Just happened upon your YT channel a couple days ago and appreciate all the work you put into the video's and transcriptions. Have you seen the Bill Evans documentary "Time Remembered"?
I haven't seen that documentary, but I had the fortune of playing in a quartet as an opening act for the Bill Evan's Trio in Hartford years ago. I had met him a couple times before , and we talked briefly w/ him and Mark Johnson that night. He was my biggest influence. Thanks for the tip, Bob!
Love this piece! Sounds very much like Bill Evans. I have been working in learning Evans for a few years and really appreciate your putting this up Ken.
Well if you have the Bill Evans transcription book, you can learn to play this just I did...but I added a few things of my own. Thanks for the comment!
Wonderful. I've been using your videos to learn to play piano properly, and I must thank you for teaching others how to play this beautiful piece, sharing the passion that comes with it.
Beautiful rendition of this timeless masterpiece. Thanks so much Kent for featuring Bill Evans, I can't get enough of your and his music. As a side note, I watched Bruce Spiegel's wonderful documentary "Bill Evans - Time Remembered" last night, it had a touching interview with Debby Evans. Maybe you'd consider "Peace Piece" for a future video tutorial? Thanks a million Kent:)
Thanks, Colm, someone has told me about that video, so I hope to be able to watch it sometime. I was there. I saw Bill Evans live at the Vanguard in NYC in '62 when I was a teenager. I guess I had a great privilege, ....and I'm grateful.
Just woke up on Fathers Day and went straight to your channel. I love your rendition of Waltz for Debby. Thanks so much for all your work. Your book and videos are amazing
I've watched a good amount of your videos and I was wondering what you thought about learning through real books vs learning by ear. Seems to be a pretty big discussion in the jazz community, some people swear by recordings only and pressure others who use real books to drop them entirely. Perhaps it's based on skill level? It's easier for someone who's advanced to stop using their real book vs someone who is intermediate. Any thoughts?
Great question! Everyone's different. Some people are gifted with perfect pitch or great ears. They learn faster that way and it's easier for them. Others learn faster using books and intellect, and conceptual thinking to work ideas out. Personally, I use both...I can't say I'm stronger one way or the other, however the more you pursue one arena, the better you will get at developing your skill specifically that way: ear training vs. intellect. I will say that listening to recordings and being able to imitate is really important.
I like it very much, this piece is the first piece of jazz I have learned only the score just like you, but I'm not sure how can I make my solo, I will like to know how to do it, to play in trio just like bill evan's trio. Thanks
Happy Fathers Day.. Kent the father of these authentic videos. Techniques and explanations with such performance. I love your videos. I am in The States for a while .and I would like to buy your book, not sure what is more convenient., the hard copy or the pdf format....I love books but they be be heavy on the plane...
