At this point, working from a home office is a fact of life for many Canadians. With the sudden pivot to working from home, many WFH-ers never had the opportunity to create a workspace that’s both appealing and functional.
The first thing to consider is always the person (or people) using the home office. Every design choice that follows should focus on the people who will be spending 40 hours a week in the space.
So with that in mind, decide on a basic aesthetic and choose a colour scheme. Whether you want a minimalist design with lots of wood grains and muted colours, or a kitschy setup with a wide assortment of furniture and colours, it’s important to decide before you start buying anything new.
Often, you’ll be starting with some of the furniture already on hand. That helps make things more straightforward, as you’ve got a starting point for your home office design choices.
One thing that’s often an issue with home office setups is cable management; there’s nothing less aesthetically appealing than a rat’s nest of tangled cords. Make sure your design choices include a way to organize (or hide) power and data cables as necessary.
Finally, with furniture (including a great office chair) decided, you can add some finishing touches. Live plants are a terrific addition to almost any work-from-home space. You should also find artwork that matches your overall design. If you don’t have any wall art to work with, there’s nothing wrong with finding some free designs online and printing them out. Along with some second-hand frames, you can cover your walls without spending too much money.
