasons one through season six with a few updates and cuts here and there to create the ultimate goofs edition. I take a look at mistakes and interesting facts from the show on things like special effects, extras, props, plots, and bloopers that made it to the final cut. The Adventures of Superman starred George Reeves, Jack Larson, John Hamilton, Phyllis Coates, and Noel Neill.
I examine whether or not Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane missed her mark and was actually punched accidentally during one scene.
I take a look at other Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen goofs where Lois' shoes change from one scene to the other and Lois becomes an actual wedge that unbelievably holds back a wall driven by hydraulic pistons.
See mysterious shadows on what should be the sky and learn of the various effects and techniques used to make George Reeves fly like Superman.
Also, interesting episodes I look at include the one where Superman divides himself into two Supermen, he takes on a wife, travels back in time, and somehow tackles a nuclear explosion.
The fun part of looking at old TV show goofs is that by doing so you get a good idea of how special effects were done back in the early days of television and where things sometimes went wrong like the time John Hamilton got hit in the head while playing Perry White.
Also, I take a look at the times actual Superman, Superboy, and Batman comic books made it onto the Adventures of Superman.
I finish the video looking at facts of this classic TV show and a little bit of history of comic book superheroes on the small screen.

George Reeves was, is, and will always be the real Superman to me. And rest in peace, Phyllis Coates.
I'm 74 years old and I don't care how corny they are or how many bloopers there are, it's a part of my childhood and love them...
Me too. I've got all the Superman 50's episodes on DVD not to mention almost all the other Superman related shows.
Back then we didnt see "Bloopers" it was all action,,,But today we watch these old shows and laugh at how corny they were,,, But hey,,,I have watched "the day the earth stood still,,,Starman,,,,The Time machine,,,,,,and "Outer Limits dozs or times

I, too, grew up watching Superman. You’ve done an excellent job of finding and circling the obvious mistakes during filming. Someone wasn’t watching! But, we little kids were, and being mesmerized by seeing bad guys receiving their come-uppence, and Lois being gaga over Superman’s physique, my five-year-old brain didn’t notice. Too much action!😅
well, Superman had to be able to go through the window roughly 6 foot tall person and come back through the window so the window had to be a certain size. Why not use the same one so you know it works?💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
You said it exactly right. I was born in 1951 and for me, George Reeves will always be the definitive (real) Superman.
I met Jack Larson ("Jimmy Olsen") at his home in Bel Aire, CA in 1968. What a fine, gracious man he was.
When I was a little boy I never missed an episode. I'm an old mannow but I do remember how much I loved this program.
At 76 years old, this was one of my favorite programs. I was so die-hard Superman that the bloopers never really stopped me from enjoying them. I could see that the walls and mountains he burst through were fake, or that the guns were made of plastic. It was all ok with me. Thanks for sharing.
I didn't even think about any bloopers when I was 4 years old watching these shows ..I was just loving it..
Most 4 year olds do not have the critical thinking abilities of adults.

George Reeves was such a classy actor. He affected me as a child like a father figure would. There was nothing else like him anywhere.
I am 74 and never missed an episode of Superman. The difference in my memory is my buddies and I caught all of the bloopers. We try to explain them or just laughed. We were smart enough to realize Superman' was a character.
George Reeves was MAGNIFICENT!

Having grown up during those times and watching that show, you have to keep in mind that at that time that was state of the art technology and no one was looking at details like that, especially kids. Also, everything was in black-and-white.

One thing I'll say about the 50s Superman - the guy that played Jimmy Olsen really nailed the role. Best Jimmy Olsen portrayal in any Superman incarnation ever (in my opinion).

As someone old enough to have watched these episodes in the 50's , let me say that with the quality of T.V. reception at that time most of these " goofs " would not have been noticeable . Although I do remember some of them .

TV was so new and fascinating back then we weren’t conscious of goofs.
Superman will always be a classic show, and it never gets old.
I grew up on this TV show for all its flaws it was still great.
The reason he ducked was because that was a real gun that it just shot blank rounds, the other guns were plastic and could easily bounce off your chest without damage or hurting
Great video! I grew up with George Reeves' Superman. He was and still is my Superman on TV. Then came along Chris Reeve in 1978 on the movie screen. I like them both equally. Like 1a and 1b. I'm thinking George and Chris are exchanging stories on their own adventures as Superman.

