@@KentHewittpiano88 The other thing you do that is very helpful, is that you stick to the exact basics that you are explaining. I can't tell you how many videos I've seen, where they attempt to do what you do, but then after explaining EXACTLY what to play, they can't help but automatically adding a couple of additional passing tones in the bass when THEY play the "example". And yes, as a music pro who understands theory totally, but doesn't have keyboard skills, THE single biggest problem for me is melody (right hand) fingering. For example, in C, and I start in C position. But when melody moves higher, say the next phrase is (higher octave) A B C E G, do I play the A and B with fingers 1, 2 (A position), or go 2, 3 thumb under to C position. Not asking for an answer here, but this is the stuff most folks don't address, and watching your detail, I can start to get a feel for it.
Thanks, being a classical trained pianist that tries to look around jazz your videos are very helpful, they just hit the right spot for the ones who already know enough to play (mechanically) but have little insight inside a jazz player's head while he plays.

Just watched this video 4 years after it was made! Thank you for a great lesson! This helped me understand a lot more than I did before. Especially with the target tones and passing tones. Thank you Kent for real.
What a brilliant tutorial this is. Pennies are dropping into place and theory is becoming much clearer, especially target notes in the right hand as one the notes of the chords being played in the left hand. Really well explained. Thanks so much.
Thx mister Hewitt for these "clear" lessons! I'm from Belgium and even in english It's a pleasure to "study" that way! I like it very much and please keep going!
Hello Kent; I really enjoyed your video, the instruction was clean and to the point. The piano is new to me however the tips were very informative. I need to learn how to read music so I will be happy to get your book and go from there.
A SUBSCRIBER'S BOOK ENDORSEMENT - "Mootrevo" just wanted to do a shout-out for your book; People, I’ve been using Kent’s book every day for over a year, and it’s a work of art. If you like Kent’s playing and the way he explains jazz and music harmony, and the songs he chooses as examples... then RUN, don’t walk to Kent’s website and get this book. He IS far too modest about this amazing jazz workbook he has created. It is simply the best I have ever used, and I’ve tried a lot of them. It has improved my playing and understanding of jazz theory tremendously. I can’t imagine any student of jazz piano and/or jazz harmonic theory not liking this book. It’s simply that good. It’s fun. It’s straight forward. And unlike so many other jazz books, it’s not boring!! (sorry for the immodesty, if you want my book, but can't afford it, write to me for special price ...KH). www.kenthewitt.com
I finally got a working keyboard to practice piano after all these years watching your channel and your videos were the first place I went to for drills. Thank you so much for spreading your music and experiences!
I've been watching a lot of theory and piano practice videos and I don't think I've ever had so many A Ha! moments. Concepts just gelled in my mind with your explanations. Thank you!
Thank you so much - like some other viewers, I am a classically trained pianist but lack confidence (and skill) to play jazz. This is the best video I have seen to show what you can do with simple chords and improvisations. Target note! Who knew!. I cannot buy your book hardcopy as I am in UK but I will try to download digital version. Meanwhile I will work my way through the videos. Fantastic. Lynn
You can actually jam and create beautiful improvisations just using this, I cannot understand where 345 dislikes came from. I have been doing this exercise every day. Thank you Kent
@@KentHewittpiano88 really good , I jam over this chord progression as a daily exercise, thank you. Would there be any chance you could do one like this but for minor chords?
I am so grateful to have discovered your videos! At age 63, and a fairly decent piano "dabbler", noticeable improvement has happened after watching just 4 of your videos and practicing a little right afterwards! Looking forward to learning lots more from you!!!
As a high school student who had never had any official piano lessons, this is seriously the best video I've seen on this topic. Thank you so much for uploading!
Another great instructional video Kent on a technique that I was never taught when learning the piano and I can now appreciate the possibilities of mastering the art of improv. Thank for all your help in these vids.
+Robert Bernard That's one of my favorite videos and I teach that technique to people on all levels....but unfortunately that video is under-appreciated.
Been looking for you all my life. I'll ask a teacher what chord to play next and they go off and tell me all about chord families so I leave. Yes, I agree chord families are important and I have studied / learned the values of each chord degree and where they want to resolve to but guess what? by talking about target notes you have finally answered my questions about where to go from here. Thank you. You are the only one who has ever answered my questions. Thank you.
Thank you, sir, for putting me in that elite class. Your comment is very affirming for me. Please write to me anytime with questions, and keep watching
I appreciate your compliments, because I think this lesson is very important to understand for basic improvisation, however it's unfortunately overlooked, and I don't know what to do about that.
wow! how simply you explained improvisation! unlike any other teacher on youtube!!! youve got true talent and skill! Ill have to get your theory book!!!!
I can´t understand why this video has 12 people that don´t like it... An a musician and pianist of classical music and this video explain the easiest way th II-V-I progression...kepp that work! God bless you!

