  • Task for testing different types of 1/8 milling bits
Material 8 mm. recycled plastic. The purpose is to find the type of bits that do all the tasks best, but also to find out which tasks the different types of bits are best for.
    The setup In Easel
    Feed rate 762 mm/min
    Plunge rate 228.6 mm/min
    Depth Per pass 0.5 mm
    Spindle Speed (RPM)
The test can be used with all types of bits and materials but must be adapted with tests with different setups.

The CNC theory for plastics is lower spindle speed, faster feed rate as you need to create plastic chips rather than melt plastic chunks. Single flute spiral upcut

The settings I use in the video are not optimal, but they are the ones I start with when trying new bits or materials such as bone, horn and the type of plastic I use and cannot find a useful guide. I use the same setting every time, so it's easier to compare and see in which direction I can find the best settings.

A simple grinder and 1/8" HSS tool rods would make for cheap easy to sharpen bits. Harder to break than carbide. Touch up with diamond stone. Going to have to get some of these services n the meantime, bits are expensive.

Thanks, but no, the sight won't improve, so now I just have to learn to do things differently. There are many ideas I would like to test and share, so there will probably be some videos in the spring when I can use the workshop again.

Interested that your circle clearance toolpath was a climb cut (spindle anticlockwise movement) rather than conventional cutting the face clockwise!

It was by chance that I tried the Dremel bit, I didn't think that type would be suitable for plastic but I needed a long bit for a deep pocket hole and it did it very well but for general cuts it is useless. Sometimes you are surprised, I also did not expect that it was a cheap half-straight bit that did the job best.

@@Harris-DIY 15 years ago I used Wood router bits on Delrin and PVC. Have yet to try on my new 3018

Thank you for asking, I have lost part of my sight over a long period of time and have now had an operation. The sight is now stable and improved but unfortunately I can no longer see very small things (read measuring instruments and the like) I hope to come back but things require some getting used to and new solutions.