I think the biggest goof of all on The Adventures Of Superman...was the realization that the Daily Planet had Perry White....the editor....and Clark Kent, Lois Lane..and Jimmy Olsen, as the only staff on the newspaper! You never saw any other employess at the Planet, but those four! Operating a "great metropolitan newspaper" with just four employees...was a "super" feat ..in and of itself! As I became older....I realized that when Kellogg's took the show over...and "dumbed" it down to make it more "family friendly"..the plots did get more sappier and illogical. Of course, as kids..we were too busy watching Superman snap up the bad guys...to notice the flubs and tackiness of the "special" effects! Still...the black & white episodes were more adult and action packed. George Reeves was what made it work...and he infused his portrayal of Superman in a very memorable way...and I think it was his personality that captivated boys (and girls).....as the Man Of Steel. Goofs and flubs notwithstanding...It will always be a series that is close to my heart. RIP Mr. Reeves!

That whole thing about Lous, Jimmy and Perry White not recognizing Superman when he was being Clark Kent Without Glasses on had me scratching my head too until years later when I saw a lecture by a C.I.A. disguise expert who said people don't always remember a Face but mentally use a recognition of a person by their actions and clothes they regularly wear. The lecturer recounted how 1 agent was able to switch articles of clothing and not be recognized by people that were paid to be on the lookout for him (or her). It is a concept that is used in a lot of Spy movies and even action movies these days.

I uae to watch superman everyday after school. I loved it.
First of all, I liked this collection of classic goofs from the Superman series. I don't know if you caught this goof in one of your past collections, but I do remember this one from the Superman episode Shot in the Dark. Jimmy Olsen is chased by a couple of bad guys and runs down the steps to a subway station and escapes on a train marked Valley Local. The bad guys slugged the operator of the next train marked Valley Express. The express train is supposed to catch up to the local and crash into it. Though they use the side of an IRT door as a prop, the actual film footage is R-1/ R-9 trains on New York's Independent Subway system. When Superman crashes through the tunnel to stop the accident, the third rail is several feet above the track! The third rail is closer to the running rails and near the wheel sets (aka the trucks). Superman picks up the third rail, breaks it up so the express train can't catch up to the local. They use animated special effects to simulate electricity that's going through Superman as he lifts up the power rail to break it. On my first subway ride in New York in the summer of 1965, I saw the third rail was closer to the running rails than the fake third rail in the episode. The real third rail has a wooden board above it so maintenance people can step on that and not get electrocuted. Moreover, the tunnel lighting was much brighter than the actual subway footage in the film clips.
Never seen this before!! Never even heard about this Superman movie!!! Look like very interesting!!!!

At 78, I can call myself an old fart. I grew up on Action Commics, Adventure Comics both featuring Superman, and the Superman TV show with George Reeves and first Phyllis Coates and then Noel Neill as Lois Lane. I also read Superboy comics. When I entered the Army, Mom and Dad threw out my old comic books. They woulda been worth a fortune today, but they didn't know it then.
Man, I can't believe people threw away comics so often back then. I actually got started reading comics by pulling out comics my grandma threw away.
People were dumb back then!
The Adventures of Superman tv series 1950's style is cool,fun and entertaining.
As child, I used to dream I could fly using swim strokes to get up about 40 feet in the air. I thoroughly enjoyed Superman as a child. I was more interested in the action than the goofs.
I still have dreams where I'm flying all the time 😀
Everytime Clark removes his glasses he is next to Lois. And Lois never sees how Clark without glasses looks like Superman.
The Reeve movies and Superman Returns did a good job of this. It wasn't just the glasses, it was his nerdy clothes hair, and mannerisms. Mannerisms, voice inflection and personality make a huge impact on how others interpret you.

23:40 George Reeves is "Gone With the Wind." Yes, let's not forget he's in the very first scene with Scarlett O'Hara. No superpowers though, he gets killed at Gettysburg.
The Adventures Of Superman with George Reeves was the very first tv show that I can ever remember watching back then!