I wish I had discovered tour RUclips Channel and book years ago. The book is a masterpiece--so well thought out that total beginners as well as people with lots of musical experience can benefit. A bargain if someone bought it just for your tune arrangements. Every one of your videos is a great example of 'economy of motion'--now to get my arthritic fingers to do what I want!!!!!

At 11:50 you say that you will cover inverting the dm7 and using b9's, but it looks like that segment was cut out. Can you please show a few of the inversions?
Forest Desert I'll put my two cents in here . dfac is the root form of dm7 the first inversion or alternate form is facd the second is is acdf the third is wait a minute those are the notes of f 6. you play arpeggios here too. you can pretty much play any white keys here and sound good to my ear.. as time goes by this will become natural to you.

Just found you. I am self taught with lots of bad habits I shouldn’t be doing. I learned heart and soul as a kid and all I play is variations of that. I have some wonderful times at the piano but am very limited and if I don’t get lost and it just comes out of me (Unconsciously) then I am very rudimentary. I am going to use this lesson to get my left hand doing more. Really like your method of explanation. Looking forward to diving in.

Very nice, I play guitar and a lot of guitar teachers basically say same stuff, but then when they do some examples say in c major, they throw in a bunch of chromatics, sharps/flats. You verifiably were doing what you described in C major only which was nice.

After a lifetime of piano playing (50 years) and trying (and failing!) to figure out what jazz is just by listening, I have finally found a tutor who can explain the subject and have it make sense Thanks Kent you have changed my life! Regards Julian
Julian...wow, that's awesome!! I just try to do what comes natural ...so I'm grateful to hear how it's helping you to be a better player. Please keep in touch ...thanks!
You are an incredible teacher.
Many thanks for the affirmation!
Kent Hewitt Yeah thanks a bunch man, these videos are gold
sandman0829 so good
Great! Thank you. Easy to understand and you're not showing off like a lot of jazz teachers on RUclips.
I appreciate the comment!
After hours of searching i finally found a simple tutorial...
And everything is kept so simple it's unbelievable
Letmy T: You just made my day!....great comment and very encouraging...please write to me anytime. All the best! KH
Ozzie Bob,
As an 82 year old Viet Vet bar-room sing along klunker , I thought my learning days were well past. Not so after getting your above video, I think I've
Found the "Holy Grail". Forever grateful.
I'm forever grateful for your complimentary comment...that keeps me going!
It's amazing. I started learning music theory and watched this video, and learned a lot. I watched it again after continuing to learn more, and it's so helpful in an entirely different way. I think I'll come back to your videos for a long time, Kent.
Thanks for telling me. I guess I should do more videos like this one.
Just watched this video 4 years after it was made! Thank you for a great lesson! This helped me understand a lot more than I did before. Especially with the target tones and passing tones. Thank you Kent for real.
Should I do a new version? Thanks!
Good note about the target tones, that was very helpful
I'm glad to help out! Thank you!
Yeah wasn't that great?!
Pun not intended? ;) love your videos Kent!!
Ittt was awesomeeee! Thanks Kent for the very easy explanation of Target notes. Really really helped me to progress
This video is 9 years old but timeless!! Wonderful..and received almost 1.000 positive comments🎉
So glad to hear your comment!
I appreciate your tutorials. Absolutely phenomenal work. Thank you Sir
Many thanks!
What a brilliant tutorial this is. Pennies are dropping into place and theory is becoming much clearer, especially target notes in the right hand as one the notes of the chords being played in the left hand. Really well explained. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thx mister Hewitt for these "clear"
lessons!
I'm from Belgium and even in english It's a pleasure to "study"
that way!
I like it very much and please keep
going!
Kent Hewitt Hi there, I can’t seem to find the second part of this video, I.e. the inversions of what is in this video. What’s it called? Thank you!
Go to this video, there's 2 parts.
ruclips.net/video/w5mP8RYIBlI/видео.html
Which book? There are several but none have this exercise.
@@janethudgins3299 www.kenthewitt.com/my-book. I bought it too. it's a much more in depth explanation, with many nice jazztunes to illustrate with

