Instagram specifically I find is very important for businesses. It blew up for small business and independents during the pandemic and hasn’t been the same since ! Word of mouth will always be important though when it comes to your local area I think.
The thing with social media is putting hashtags to cities where they don’t live . After hours of scrolling you run into into 15 stylists who does great work but they are 4 hours away !
imo, both is important. and what i like from "word of mouth" is usually you didnt need to pay it, it feels like you got free ads. and when someone is interested yet curious, she will accidently check your social media for more info/details. (but still it need more times,process, and action. bcs doing this , it can't be instant. i guess.)
