Nice demo Malcolm! My experience with the Opens is that they dry really flat. Unless you use some kind of thickening medium, you lose any or all of the initial texture you might see when they're still wet. With oils, not so. They hold all the peeks and valleys very nicely. I've used Golden Coarse Molding Paste with them and it's a really nice textured affect you can get.
True, they are not going to imitate oils texture-wise, only drying time.
Oh, needed to read this, thanks!
That is a absolutely lovely painting, I like how you work all the colours , dabbing, stroking , smoothing its Fab, love your artistry, really pleasing,👍🖌️🎨 From Frances uk ♥️
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for the update demo with acrylics Malcolm…I have been on a “pastel” journey of late but now after watching your demo I’m keen to return to acrylics of oils …much appreciated 🙏
You are so welcome!
Красивая мазковая техника...без реализма...очень красиво написан свет...огромное количество оттенков ..хороший формат и качество ! Восторг и восхищение ! Браво Моэстро !!!
Great demo. However, I really prefer oils because the acrylic colours aren’t natural, they look exactly what they are 😳 plastic and artificial. Just my opinion.
Акрил уже давно вошел в моду и не выглядит как пластик...есть специальные разбавители которые придают ему интересную мягкую текстуру а в чудесных руках Мелкома по истине смотрятся шедеврально !!!
Adding a touch of a neutral gray helps
Love Golden Open Acrylics. Very versatile, especially for painting En Plein Air. Sounds more like user error - maybe you just need to learn how to properly mix colors.
I started many years ago in oil paint with Bob Ross and later switched to acrylics and never went back. It took some time to get them to blend like oils, but over time the quality and consistency has greatly improved. I love the Open acrylics.
Recently I decided to give oils another go using water mixable oils. I think they are OK too. I like that there are no solvents involved with using them.
Yes, both have advantages and are a pleasure to use. Variety is the key.
Thank you Malcolm for the beautiful demo. I love using golden open acrylic because they’re buttery soft smooth and easy to blend. Since I paint slower they are perfect for me they don’t dry out as fast as other acrylic paints.
Yes, I think you have the perfect use case for them.
Looking forward to it Malcolm. Always wanted to buy open acrylics but as you know here in South Africa they are rather pricey, so this is the perfect platform to find out if they are indeed worthy!
A few more demos coming with them too which will help the decision.
I used regular Golden white with these, outdoors, and the mixes overall tacked up sooner, a nice inbetween of regular and open acrylics.
Super gorgeous❤ I love it. What a transformation for all those greens 😍
Thank you!! 😊
Loved this demonstration, Malcolm!! I bought the open acrylics this spring and have been experimenting with them ever since. I loved how you didn't use a medium like water to dilute the paints - it made them feel really creamy. I'm going to try this for myself next time I use them.
Yes, the paints are perfect from the tube. Thank you
Malcolm, I forgot to mention that I have heard from other artists , that these do tend to be a bit more transparent than other paints( i'm not sure if they mean compared to other acrylics or oils).. For me, I have nothing to compare them to . For you , you'll know better as you have experience with both mediums.. I've heard they're wonderful for glazing techniques , too ..
looking forward to the demo , and your thoughts .. Norakag 👍👍
while watching malcolm, i thought the colors looked more transparent.
when the picture is already finished for me, malcolm adds so many details for what feels like half an hour... 🙂
i am an absolute fan and find his pictures beautiful 😍
thanks malcolm
Thank you ❤
They still set to fast although somewhere in between acrylic and oil. The pigment load seems to be much better and that’s wonderful. Surprisingly easy to work with it appears. I think I would like to try them, especially since they aren’t so flat in the end.
Yes, with practice, they will look very much like oils, especially after a coat of retouch varnish. The texture is different, of course, but the vibrancy is great.
I'm looking forward to your demo Malcolm! After your thoughts on how these compare to oils, I'd be curious to know how you think these compare to water-mixable oils, which you've also previously reviewed. That is, if you wanted to move away from the toxicity of oil mediums and cleanup, would you prefer water-mixable oils or the Golden Open Acrylics? Thanks!
It's a great question. I hope to cover that further in the second acrylics demo next week. I suspect the line between acrylics and oils will never overlap completely. You may just have to pick your side or enjoy them both - its a dilemma 😄
Thank you! I've been using Open for a few years and love the quality! Appreciate you!
Thank you!
I thank you ✅✅
Great demo! Beautiful greens.❤ Thank you Malcolm!
Looked like alot of fun. The paints were clean and the vibrancy was lovely.
Maybe you might try some more acrylic paintings.
I sure learnt alot.😊
Very interested in your opinion of these. I purchased 2 different sets so I would have a wider range of colors to experiment with. I am on the fence on these, but I am a very new painter. I really enjoy your work and style of painting, I am excited to see your results with these paints.
i've been working with them fairly recently, and I love them .. i bought them specifically because I don't see working with oils in my future , and thought these would be great way to have closer experience to working with oils.. really lovely to work with !! Norakag, here 👍👍
Thanks for sharing Nora, yes they are excellent acrylics - not oils - but you will not be regretting that either.
Can't wait!!😃
always love to watch you paint..you make it look soooo simple..thank you
Thank you Penny
Great news! Looking forward to this! Thank you very much Malcolm!!