I finally got a working keyboard to practice piano after all these years watching your channel and your videos were the first place I went to for drills. Thank you so much for spreading your music and experiences!
Thanks, Nicolle, I'm glad you found me and are writing to tell me, you made my day...good luck!
Maybe one of the best tutorials I have ever seen! Thanks for uploading this mate, cheers and blessings! Greetings from Indonesia!
Great comment...thanks so much!
I've been watching a lot of theory and piano practice videos and I don't think I've ever had so many A Ha! moments. Concepts just gelled in my mind with your explanations. Thank you!
That's great....I'm glad to help out!
Fantastic. Lynn
I apprecaite the comment....you can download the PDF and bring it (flash drive) to a print show...it's less expensive than shipping overseas. Thanks!
rare breed of a great personality and graceful articulation. thanks Kent.
Eloquent compliment....one of the best...and, truly, much appreciated!
You can actually jam and create beautiful improvisations just using this, I cannot understand where 345 dislikes came from.
I have been doing this exercise every day. Thank you Kent
Thanks for letting me know that this early video of mine is still valuable!
@@KentHewittpiano88 really good , I jam over this chord progression as a daily exercise, thank you. Would there be any chance you could do one like this but for minor chords?
Thanks for the request...I'll give that some thought.
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thanks a mill
I am so grateful to have discovered your videos! At age 63, and a fairly decent piano "dabbler", noticeable improvement has happened after watching just 4 of your videos and practicing a little right afterwards! Looking forward to learning lots more from you!!!
Hi Linda...welcome to the club of "dabblers"...glad you're improving and thanks so much for the comment !
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thank you Kent! I am continuing to watch, learn and practice!! :-)
Hope to see some more of these for beginners.

There are lots of good players, MUCH fewer good teachers.
Appreciate the clarity and 'bite sized' chunks of info Kent.
Keep up the good work!
They say good players are not good teachers ...I tried harder. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I've been away from home for a while and I miss playing my piano. So beautiful!
Thanks for the affirmation!
As a high school student who had never had any official piano lessons, this is seriously the best video I've seen on this topic. Thank you so much for uploading!
Thanks for the comment and affirmation...that keeps me going!
you're an incredible teacher, thanks for these videos
Your comment keeps me going...many thanks!
This is tremendous. Thank you so much for posting it.
Thanks for telling me and blessings for the New Year!
Please write to me anytime with questions, and keep watching
so to clarify for beginners level #1, right hand target tones are any tone that the left hand is currently playing. Is that correct?
This is theost briliant jazz improvisation tutorial ever
+JinYoung Bang Thanks for the affirmation!.....I've used that simple exercise for years and it's useful...doesn't matter what level you play at.
I agree!! muchas gracias Sr. Kent por tu aporte!!
I appreciate your compliments, because I think this lesson is very important to understand for basic improvisation, however it's unfortunately overlooked, and I don't know what to do about that.
Martin velez el tiene una manera no complicada de ensenar musica..es uno de mi canales favoritos.
holy shit this makes so much sense. "Target tones" and "passing tones" are really good ways to interpret the style of this improv
Improv is holy!
Well, you can explain it to me in 7 min.. my teacher couldnt do it in 2 year... :) thank you!
I'm glad I could help out!
Kent is one the best jazz music teacher I´ve Knew...!!!
Thank you so much!
best teaching so far, thanks for making easy
Thanks for the support...it's very helpful to me!
wow! how simply you explained improvisation! unlike any other teacher on youtube!!! youve got true talent and skill! Ill have to get your theory book!!!!
That's a really nice comment, Jennie, very helpful to me. Go here for book info:

