I have the same issue of wanting to make things that I don't want to keep! So what I do is throughout the year, I make whatever I want and I collect it into a basket and at Christmas we pass around the basket and everybody can have whatever they want from the basket. It works out really great and everybody gets to see a little bit of what I've made all year. Even if it's something that they don't want themselves. It's delightful.

I actually mostly crochet to give away.
Once, I made 75 (roundabout) small crochet trinkets (flowers, octopi, hats & hearts), to give away at a party I was invited to. I made it into a kinda trade-of, they write something into a notebook (just for me) and they get one of those trinkets in return. (It worked out great!! I didn't feel like I lost something and still got to give things away.)
Right now I just have to bring up the motivation to handsow the linig for a bag I'm working on. (I don't have a working sowing machine and am also not particularly good at using them..)
When I got the yarn, which the outer layer of the bag is made out of, I didn't know what I was going to make out of it. I just bought it because I thought it was pretty. The yarn reminded me of lilypads, so I went with it and made a bag in the rough shape of a lilypad. I bought most of the rest of the materials for the bag later on (lining, zipper, hooks, macramee strings, hair clips).
At the end of this project I will have used 4 different skills. Crochet, tunesian crochet, sowing and macramee.
I also finished the water lily during this video. A flower to go with the bag. Secured to a hairclip so it is removable, can be switched out, I could even use it as a hair accessory.

For frogging fluffy yarn like mohair or Melody, it's good to freeze the item before frogging. Makes the fibres unstick some and easier to frog. The crochet stitch is a F(ront)P(ost)tc, and it's commonly used for crochet cables - now that's a rabbit hole for you to check out!
As I'm watching, I'm also finishing a sweater for my partner and with every stitch I hate it more and then, right at the bindoff of the collar - the yarn has a knot. Because of course there will be one knot in 10 balls and it will happen right at the collar bindoff!

I created a wool swap in my neighborhood where I asked for sock yarn (which I will surely use) and they could take as much of the other yarn as they wanted to. It was so nice!

Now I have a giant list of preferences/ sizes for everyone in my life (who would want a handmade gift). Now, anytime I want to make something I don't want to keep, I just look at the list and I see who said they would like one of the things I want to make, in the color I want to use! Plus some of the answers I got were so cute. 10 / 10! Added benefit : I found out gifts I was planning for people weren't things they would have wanted.

Oh, my. I've been looking forward to this week's upload and you did not disappoint! It's always so much fun to catch up to you. This type of thing seems absolutely insane to me, though, "finishing my WIPs". If I have more than 2 WIPs than I have zero WIPs, because I feel overwhelmed and drop them all into an abyss of never-to-be-finished-but-perhaps-at-some-point-will-be-finished-objects. I'm a monogamous crafter. This week alone I started and finished a kindle cozy, then a laptop cozy (which, hello??? We did something similar at roughly the same time, apparently not only are our names the same, but we think similarly, too!), after that I worked on a 100g-cake yarn cozy (because I did another one last week that fits at most a 60g cake of yarn) and ended up finishing it waiting at the doctor's office, cast on a sock - at the same doctor's office, they *really* made me wait for it there - that I'm currently working on: just finished the heel turn and am working on the gusset decreases. I had to come onto the computer to comment, because your videos just relax me so, so much and they make me feel so seen! I'm also a young adult that has two pets and primarily knits, even though crochet is also one of my hobbies. You kept me company while I finished my heel turn, prepared and then ate lunch, so thanks for that, I appreciated it a lot :D
Regarding the whole "I want to make things, but not necessarily *have* the things I made": I feel like this most of the time. In my opinion I have basically all that I can knit and want to have at the moment, so what I do is literally ask people in my life stuff like: "can I make a pair of socks for you? I'll let you pick the color(s), but the pattern is up to me." Or "hey, I want to crochet some flowers, how would you like a pair of earrings?" I also exclusively make gifts, because I hate buying them. In these cases, I'll ask the person if they have something in mind and then collaborate on them to decide the pattern, color, yarn weight etc. It's a great way to involve people I love into my hobby and make sure they'll be gifted something they sincerely want, not an accessory that'll be thrown into a drawer and forgotten until they deep clean and decide to donate it LOL
Please, tell Merry and Pippin that I said pspspspspspsps!!! I really like them and love when they make an appearance in the vids. Hope you have a lovely week ahead!!

