You never played the straight white key only (for beginners) progression 1-4-3-6-2-5-1 with a white key only solo that you demoed and said you would play. Instead you went and did what everyone does, you marketed your book. Jamey Aebersold has books with music, and they are the standard. It's clear that you are an excellent musician, but you failed at the "Holy Grail" of teaching jazz to beginner's? (To show them how to sound like a jazz musician on the white keys only. The 1-4-3-6-2-5-1 played straight with no inversions is what beginner's want to learn in one weekend because they can play it! No beginner wants to start by learning 1500 chords. This is why jazz is not popular anymore with most young players. The teacher's want to showoff their skills. (MAKE A VIDEO WITH THE 1-4-3-6-2-5-1 straight no inversions, and solo with the white keys only, then show the two note left hand minimal chord and solo with the white keys using your right hand.) Then show them the 2-5-1 part alone, and finally the 2-5. Play everything straight no inversions. If you can make it sound jazzy great! Obviously you can then go into an explanation of the Modes and how to play them straight too. A beginner can do it quickly. If you can teach jazz piano to a beginner in one video you'll be a hero, and everyone will reward you with buying your book; you won't have to ask them to buy it. The best way to sell your book is to do someone a favor, and then they'll want to return it.

Hi Mark, as a jazz beginner, I completely understand what you're talking about not to emphasize the demos but only play simple things that beginners can understand and reproduce. But after watching plenty of piano jazz tutorials, I find Kent's ones the best to understand step by step. It's not easy to match everyone needs and levels but I thank people like Kent whos are giving us all these lessons for free with so much passion. Maybe it's a bit short, but I can reproduce it and once done, I want to understand the next step.
This is a fantastic introduction to jazz piano. I am 60 years old, have been playing the piano for pleasure since a child and have learnt way more from this than I expected. In fact I feel a new lease of life coming on.

The only thing that would have made this video better, is if we would have had RUclips when I was 16, and I would have known which book to get and what to learn and practice. Instead I learned classical and always wanted to play jazz. Now I'm older and feel like I'm just starting on my journey. For me, these are perfectly paced and layed out. This makes so much more sense than doing something that a teacher tells you with no understanding. What you're left with is all kinds or manners of disparate skills that are practically useless! I especially like the simplified version where you keep adding an additional note harmonically. I suspect that there are hundreds of songs that are based on the same or similar progressions that if understood from a chord scale perspective would automatically simplify learning and make playing more accessible. I am convinced that many teachers either don't know themselves or they want to keep you in a fog.

Thanks! I'm a piano teacher & have any easy time playing jazz but lately have been asked by a student to teach him how to play jazz from the beginning. I was in school in the late '70's-'80's, & who knows where my school stuff is, so I'm happy to have found these videos. It reminds me of what I learned so long ago! Just love your chord explanations. I have never found a piano teacher who instructs on chord relationships and the theory behind it all. That is one of my favorite songs being played on a radio program in LA when I flew night trips from LA to NY as a flight attendant back in my hay day. I am just trying to learn to play cocktail music without sheet music and all by ear coordinating base chords with melody. Hard to find an instructor with those teaching talents. This is such a great help for me. Even though I am taking lessons, every other week since I live so far. Your explanations work so well for me. I am slower than most, but unfortunately don't have a lot of patience. So I tend to want to play fast instead of going slowly first. I especially liked the 2 note left hand Shells. It's a great intro to lots of tunes until You master the 7 chords. I love my teacher, and I really enjoy your tutorials as well. With my teacher I have 1hour plus a few times a month. With your tutorials I can play them slower, over and over while practicing on the piano.

I love this song. I've heard a few quartets and quintets play this as part of a London jazz gig including trumpeter Dick Pearce and others who've brought this lovely tune to us masses and its simple tune belies some complicated chords perhaps. To learn this tune alone will make investing completely in Kent Hewitt's book worthwhile for me. I shall be buying the downloaded version for fifty dollars which makes it around thirty eight English Pounds - those Christmas presents will have to wait :) Although I'm tempted to try to play the easier chords, I want to learn thoroughly and follow the comprehensive chord progressions shown. I thought I was doing well all those years ago when I was mastering the circle of fifths for my sax and clarinet but piano playing at this level is something I never realised I actually could perhaps not only want to do but perhaps could do to a competent level. So I'm happy to be one of your devoted followers Kent! By the way my cat is named Snowy on account of she's white and shouldn't go out in the sun too much - a bit like us jazz lovers!

