I love enemies to lovers, but mot when its driven by LUST. When they slowly start to notice eachothers positive personality traits, and transition from enemies, to frenemies, to friends, to lovers, THAT is what i like.
Enemies to Lovers stories where the couple hate and lust for each other simultaneously, and get together because of it: 🤚😤 Enemies to Lovers stories where the couple starts off hating each other, and then, through getting to know each other better, grow to realize that they don't hate each other anymore, enjoy the bickering dynamic they got going on, and genuinely just want to care for and protect each other while calling each other names: 😩👌🏻
The whole point of enemies to lovers for me was that two people saw each other at their worst and slowly learned to see the good and accept each other wholeheartedly for it all. Making them lust for each other from the start gives rose-tinted glasses to how they view each other (atleast for me personally) and doesn't give the same emotional weight and satisfaction to see them learn more about each other and gradually fall in love
Absolutely agree. I personally dislike enemies to lovers overall. I can barely recall the tropes usage in any compelling way, and even some examples I googled feel less like enemies and more like starting off lightly antagonistic or brusque. As you mention, part of it is just shoddily developed conflict/resolution but another could be shoddy characterization. These characters don’t feel like they have personality, as they exist without real wants and needs. They also don’t act in a way that really distinguishes them from other stories or even within their own world, but more that they satisfy the aesthetics and general hallmarks of the story before rushing into the steamy moments. Of course, maybe I’ve only seen bad renditions of the trope, so I am open to a recommendation to change my mind, but I usually hate its usage.
YES ! I can't agree more ! I read some of those recently and it didn't make any sense in that book : the strong independant women who experiments terrible thingsin life began to be cheesy af because of the dude + they....had no reason to be ennemies in the first place. the guy is nice, but very different from her, they didn't match, even to be friends but....ennemies to lovers, yeah ...! -_- (it's a french book, i don't think it was translated, and so i'm not sure it worth give its title) Often, i find the romance just "work" because both of them are hot. I think this trope can be good, but it has to be very well written, and it's rarely the case, even in best-sellers (i don't want to tell some titles, i don't want to be burned, but some are very very famous) I have a great memory of a manga, but it's old and maybe i don't remember correctly : in Basara (Yuri Tamura), they don't know that they are ennemies at first, because they met in an unsual place. they have a crush, not rellys a true love, but like each other. And then, later, they understand who they truely are and that they are in war. I remember the development was well done, but i was much younger, i may be wrong. And i have to say this : Your embodiement of the male character was priceless ! 🤣
Omg! When I was making this video, I was trying to think of one example where I liked how enemies to lovers was executed, and Basara was the only one that came to mind! Although it’s more like lovers to enemies to lovers haha. But I was also much younger when I read it, so I don’t know if it’s as great as I remember
This makes my cry. speaking as a writer. edit: thought I'd elaborate: I think it's unnatural to jump from "enemies" to something (annoying) like "lust." It feels unnecessary and unearned. I prefer it if they slowly get to know eachother and start seeing things deeper than just some sort of sexual desire. Just make them care about each other slowly---and think about their personality! Are they stubborn? Do they have trust issues? These things can REALLY change the course of a enemies to lovers arc. But humans aren't smart enough to think of these things sometimes 💀 But in a story I've been writing recently, the two protagonists hate each other due to an even in their past as kids (they were really close friends until this event), but they had feelings in some capacity. Cerise, the female lead, is stubborn and blunt, but still is kind to others and it's evident. Seeing these things sparks Allen to remember why he liked her, and there are similar events in the converse. Another one has two characters with a little history (one bullying the other) in their past, but when fate makes them work together, they start realizing how wrong they were to assume things about the other. Just give me the juicy stuff and I'm good.
Just by hearing the characters speak, I wanted to close the video by how ridiculous and weird it was. Just the behavior of the characters, the acting was great 👍🏻.

Well said about the “rose-tinted glasses”. That’s exactly how I feel about it as well

100%, well said. Although I don’t dislike the idea of enemies to lovers trope in general, I’m yet to find a story where I liked how it was executed

@@mysteller I love the fact that we live in different countries, very far away, but still : both of us have been moved by the same manga