The market bag really turned out beautifully. Good choice to make the straps in single crochet - whenever I see double crochet straps I cringe because those straps would lengthen into oblivion from everyday wear. I do still think that the laptop/water bottle could stretch the body of the bag quite heavily since you were using triple crochet, so a fairly loose stitch. I don’t know how the front post technique will influence the stretchiness. But I do try to just use single crochet or (very tightly gauged!!!) double crochet patterns in bags because of stretching.

It's so nice seeing this video pop up, because this weekend was my wip busting weekend! I'm finishing up a crochet blanket that's been 85% done for months, just in time to ship it off for the recipients birthday!
As far as how much you explain things, I feel like in videos that are not teaching centric explaining however much you feel like you should in the moment is good! I primarily crochet, so when I'm watching your videos that include knitting I might not always know what you're talking about, but I'm also not really here for instruction anyway, just enjoying hearing you talk! If you did do more instructional videos, being concerned about including for all skill levels would be more of a thing, but when you're just talking about your projects do what feels natural!
    Edit:
Also the stitch that you are using on your bag I believe is called the post stitch it's one of the stitches used to make the waffle stitch/pattern in crochet!

About the crochet items and not wanting to keep them. I started a box of gifts. I made a hat and put it in the box. When christmas comes around and I'm deciding what to get everyone I'll look into my box. Or the other idea i had was to just bring the box with me on christmas and have my family pickout what they want. So no one gets something they don't need/won't appreciate.
Also I want to offer my mom and sister to take a look into the box every once in a while. They love handmade stuff but I hate the pressure of finishing stuff for other people.
If something stays there too long (hasn't happend yet, cause i just started) I plan on donating those Items.
Current future plans for the box involve: items made from acrylic (cause most people can wear it), alpaca (cause i cant wear it and want to use it up), color (combinations) i don't like and scrappy projects that i don't want to keep.

About the sweaters, i gave my mom and sisters the sweaters i can't wear because of fiber or size. My mom can wear alpaca but not most merino and my sister is around one size smaller then me. So everything i didn't like went to them.
My mom is very proud to wear a sweater i knit and tells everyone who will listen

It's called a front post triple crochet. If you go around from the back, it's a back post triple. You can combine them in various ways to make crochet cables.

I just love your videos so much! It feels like we’re on FaceTime together lol, your vibes are just lovely! I love the way you film, and getting to see your kitty babies make appearances (I also have a void kitty who feels the need to be involved in all my projects 😂) The stitch you used for the market bag I believe is called a front post crochet! And something I recently started doing was using clear fishing line while crocheting straps! It makes it so it doesn’t stretch out over time, and you can’t see it so it’s lovely! Just thought I’d share my thoughts :)

I have some yarn that I have tried to make something out of 3 or 4 times now, and it never works out. It's beautiful yarn and beautiful colors, but there is always something about the project that doesn't work for me. I gave myself permission the other day to give it away. I am so glad you decided to do the same.
And, 80s girl here, it's the pink. The blue and purple should have closer to the same saturation as the pink to be truly 80s, but yeah, the color combo, definitely.

It's so silly, but I absolutely love that you like Murder She Wrote lol. We had a house fire a few years back, and that was a series I bought on DVD to watch while I crocheted to keep myself busy until we got to move into our new place. To this day, I love it. And Monk and Psych (currently watching myself for projects) are other favs. Seems I was quite the fan if USA network back in the day lol.

The stitch for the bag is called a front post. It can be made with any crochet stitch dc and above. I like to use this for ribbing on a crochet garment. When alternating front and back post stitches, it creates very nice ribs. I want to experiment with the post stitches to mimic a fisherman-type knit pattern in crochet. Post stitches are also commonly used to make crochet cables. I like to make small things with crochet such as stuffed animals/amigurumi or Christmas ornaments. Hooked by Kati has patterns for dragons and other mythological creatures which are larger and uses certain advanced techniques to produce the shapes of the legs. They are the best I have seen. I really like the striped sweater with the puffy sleeves you wear at 28.15. Where may I find that pattern?

    • @BreathingYarn
      @BreathingYarn  7 месяцев назад

It was an improvised raglan, but Veronika Lindberg (Kutovakika) has a good pattern for that. It's called the "Stay Up Til Dawn" sweater in her book, but he "Cinema Sweater" is also very very similar and can be bought separately.

Have you heard of freezing a mohair project before trying to frog it? It does seem to help the yarn release from itself easier. I also found the direction that the yarn is pulled can help too.

I think I edited that out in the video! I talked about it for a while and then cut it out of the video because it was getting so long. While I hope I dont have to unravel this material again, I'll have to remember to freeze it. Although, knowing me, I'll forget next time too.