I started learning the types of 7th chords 3 weeks ago and i know them all now in 12 keys. I gotta practice on the 2-5-1s & their inversions. Thanks alot for your help 👍🏾🎹🎶
So to recap: We have seven important chords to learn: Maj7 - min7 - 7 - min7b5 (or half dim) - min7bb7 (or full dim) - sus4 - sus2 Each has root and 3 inversions = 4 chord variations So, 7 chords x 4 = 28 variations multiplied by x 12 keys = total of 336 chord variation Oh boy !! this is a lot of work :))
You'll find answers to questions by going to my playlists and choosing a category. I'd stay w/ the Beginner Series to start. I don't think you have to learn all the chords and inversions in every key before getting into playing songs using the chords in a few easy keys like C, F, G, Bb, Eb to start. Great follow-up to the first part with focus on the various 7ths. As a beginner it's super helpful to have the simplified version and commentary on how to approach the song and build up to the more complex voicing. Also the comments about which notes to remove was very interesting. Maybe that's good fodder for another video!?

This makes so much more sense than doing something that a teacher tells you with no understanding. What you're left with is all kinds or manners of disparate skills that are practically useless! I especially like the simplified version where you keep adding an additional note harmonically. I suspect that there are hundreds of songs that are based on the same or similar progressions that if understood from a chord scale perspective would automatically simplify learning and make playing more accessible. I am convinced that many teachers either don't know themselves or they want to keep you in a fog.

I was in school in the late '70's-'80's, & who knows where my school stuff is, so I'm happy to have found these videos. It reminds me of what I learned so long ago! Just love your chord explanations. I have never found a piano teacher who instructs on chord relationships and the theory behind it all. That is one of my favorite songs being played on a radio program in LA when I flew night trips from LA to NY as a flight attendant back in my hay day. I am just trying to learn to play cocktail music without sheet music and all by ear coordinating base chords with melody. Hard to find an instructor with those teaching talents. Your RUclips seem to do just that.

This is such a great help for me. Even though I am taking lessons, every other week since I live so far.
Your explanations work so well for me. I am slower than most, but unfortunately don't have a lot of patience.
So I tend to want to play fast instead of going slowly first. I especially liked the 2 note left hand Shells. It's a great intro to lots of tunes until You master the 7 chords. I love my teacher, and I really enjoy your tutorials as well. With my teacher I have 1hour plus a few times a month. With your tutorials I can play them slower, over and over while practicing on the piano.

I love this song. I've heard a few quartets and quintets play this as part of a London jazz gig including trumpeter Dick Pearce and others who've brought this lovely tune to us masses and its simple tune belies some complicated chords perhaps. To learn this tune alone will make investing completely in Kent Hewitt's book worthwhile for me. I shall be buying the downloaded version for fifty dollars which makes it around thirty eight English Pounds - those Christmas presents will have to wait :)
Although I'm tempted to try to play the easier chords, I want to learn thoroughly and follow the comprehensive chord progressions shown.
I thought I was doing well all those years ago when I was mastering the circle of fifths for my sax and clarinet but piano playing at this level is something I never realised I actually could perhaps not only want to do but perhaps could do to a competent level. So I'm happy to be one of your devoted followers Kent!

So to recap:
We have seven important chords to learn: Maj7 - min7 - 7 - min7b5 (or half dim) - min7bb7 (or full dim) - sus4 - sus2
Each has root and 3 inversions = 4 chord variations
So, 7 chords x 4 = 28 variations multiplied by x 12 keys = total of 336 chord variation
Oh boy !! this is a lot of work :))
You'll find answers to questions by going to my playlists and choosing a category. I'd stay w/ the Beginner Series to start. I don't think you have to learn all the chords and inversions in every key before getting into playing songs using the chords in a few easy keys like C, F, G, Bb, Eb to start. Great follow-up to the first part with focus on the various 7ths. As a beginner it's super helpful to have the simplified version and commentary on how to approach the song and build up to the more complex voicing. Also the comments about which notes to remove was very interesting. Maybe that's good fodder for another video!?