you are my hero.
thank you!
You are my hero for telling me and for your sincerity!
I can´t understand why this video has 12 people that don´t like it... An a musician and pianist of classical music and this video explain the easiest way th II-V-I progression...kepp that work! God bless you!
Thanks so much for the support....a golden rule...you can't please everyone.
yes...I'm learning a lot of this page ...my piano teacher never taught me popular music so now I'm learning on my own.... greetings from Venezuela
Great, how did I end up on this remarkably lucid presentation of jazz improvisation??
Thanks for the affirmation...I was talking off the top of my head...so I'm glad it is lucid and clear.
I can't tell you how much i appreciate your videos my playing has come along leaps and bounds in such a short period of time since watching. I am going to get your book this week too.... you deserve praise!! your style of teaching is a real pleasure to work with.
That's a great affirmation and much appreciated...keeps me going. Thank you!
thank you!
I like it! The chords, your ideas, everything! Got so much inspiration! Keep on going with this groovy cat stuff
Comments like yours keep me going....many thanks!
Thanks so much, William, that's a great comment and compliment. You warmed my soul and I'll keep going. Calling my book a masterpiece is huge! May your music bring you much joy!
Forest...thanks ...I'm planning on doing some new tutorials on inversions... in the meantime please watch my Easy Jazz Piano videos that deal with a lot of chord knowledge. Thanks! ruclips.net/p/PLFuMibnl_h5aTaUnQpBtsc6p1ZsLsxagq
As a huge jazz fan i've always wondered how do pianists figure out the notes they have to play with all the alterations and difficult jazz scales etc...of course i'm still a piano beginner but i can already see that i'm in the right path to find that out THANKS TO YOU !!
Manyy thaanks dear mr.kent.
Step 1....step 2. step 3.... and eventually you get there.
This is a great lesson! To the point, precise and clear. There are many tutorials here but this stands out as the best that can easily be followed. I will endeavor to go through your exercises. Now I have something I can practice. Thank You so much!

Thanks for telling me and good luck with your piano studies. I hope you will watch my beginner series.
I found out about this chord progression while scrolling Instagram and thought it sounded beautiful and came here to learn more about it. I'm thinking of using it in future songs!
Thanks for telling me!!
Man I'm so happy to stumble into your channel. I play by ears and jazz is extremely difficult to learn without notes. But just by watching some of your clips, I'm starting to get the grips of it. Your videos are starting to "open up a whole new world of music" !!!!
+YM M That's great to hear. Thanks for the compliments and all the best on your musical journey!
You are an amazing pianist! I used to take lessons but you are teaching exactly what I need. Thank you!
Wow! That's a great affirmation of what I'm trying to do here. So many thanks!
Thank you this tutorial, Kent. I’ve watched tutorial a dozen times. Finally getting it this time. Can’t wait to get on the piano to practice.
You definitely can have fun with this. Write to me with your progress!
You are a brilliant teacher. I've been searching for this lesson for years.
I appreciate your telling me!
Thank you so much for these incredibly insightful and useful videos. Thanks to you, I can express myself musically more than ever.