👍🏻 great video mate. Superman's wife Joi lansing was absolutely gorgeous...but I feel by time the filmed in colour, they became lazy with the stories and effects, like no one wanted to be there. It's the impression I get from watching them. The first 2-3 seasons are my favourite and the best, in my opinion. Superman is great no matter what🦸🏻..p.s Superman has laundry powers😅 it's why he can clean himself off..cheers from England

For each episode, they always filmed Reeves' Superman flying scenes last, so he had to stay late strung up on wires. Noel Neill and Jack Larson, who play Lois and Jimmy, would always make sure to taunt Reeves about this as they left to go out for the evening while he was hung up, very uncomfortable, held up late for this.
One season the actors were each offered the chance to direct one episode. For his, Reeves commissioned a script in which Lois and Jimmy got superpowers, including the ability to fly. See where this is going?
Yep. He kept them strung up for hours on those wires filming the flying scenes, insisting on take after take, to be sure it was the perfect shot.
Taunting Superman can never be a good idea.
John and Mary Kent were the adoptive parents of the original (Earth-2) Superman. The Earth-1Superman's (the one we're most familiar with) adoptive parents were Jonathan and Martha Kent.
Just a little FYI for future consideration: At the 13:40 mark, you show the outside of a police station. That is actually the oldest continuous police station in Los Angeles. It was built in 1926 on York Blvd. in Highland Park. It finally closed down in 1983 and now serves as a Police Museum for the Los Angeles Police Department.

I grew up in Melbourne Australia watching Superman at the Rivoli picture theatre or reading endless comics and Superman Jimmy Olsen , The Chief and Loise Lane were great favourites. No TV until 1955 and I was born in 1939. p.s. Unlike the Brits who got TV in the late 1930s courtesy of John Logie Baird a Scotsman I think.

15:51 I also just noticed that theres no springboard for Superman in this scene to give him that extra edge. I think the jump was pretty impressive considering he was already in his late 30s !! I still remember back then, on the walk to school, arguing with my friends about how Superman had died. The weird thing about it was it was kind of like the 'Santa Claus' argument as my friends and I watched this show religiously and thought Superman/Kent were REAL. So part of the argument was 'How did Superman die from a gunshot wound of all things ? I mean, we all knew that bullets bounced off Superman and it took Kryptonite to kill him !! Man, those were the days !! What put the final nail in the coffin for me was when my parents dragged me and my siblings to see 'From Here To Eternity' at the drive ins. "Look dad, Sgt Stark is Superm.... oh." :-)
I'm just reading the post below mine from @254967conwell: I'm the same age (dob-1948) and have the same thoughts about that program. Thank you for summing up, in simple and poignant terms, your experience watching Superman. If I remember correctly, I used to watch it in the afternoons from time to time around 4:00 p.m. back in Columbus, Ohio. I loved it and loved the fact that Superman could be invincible and have bullets fly off his chest! Cool, indeed! (11/15/23--Rohnert Park, CA)
I watched his program religiously when I was a kid. My favorite scene was, when on a ship, a criminal took a swing at Superman, and Superman ducked, the criminal struck the wall of the ship, crumpling in pain.

Again! This is a children’s show. Superman, in a child’s eyes, 👀 can do anything! From levitating Lois Lane to hold back a moving wall, to turning around a nuclear 💥 explosion, and Superman is known everywhere in the world. 🌍 thanks 🚩
In the first episode Superman on Earth, actor Dabbs Greer mentions that a superguy in a red and blue costume catches him. A little fact note for those who didn’t know : Superman's costume in all the B&W episodes were brown and gray, not red and blue until the shows were shown in color.

For the black & white episodes of Adventures Of Superman....the producers created the costume in burgundy and gray. Why? Because those colors made the costume appear better on black & white TV sets. When the series began filming AOS in color...the costume's colors were the actual red,blue and yellow used in the comic books. Of course...viewers who watched it on B&W sets saw the costume as a dark gray and black suit, which was ugly on those sets. Color TV was very expensive for families, and because most programs were not filmed in color in the mid '50's anyway...none of us kids watching AOS didn't mind!

The George Reeves era premiered here in Australia back in the 60s and i would race home if possible from Primary School to try and watch it. School finished at 3.45pm and it came on Tv at 4.00pm by the time i got in the house i would often have missed 10-15minutes unfortunately.
I was born in 1965. Thanks to a TV channel in Memphis, TN I saw this version of Superman in re runs every Sunday in the mid 70s.
I loved superman when i was a kid i still enjoy watching it. But the glasses make him look different always was a little odd

The first 2 seasons were great serious tough and gritty after that things got a little silly But as a kid I loved George's Superman
I still find it funny that Superman stands still when being shot at and bullets bounce off of him, but he ducks when someone throws a gun at him.

