Gary was the best at the time, everyone knows it even Nick knows it. I have the utmost respect for him. Even now hearing him speak he was and is a leader and honorable person.
A great interview Peter.Gary is such a gentleman he holds no grudges against Nick Mallet- even good to hear they still chat to one another occasionally! But I still think that if Gary had led the Boks to RWC 99 they would've won that world cup!!!
Thanks Sean. Gary was great and just showed his class and humility in this conversation. I agree that if Gary had been there in 1999 we would have gone all the way!
Great interview with Gary. He was a top class Springbok captain. Sad he was not picked to play in the 1999 rugby world cup. I think we need him in SA rugby either as part of the coaching staff or at a administration level. Thank you Peter for this great interview.
He really was top class, Ben. A great player, great captain and a great guest too. Tragic that he missed out on the 1999 World Cup in the way that he did. It's a shame he isn't involved in our rugby. Glad you enjoyed the video!
He really was a gentle giant , Gary T. What a gentleman, no resentment and just loving life, you can see that as he still looks great in his late 50s Glad to see him in good spirit and hope he can continue to be himself What an inspiration For now Pieter I won’t even commend this great interview as I will be repeating myself every week (oh crap I just did ) Oh well I guess I will just be stuck on replay Great job😂
You really have great guests. It's what sets you apart. You deserve to get to 100k subscribers and I'm gonna do my best to help you get there (this a belated comment after having watched many videos, so not specifically related to this one)
Good one, Pete. Gary comes across as a very decent bloke, and you can see he was reluctant to dish too much dirt on Nick, Alan, and the Bobby saga. He said what he had to say and left it at that. Respect. Looks like he has left the disappointment of not making the world cup behind him and focused on the good memories that came with those 17 unbeaten games. Gary, Ian Mac, Honnibal, Mark Andrews, Dick Muir, Andre Joubert, and John Allen will always be remembered for their time during the Natal rugby glory days. Those were good times. Have a great Sunday in Doha, buddy.
Thanks TK! He is a very decent bloke indeed and I'm so pleased I could get him on the show. The way he dealt with the Nick, Alan, Bobby saga was very classy. As you say 17 wins in a row is indeed something wonderful to instead focus on. Happy times for Boks fans! You have a great Sunday too, bud!
@frontrowrugby Hey Pete. Just seen a clip from Final Whistle on Supersport where Nick Mallet mentions his biggest mistake in the 1999 world cup was one of leadership, where by not selecting Gary Teichman, it had a huge effect on players in the team and left a big leadership gap. Amazing and coincidental, we just had the Gary interview yesterday. Cheers.
Wow, that's incredible! Very cool timing. I want to get Mallett on this show in the next year too so we can discuss that issue too. The channel will be celebrating the one year anniversary in about two weeks and then comes the Rugby World Cup but after that I want to see if I can get a few more coaches on the channel in the second year. Markgraaff, Carl, Mallett and Harry are top of my list! By the way is that clip on RUclips? I sometimes come across Final Whistle stuff on my timeline here too.
Greatest forward I ever saw in the flesh; honoured to watch him captain the world-famous Black and Ambers for two seasons. Never seen a more mobile, athletic 8; under every ball, man was like a shapeshifter.
Another fantastic interview. Teich was always one of my favourite players growing up. I have huge respect for the way he handled being dropped from the World Cup squad.
So glad you enjoyed it, Andrew. Nice to see you in the comments again too! Teich was an outstanding player and a wonderful Springbok captain. The way he handled the way he was mistreated is exemplary!
Great man, great hero, fantastic captain. Went to the same junior school CJR. Moved the same year to Bulawayo. Gary went to Hillside junior I went to Tennyson junior. This is were it all starts. He played fantastic rugby and cricket. I still remember our final rugby game of our junior school was against Hillside and I am sure they had not lost a game that season. Gary scored a try from a maul 5 yards out no stopping him from that range. Wonder if he can remember the score? I slotted a drop goal which won us the game. I went on to Plumtree school only to find his family had moved South. Great move for his career. We all salute you well done Gary, a hero to all of us.
You know its a good one when it's over before you realize it. Of all of the captains that we had since re-admission, Gary was always the one that struck a cord with me the most. You had Francois with his charisma, Joost who would just drag the team along and elevate those around him, John, the one guy who could tell Bakkies no, and get it listened to, Sia who leads by committee, and always deflects praise to his players, and the list goes on. However, Gary just got on with it, always led by example, and was not afraid to kick to the line when the 3 was on offer. It far more common now, and part of a plan, but he was one of the first captains to employ that with more frequency than most. It says allot about the man that the only thing he had to say about his dropping was that he would have liked to have been given the chance to play himself back to form. All of us have our own favorite Bok captain, but Gary was mine, even to this day. I have been secretly hoping you could get him, and you delivered, thank you so much!
So happy you enjoyed it, Thomas. Gary was a special captain for sure. I must admit I've never really thought about who my favourite skipper is but I'll say this: You can't go wrong with Teich! Nice analysis too on the different leaders the Boks have had since readmission. I'm so glad I could deliver an interview that you've been secretly hoping for. By the way, never be shy to make a request!

Great interview, Great example of what as a captain should be like. Interesting comments about Markgraaff and Carel ( zero coaching history) The way players find out when they are dropped has always being a recurring issue. Gary deserved better respect at the time. He wasnt out of form ( like Pienaar was ) and definitely not 5th best 8 in country at the time.

Bad interviewer but lucky for him his guests are legends. Gary is awesome - so measured and humble. He takes the good and bad in perspective - a good lesson for us all and for millenials
Dropping Francois Pienaar and Gary Teichmann was infuriating . They would have been happy to relinquish the captaincy and be in the “B” team. Have an opportunity to play themselves back into the starting team. As Gary says they were both dropped and 3-4 inferior players taken on tour. Markgraaf and Mallet quite frankly owe an apology to the fans.

Mallet and Solomon seem to be the only people on the planet who thought Gary shouldn’t have been in the ‘99 squad. A quite unbelievable decision.
Unbelievable is the word!
Mallet said his biggest mistake. But it is what it is. A total fukup, he should have known better. We live with that one not least Gary.
At least Mallett has owned up. But sadly we'll never know what might have been.
Shocking decision the Springbok fans hated. Dirty move by M & S.
Great interview. I played with Garry in 95 at Rovers in Durban. He was such a beast of a player. And an equally champion bloke off the field as well.
