Wow, that is tough! I have lost both parents, both grandmothers and uncle over the last 4 years. I could never understand his grief but I share it.

    I feel you.
I am in middle management and lost my wife at the age of 42. For 1,5 years, my three daughters (13,11,3 at the time) and I watched her die, due to cancer.
It wasn't easy to work full-time and keep the family sane.
But, in the end, we grow with our challanges.

Grief never leaves. It does heal over time but leaves a scar that never fades. I think of those who I’ve lost every day even years later. That I’ll never see them again is the hardest thing.

Overcoming grief is not easy. Grief consumes a part of yourself and you are not the same person anymore.

Loss comes in many shapes. Each of us handles loss differently. Totally agree with his ideas. I would also add that companies should give some "protection" to employees dealing with loss in terms of performance reviews. Despite the tremendous loss he was dealt with. It sounds like he recovered well. I know multiple people that went through divorces and their performance dropped due to all that they were dealing with. They were let going during downsizing. I'm confident, given time and therapy, they could be top performers again.

Grief is like the roommate you never wanted and, unfortunately, you must live with for the rest of your life.

If you can't think of something to say, just offer eye contact, a squeeze of the hand, or a reassuring hug. Offer your support. Ask what you can do for the grieving person. Offer to help with a specific task, such as helping with funeral arrangements, or just be there to hang out with or as a shoulder to cry on.

If this isnt a scathing indictment of capitalism I don't know what is. Imagine he wasn't some executive who is most likely not alienated from his work but a waiter or some other service employee.

More an indictment of time contracts, that allow companies to fire employees for health reasons...

    • @petthepizza
      @petthepizza 3 года назад

@@TheSassi14 Why do you think that is exactly lol. Capitalism incentivizes companies to value profit over its employees, so they fire a sick worker to hire a healthy worker.

I've gotten the dog dying bit too. You don't feel mad at them because you know they're trying... But at the same time it's like they want you to focus on their pain instead of hearing out yours... And you're just so exhausted with grief you don't have what they want to give.

I had 3 miscarriages and had to have as funeral for one , my unborn daughter. I work a full time professional job but it's a small staff. I had to go to work the day after the funeral for my 2nd loss and I had to go to work still bleeding, after my 3rd miscarriage because there was a committee meeting I had to attend.

Getting support for grievances at work is just as easy as taking a comp day. Just make sure you still meet your deadlines which assume you work 60 hours a week, always.

People not in HR have to work with, for, or manage employees that might be dealing with tremendous loss. Loss comes from death of loved ones, divorce, etc.. Not everybody understands how to deal with somebody going through these things or how to treat them. Some people lack empathy or tact.

Considering the term loss the world has suffered: 400,000 dead in the US alone from covid in just under a year, loss of job, political unrest, home, sense of security, simple resources, ability to spend time with those people we're used to seeing on a daily basis, etc. All of these thing's have been incredibly traumatic, depending on where you live and how many factors have affected your household thus far. I can tell you personally that the nation has not seen the full spectrum of the effects of the pandemic, it's devastation on every level will leave marks on society for years to come, from a sociological, psychological, economical, political, long term health and wellness, and so on. EMPATHY, is one trait that everyone can use a little more of and improve their emotional intelligence skills, to ease the pain and suffering of those around you, and guide you through your own life experiences when hard times show up at your doorstep unexpectedly. Kindness goes a long way, just one random act can make a huge impact!
I commend TED Talks for continuing to offer virtual speakers from around the globe, even during the pandemic, with a variety of topics available nearly every day!
