Denise, I am legally blind. I would pay to listen to you read books. You have a lovely voice and I would have a different comfort level with a voice that is familiar to me. If you could use any advice/info for your dad as he goes forward with visual impairment, I would be honoured to assist you. Life doesn’t stop, it’s different. ❤

Happy New Year Denise! It is always your enthusiasm for all you do that gets me every time! At age 70 I always feel like I’m in a race against time. I’d like to change that thinking and just appreciate and make best use of the time I do have. I was challenged about this twice this weekend. On Saturday a young person at my fiber group told me I was not too old to learn to spin and that if I started now at eighty I’d be an experienced spinner. Then on Sunday at church I spoke to a man from Argentina about wishing I’d learned Spanish when I lived for a year in Chile as a child. He told me I should start now. When I said but I’m seventy, he said his mom is 73 and she decided since he married an American and she got to visit the States she is determined to learn English! Wow, there's an inspiration. I think God is telling me to pursue my interests and never mind the time or age factors! So here's to learning new things in 2024! ( sorry for the wordiness here 😊)

I loved your story about teaching. I was a high school teacher and taught a short-course in knitting and crochet during a fun electives week. The kids were charmingly awkward and pretty interested, and one girl became addicted and made scarves all school year long. Good memories for me!

Your words about your dad really touched me. Both of my parents were registered blind. My dad couldn't see anything and my mum had very little vision at all. She taught me to knit and sew.
My dad used to go to work, with his guide dog, he was a lathe operator and made airplane parts for a firm called Grunfos in the North east of England. Then one day on the way home his leg fell into a pit of wet cement and he had to retire. The people who filled the hole, simply didn't realise that not everyone can see the wet cement sign.
Both of my parents died early and unexpectedly. They taught me a lot though.
It's great news about you teaching knitting and crochet in your kids school. It's a shame that you don't have any boys yet, hopefully in time that will change, also non binary kids too! 😁
My intentions this year are to focus more on Colourwork projects and get some work on my bigger projects done. So far I have made a colourwork cowl, but it's a start. I love your rainbow socks. I think that will be my advent for this year, if I can grab one! 😂

I love the way you teach - so easy to understand and your kindness to fellow bloggers, your passion for sharing things with us makes me smile. 🌞 My 1st project this year is fingerless mittens with beads for my nice and then couple of sckrappy socks( thanks to your teaching 🧡) for my chilhod friends 🧶

I absolutely love to teach knitting (and crochet), too! After I retired from my job as a middle school teacher, I taught classes for a couple of years at a LYS, which I loved. Even more fun than that, though, was teaching after school classes at my middle school. I taught both staff members and students (my favorite, to be honest). I must say, though, that the most fun I ever had teaching knitting was one year when I taught the students in my slower-paced math class to knit. Loads of math, of course! They each ended up completing a knitted square, which we then sewed together and donated to charity. It was phenomenal! Wishing you well with the young ones-- it doesn't get any better! 🧶💖

As for goals, the first (and most important) one is to be present and enjoy life. In the past 3 months I've had 3 funerals and it was all a reminder that you need to enjoy life while you can.
As for a knitting goal, I've only truly started knitting next year. My main goal is learning new techniques. I just bought yarn to make my first ever sweater (with short rows which I've never done either) and to allow myself to make mistakes and not get upset over them x

Denise you are such an inspiration, I love how you think and you just the words I need to make me remember my why, we all go through moments of thinking why is the point but for me the point is we do what we do for a reason and it’s meant to be and sometimes it’s make us think of the rewards this life can’t give by showing kindness, love and compassion and understanding to others near and far. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Congratulations with your teaching at the school ❤❤❤

When I was very little, my mom taught me to hand sew with thread and newspaper because I could break the newspaper away and not waste the thread. Wonderful episode! As a librarian, i encorage people to check out their public library. We offer audio books via online apps such as Libby and Hoopla. We also have info for the visually impaired through the state. They will provide the equipment as well as titles. Id like to recommend, Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery. She is a jounalist who writes non-fiction. Youd love that. You mightve also heard of a documentary called My Octopus Teacher. Also so good! Goal for 2024, knit my first pair of socks😊

Have fun with the kids classes. I taught crochet to a small group of 8 in the spring of 2023. About half way through, their skills improved so much that the class was becoming a chat session.
Knitting + listening to you is one of my favorite things.

I have a great grandson who has shown interest in knitting as a preschooler. we tried and made scarfs for his stuffed animals. Now that he is 7 and has more mature eye-hand coordination I’d like to be prepared to help him develop further. It would be helpful to have links to the tutorials you are recommending to your students. Love your enthusiasm and caring.

That's wonderful!!!! So far I've only shared crochet tutorials. I just did a quick search here on RUclips and there is quite a bit to choose from. You should have a look, Knitting tutorials for children, and see what you think would best serve your grandson.

I just finished the “Wool” series also and put “Remarkably Bright Creatures” on hold at my library. It sounds amazing! I look forward to your next podcast….Marsheila (from Portland, Oregon)

Hi Denise, beautiful work. I always wear holes into my handknit wool socks. It happens so much that I stopped knitting them. I send my own wool to get milled so it makes me sad that I can't make socks from my fiber animals.

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  7 месяцев назад

Hi there!!! You most certainly can make socks from your fiber animals. 100% wool socks to tend to wear out a bit quick but there are some things you can.
      1. Add a nylon thread as you knit
      2. Use a textured pattern on the bottom (or where ever you get the most wear and tear) of your sock. The denser the fabric the longer it takes to wear out. Slipped stitches are perfect for this job!!
      3. Knit your socks at a tighter gauge. Again the denser the fabric...
Yes you will. need more stitches but your socks will last a lot longer.
Hope some of these suggestions are helpful!!!
      Happy Sock Knitting!!

Loved your podcast! I think you would make an exceptional narrator ~ a new side career for you!!
Your book sounds like the movie ‘My Octopus Teacher’. It was out a couple years ago & won an Academy Award. If was very touching.
Adding my opinion ~ I think you are wonderful teacher! Making a special class for boys may work ~ pick a project that they may like to complete. Just gear it differently. Then a follow up class would or could be co-ed.
Reading for your Dad will be rewarding for you. My mom just passed away, and in the last year she had a hard time seeing, hearing and couldn’t remember how to knit anymore. We would sit and ‘watch’ TV with the sound way up. I’d knit things for her that she’d wanted to make as gifts and it was time well spent.

I taught knitting for a brief time at a craft store, but it would have been better if they were free lessons - I would have liked it better, and it might have brought more folks to the table. Kudos to the universe working a blessing between you and the school. Those kids will never forget this experience.

This is my first time teaching a class for children and I was kind of winging it and learning as I went along. I'll be starting my second round of classes soon and have a much better idea of what works and what doesn't. I think having a rough outline and letting the kids lead with what they want to learn, what time allows for and their experience level have really helped the classes take shape.
There may be actual course outlines out there regarding teaching children, it is definitely worth researching.

That is what I know is missing in the USA school system. There should be a making sessions, knitting, crocheting and sewing and home economics lessons build in with the curriculum. And not gender biased, all should be taught. Not boys do woodwork and girls do sewing, both should take what they are curious about.