I have already painted with them after your review. I love them. Looking forward to the demo!!!!!❤❤❤
Oh Malcolm this is so exciting - I am so looking forward to this class :) So excited. 😄
I'm really looking forward to this, thanks Malcolm.
Thank you! Looking forward to your class.😊
Lovely as always, Malcolm! Always inspiring me to paint loosely and with vibrancy! I paint mostly with oils or guache( I gave all of my acrylics to my granddaughter), but after your demo, I may purchase some of these paints to try out!
Excellent, thank you
Thanks for sharing! I use regular acrylics and have wanted to try these so it’s good to have a demonstration. Beautiful painting by the way 🤗
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the demo Malcolm… love the painting…
My pleasure
Looking forward to your class! You are wonderful!!
Watching, listening, wondering Gouache do the same thing without dulling in places? Love my oils and have done the acrylic-thing but currently trying to get an idea about Gouache. Your expertise is amazing. Thinks.
Thank you, Gouache dries to a very consistent velvety or satin surface. Unique actually. With acrylics I will still varnish the painting so it all looks at its best.
Wow, cool. I need to try this paint😊Thank you, Mr Malcolm
You are very welcome
I would love to see the same simple scene painted in the OPEN acrylics as well as in oils to compare the results.
Next week's demo will cover that. 😊
Awesome demonstration. The greens were so varied and seemed to jump off the canvas.
Thanks so much!
Great demo. You answered many of my questions. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I use Open Acrylics for plein air. Will enjoy seeing what you think about them. I have my opinion!
The OPEN Acrylics are fabulous. They are indeed slow drying and they don't dry down too dark or too light as standard acrylics do.
Yes the drying time is indeed easy to manage now.
What a beautiful scene! 😊
Thanks Astrid, the beautiful Cape
Thank you Malcolm for all your wonderful work. I’ve learned a lot from you. I enjoy your painting style and look forward to joining you if I can. I have to figure out how to convert to eastern standard time.
Акрил уже давно вошел в моду и не выглядит как пластик...есть специальные разбавители которые придают ему интересную мягкую текстуру а в чудесных руках Мелкома по истине смотрятся шедеврально !!!
May I please find out what type of brush you used in this demo. Was it a flat bright? Love your videos! Learning so much!
Yes, basic synthetic flats. Long or bright.
Amazing use of color!
A great demo, thank you. A question, if I may: How long approx was the paint moveable/blendable on the canvas and how long did it stay useable on the palette? I know there are a lot of variables but just some idea would help. Thanks!
Easily workable on the canvas for the hour it took to paint. The piles of paint on the palette were workable for days later. Quite amazing. No problem carrying on the next day.
@@MalcolmDewey Thanks, much appreciated. Sounds like a happy medium (!) between acrylics and oils.
Helpful, inspiring, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Since these are still acrylics, wouldn't they mix well with other brands like Liquitex and give an in-between extended drying time?
Possibly, let us know.
I really enjoyed this demo Malcom , I am petrified of using acrylics b3cause I work slow and also use my fingers to smooth out the edges. However, I ‘’m motivated to use these golden acrylics for a big painting of wildflowers .
Wonderful! They will be the right choice.
Looking forward to this!
I notice you don’t add any water to the acrylic paint, or use a damp palette. How long would you say it stays wet and workable if used plein air? I am flying on holiday soon and can’t take oil paint on the plane so am considering acrylics instead. Thanks - excellent demonstration!
Correct, the paints rival oils for staying wet. No issues with using them in a similar way.
Yes, sign me up! 😊
If you are a master like Malcolm,it doesn't matter what paint you work with,in any case the result is brilliant! But we suffer 😥and blame everything - the quality of the paint, the weather, the lunar eclipse and the neighbor's cat that passed by😆
😅 thank you, it's good to have a few excuses too
Thank you. ♥️🌼
Welcome!
Very nice, please give us an update when you have used it more. I am getting ready to start my 2nd painting I am looking forward to it. Thank You!
Will do! Should be next week's video.
@@MalcolmDewey That is great! I am starting mine tomorrow. Let us know how the thicker paint dried. I have not been very consistent in painting to evaluate because and I am inexperienced and work a full time job so there is short painting times and long drying in between my sessions. Have a wonderful weekend!
Looking forward to 😊
Thanks!
It's a pleasure, thank you for your support
Can these acrylics be rehydrated like Atelier interactive? I think you will have to use some impasto Gel to get an all prima result. Because texture in acrylic comes from layers, trying to paint with acrylics as you would with oils is not probably going to be satisfying it wasn't for me, I paint in probably 5 layers minimum and although I use interactive acrylic I hardly ever utilise the rehydration aspect of them, and I use fast medium fixer to speed up the drying if I'm glazing or scummbling. It will be interesting to see how you go. Cheers
Gary
Never heard or rehydrating acrylic. Open Acrylics layer fine without gel as they are slow drying, but if you want considerable impasto texture then use an impasto medium.
How do I register for the demonstration on the 14th August?
On the top right there is a button that says "Notify Me" then you will receive a message when the video begins.
Love it
Thank you very much.
💛
I will not be able to watch this live. Will there be a recording of it to see at a later time? I hope so.
Yes the recording will be there.
I find your demos informative though I now use pastels. Color is color, yes?
Yes, all painting is a treat
❤👍👍👍👍