I appreciate your positive feedback...I try to read all comments even months later...thanks!
What a clear and concise tutorial, I'm amazed that even a beginner like me can understand this!
THAT'S THE BEST COMMENT OF THE MONTH...YOU WIN THE AWARD , SIR, GOD BLESS YOU!!
@@KentHewittpiano88 GOD BLESS YOU SIR :D
Very nice, I play guitar and a lot of guitar teachers basically say same stuff, but then when they do some examples say in c major, they throw in a bunch of chromatics, sharps/flats. You verifiably were doing what you described in C major only which was nice.
Great stuff Kent. Always enjoy your explanations. A very good motivator to get one to improvise using this pattern and later with more sophistication.
Thanks for the affirmation. I use this exercise a lot with students so I appreciate your comment.
Gosh! Kent, as a musician and an educator, you’ve earned my heartfelt respect all the way from Hong Kong! 💖
That means a lot to me...thanks for telling me!
.lovely.

Thanks for the affirmation. Particularly because it 's one of my 1st videos and what I think is a good one,.... but mostly overlooked.
Thanks God for this video, it gave me a lot of understanding on how passing chords and target notes work. Greetings from Guatemala.
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. All the best!
Sunday morning rain is... falling? (II-V-I) I love your videos and the voicing with the inversions is so simple but exactly what I've been missing from my music. Thank you!
Thanks for the affirmation...this is very helpful to me!
Very interesting and useful for those on the spot improvs in real time. THANK YOU!
Nice comment...thanks!
Finally a way to step by step acquire the capability to improvise! Thank you.
Finally it took me a lifetime to meet you...but now you are here. Blessings, my brother.
best video on jazz i count ever find - love the parisian feel to this - fab video!!
Many thanks!
You, sir, are obviously a great pianist. However, your skills as a teacher are legendary. Thank you for taking the time to pass this on.
That's a very affirming comment, and helpful to me, because I always wanted to do something significant.
Finally, someone who can break it down in realistic segments!
Why finally?....but I'm glad that I finally did it....and I'm still hanging around to do more...thanks, Janet!
I really appreciate your style of doing this. It assumes the viewer is not a total moron.
Cool comment...I appreciate it!
Thank you for clearly explaining target tones kent! This is the spice that i needed when playing piano!
Thanks for telling me...much appreciated!
I used to play the piano when I was little. Your videos make me want to take it up again.
It's never too late...thanks!
i want to shake your hands...years and years of wanting to understand this and finally i unlocked it....WOW...NO WORDS CAN EXPLAIN HOW THANKFUL I AM...I AM TEARY EYED RIGHT NOW. THANK YOU SO MUCH
THANK YOU!.... Dear friend, you just made my day. It is so helpful to me to know that you really have benefited from what I'm doing. Please stay in touch, Emerson.
Hi Ewitt !i am very glad to be back to you ,cause i had to stop playing for more than a year after a chirurgical opération on my left hand !so i have to rememoryse all the exercises that i was practicing I feel like I LIVE AGAIN !All the best for the fest and so on ! LOVE YOUT TEACHING !.....
I'm glad you're back in action, and I wish you all the best in the new year.
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thanks !i wish you also all the best and a very good health for 2020 ! It Sound's good allready !last time it was in 1010 do you remember ?
uh! ive learned all that stuff some 10 years ago, forgotten it all - but seeing it here plainly and cleanly explained most of it is coming back in a snap! much appreciated
Thanks so much for this video I get it , finally.!!!! I have spent months and months learning modes progressions, transposition and secondary dominants chord voicing, extended chord voicing sharp fives minor flat fives, inversions and so on and etc. But couldn't make music target notes!! Wow . After all the videos I've watched I can't believe none could make this so clear .I was just about ready to give up and now my playing journey has just begun .I can't thank you enough. By the way. Cosmic symmetry! Music is so awesome. Did you ever notice how similar the piano is to Christianity and the bible ? 12 keys on the piano . 12 tribes of Judah. 7 notes in a scale 7 days in a week.perfect . 3 major chords 3 minor chords. The holy Trinity . Only God all mighty could create such a perfect system. Again thank you for all that you're doing to share your knowledge with the world .😂
Thanks, Tim. That's an awesome comment. And yes, music is proof of God and so are so many beautiful things on this earth. Too bad .........oh, you know what I mean!
Thanks alot Kent for your very helpful explanation of how to begin approaching jazz improvisation.
