Thank you Malcom. I started teaching myself to oil paint landscapes by watching RUclips videos nearly 2 years ago at age 71. I was in great mental distress from years of Trump and Covid and I was watching way too much news and TV. Almost the day I started painting my life changed dramatically. I completely stopped watching the news and rarely watch TV. I paint on smaller canvases nearly everyday and have improved very much. I'm fortunate that I don't need to earn a living so I give all my paintings away and am happy to report that people do request my paintings. I receive so many compliments and tons of support. My husband is my #1 fan. It's wonderfully amazing how much more observant I am since taking up painting. I'm working on a larger painting now, always trying for looser brushstrokes and juicy paint. I want to try plein air also. There's so much to learn and do and I love it!

Thank you for speaking about this subject, Malcolm. I didn't start painting until my 50s and wrestled some with wishing I'd started sooner. Something that helped me -- in addition to recognizing your point about such regrets being a waste of time -- was when a more experienced artist "of a certain age" told me she could see the life experience in my work. Remembering that we can bring a certain depth to our creative work from years of living has been valuable to me.

Through watching and listening to your videos and podcasts, I slow down and become aware of beauty in this world on so many levels. It quiets my soul. Thanks again Malcolm, for how you instruct and encourage me to try some simple ideas which have helped me to enjoy my creative journey.

I had been a silkscreen printer for 43 years, participating in craft fairs all over New England and selling my prints & clothing also in galleries. After retiring, I really wanted to keep working with all the wonderful art supplies that are available, and it’s very important to me be able to keep my beautiful studio in this craft center among a terrific group of potters, painters and weavers. My return to painting has been fun and I love using oils. I have taken many workshops also in watercolor. I love challenging my 73 year old self, and I think I will be a student of all kinds of art for 20 more years! I have more ideas and plans than time remaining. But that, to me, is a good thing. I have had several exhibits of my oil paintings, and even sold some. To me, the whole idea is to see and learn new things. Figuring out “how do you do that?” Pet portraits, flowers, and now landscapes!

Thank. You so much for the wise and encourgaing words! I consider you a mentor in my artistic journey….Left art 50 years ago to pursue a career and raise my family. With covid, and other difficult experiences I took up painting. It was therapy, and still is. I just turned 70, and i get giddy each time I am in front of the easel. I have been painting whenever I can, sometimes at night, and it s a passion that won t go away. I love nature, particularly the wild. CAnadian landscapes around me and I try to imitate nature! Your youtube lessons are amazing. Thank you for teaching people like me to not give up. Blessings!

I thought only little kids were allowed to be free spirits, with glistening eyes that fear nothing. A long time ago, I climbed mountains , loved what I saw, and I had it too, but lost it. Now, it s back. I'm a kid again, despite the harsh realities of the world around us! I splash around in paint the way my tiny grandkids splash in the mud and water puddles!

Thank you so much! What a beautiful story and contribution to to all the art videos on you tube! It is a unique art video and a video that has wisdom and insights that comes with age. I am happy to watch all of your videos! I think that support from others is very important especially when we get older. Art is a solitary endeavor as well as aging, and an art community keeps one from feeling lonely. I enjoy being alone, but I also enjoy being and talking with others, especially art!

Wonderful! Your story brought things to mind I had not considered leading to revelations about creativity and art in my own pursuit of painting. Having gotten so focused on technique, materials and such, consideration of my inner landscape had been put by the wayside and painting had become laborious and the joy had waned. With insight gained in your podcast I have a fresh start viewing painting differently and much better. Thank you ever so much!❤

Dearest Malcolm, up until yesterday I admired you work and you’re excellent pedagogy. However, today after listening to this podcast I thought you were talking to me, a friend. I’m 74 going on 21, put together several exhibitions but the last one was 6 yrs ago. Covid got in the way and I developed a sensitivity to traditional oils. So I work with water soluble but still need to open windows for air circulation. So my biggest challenge is our blasted winter here in Quebec. It bothers me that I am not at my easel and yet I fear I lost it, I lost the hand ,the confidence. Thanks❤

Thank you Malcolm. I'm so glad to have found you on this channel as I've been searching for ways to be more expressive in my art. I've been painting for 27 years starting in oils and have tried many other mediums to find my voice, always returning to oils (primarily realistic). Watching and studying your techniques has helped move me beyond, catapulting me further than I thought possible. You're truly a blessing-Thank you.

Wife and sister-in-law decided to do an evening paint a picture in acrylic. Closer to paint by numbers then creative art, but I joined them. Paint by numbers came next, too tedious and for all the work lacked polish. Well dug up my 30 year old water color paints and started to that again.
I am lucky that what I earned a living doing, now retired, was creative. My niche was designing product not already in their product mix. In the artist world I am an illustrator. The type of think I designed had a high entry cost to even get close to a market. Well beyond my check book.
So painting allows me to get back into being creative. The product range I tackled was quite wide so art is another variation. Painting is just a different mountain, walking those mountain paths and seeing the fine detail in my mind. Finding the path to the conclusion. Finish the painting before a brush stroke of paint, however; the painting was at product. Painting has that same nature to it. Oils or acrylics permits changing your mind, discovery nature of something that come out of the clouds or rather you find in the fog. The is always different then originally imagined.

Thank you for this inspiring video. I love to read stories and books about artists’ experiences and thoughts. It helps me to understand that there can be a meaning, not just a superficial beauty in my paintings. The frustrating part is that I have not reached that point yet. I am getting better at producing a painting, but I don’t know how to add the underlying meaning. I am 70 and running out of time, also, but I will not let my age be a deterrent. Be sure, if you can, to once in a while share something similar to this. I need it!

What an inspiration that old Chinese man from so long ago is still today! I am already beyond middle age 😂 but have this drive to paint, it’s like a calling or like breathing, I just have to do it, even though I am still trying to learn, make loads of mistakes, I am happy to continue to do so and hopefully be like the old man who could no longer talk with his voice but just with his art! How precious is that!
Thank you for that inspirational podcast Malcolm 😘

The exact identity is not known - it is a more allegorical story - but it captures the idea behind the Shan Sui concept of painting in 400 AD

Thank you for this encouraging and enlightening video. I do struggle with my painting and feel as though I make the same mistakes over and over and never get to see a finished painting. However each time I go back to try to resolve the problem I am hopeful that maybe this time I will get it right. Hope springs eternal! And it is fun despite the challenges along the way.
