I trace all the time when I feel like just painting. It saves time. I am completely capable of drawing but it just takes longer. That said when I do hand draw first, I tend to prefer my paintings that were hand sketched as they have a looser "arty" feel to them.
Ooo I like that benefit of hand drawing - a loose not so photorealistic look is so nice. I tend to try to make that happen during the painting process by incorporating lines, not erasing pencil marks, and keeping the body of my subjects blurry/abstracty, but I can see how drawing by hand would accomplish this as well.