You're forgetting that this is the first five years of Television. Viewers were used to radio & stage performances, where they (willingly) ignored props and low tech effects, especially in fantasy type stories. In fact, I suspect there was a conscious choice to keep in certain pieces of evidence that this was all created in a studio. You actually wouldn't have wanted people in this era to be too convinced, or else they might be a little scared to watch the series- or more importantly... be weary of letting their children watch such a realistic fantasy. This was 50s TV., you just can't view it with a modern perspective.
Ma and Pa Kent’s first names being Sarah and Eben in “Superman on Earth” probably came from the 1942 novel “The Adventures of Superman” by George Lowther, which used these names.
At 28:41 I think that's actually some kind of microphone as there's also a black wire attached to the bottom. These flying scenes appear to have been filmed sideways and George Reeves is actually just standing upright and the camera's sideways position makes it look like he's flying with all the wind and smoke blown at him.
I remember the Superman TV show, I'm 65 years old now and I was five years old when I first seen Superman watching it on our black-and-white TV, didn't get colour TV till about 1969, it brings back fond memories and I appreciate your commentary, unfortunately I didn't get to see the very beginning of it cuz I wasn't born yet, but one thing's for sure watching Superman reruns that were black and white on a colour TV, unfortunately there's still black and white on a colour TV😢🤓😂
For over 60 years I've wondered why Superman ducked when the crook threw his gun at him, or at least why the actor and director decided to play it that way. Perhaps, since it was the stunt man, he was more focused on not getting hurt.😊

I've been a loyal ROCKFORD FILES fan for over 40 years. I've caught so many goofs on those shows but still watch it!
Angel is the best recurring character in any television show EVER. My dad and I would watch the show together and we'd both get so excited whenever Angel showed up.

I've said before regarding the Mind Machine episode: The reason Superman ducks (rather his stunt double): The gun was firing blanks, but it was a real metal gun, not a rubber fake one. Since there were no cuts in the shot it meant that a real metal gun was thrown at the stunt man. Therefore he could not let it bounce off his chest! Hence he ducks!

Having seen 10 little Indians in a day play High School, ultimately, I loved growing up seeing the stage play format aspect of, The Adventures of Superman, advantages!
I was too young to notice any of the gaffes you've highlighted but, boy!, were there ever a lot of them! And serious ones too!
I saw as a kid I wouldn't have noticed the goofs either, but I clearly remember the wires.
George Reeves could not be replaced to all us kids. He WAS Superman. Just like the Lone Ranger and Tonto. Any other actor would be the fake one.
I wish they would have done just one meeting with Superman and the Lone Ranger It would have been something people still talked about today.

I have to agree that Clark taking off his glasses and nobody recognizing Superman had to be written in as an ongoing gag. In the earlier shows, at least his hair and facial expressions were different as Clark Kent. In the later episodes, they didn't even bother to change those as Clark Kent grew from "mild-mannered" to a more of a leader persona.

In a narrated edition of Terror in the Sky, both Jack Larson and Noel Neil both stated the reason they did not recognize Clark Kent as Superman was "We wanted to keep our jobs".
I too am not recognized (even by my wife) when I take my glasses off.

And, Batman was a "crime fighter".
The actual first "series" of superhero was Batman that ran in theaters back in 1943. Great series, definitely corny, but none-the-less enjoyable. Loved their version of the Batmobile, a 1939 Cadillac😆😆😆. I always thought they were the forerunners who brought forth the Marvel/DC comics to both the big screen and small screen. Marvel and DC claim that they started the "comic book" serials and made them popular, but all these oldies were the ones who made the current movies do so well. If it weren't for us "old timers", DC and Marvel would not have been possible. Moms and Dads (some cases Grandma and Grandpa) bought the original comic books and saw the original releases of these heroes and then passed the comics books and serials stories to the next generations.

the 2nd Lois Lane was more attractive. The one mistake the series made is - failing to integrate the UFO scene of the 1950s in the Superman series. Even the Flinstones cartoon covered the UFO situation; they had a character called "Kazoo" who was a UFO guy, an alien.
After George rolls out of the car, survives the bomb blast, gets the overcoat from Noel and climbs back up to the car, you can ACTUALLY SEE THE FILM CREW IN THE HIGHLY POLISHED SIDE OF THE CAR!

I think it was very brave of them to film some of the seasons in color since few owned a color tv set and many stations didn't even broadcast in color.
They saw the future of syndication..
They were definitely thinking ahead.
@@tvcrazyman the episodes were shot in color, but prints struck for those episodes when they originally aired were in monochrome, a form of black and white. It would not be until the 1960s that color prints were made of those shows.
