- Vintage King's Dustin McLaughlin demos the latest creation from Electro-Harmonix, the MEL9 Tape Replay Machine. This incredible pedal replicates the sound of vintage tape-based keyboards used on songs like "Nights in White Satin", "Strawberry Fields Forever" and more: bit.ly/VKMEL9
I bought one today...the RUclips videos just don't do it justice. 110% Satisfied with my purchase. Worth every penny.
OMFG this room is amazing.
Thanks!
Best demo of this pedal I've seen, you actually show what you can do with it rather than how it sounds. Bravo!
beautifuldaymusic wait, what? 😂
Exit Music sounded spot on.
Thanks man!
The Force is strong with him.
1964 Sears Silvertone Twin Twelve ( in the background) was my first guitar and amp. Brings back fun memories. Bought it for $60.00.Found another cabinet and I had a full stack .Didn't need a distortion pedal. Just turned it all the way up .
Whoa. TOPS 'Way to be loved'? Never through I would see that riff played. Will be learning that tonight from this video. Stellar.
Good catch, man!
Thomas Daulton I was thinking the same thing. Lovely surprise.
Great to see a demo from someone who has actually thought about how you could use this pedal. Fantastic stuff.
Awesome pedal. As is this demo. You're showing a lot of unique ways to use it.
I love that Refused poster! I WANT!
One of the best demos I've seen. Great job, Dustin. Well planned and executed. Subscribed!
Thanks John!
Love the Twin Peaks poster
You were already a hero *before* you set a Battles loop. I’m gonna subscribe, I only hope I’m ready.
Had to go and play Bowie, didn't you? Bye, bye, two hundred bucks. Was nice knowing you. 😃
how to make a living in music?
put on a balaclava and rob banks.
It's $300 bucks.
I instantly recognized you were playing exit music as soon as I heard the first two chords, and I was quickly blown away as soon as the voice mellotron kicked in
i haven't listened to battles in a long time. Thanks for reminding me of their great music!
I love your pedal cabinet! SO colorful!
I nearly shed a tear when I heard exit music lmao, incredible demo
when it starts with TOPS you know it's gonna be good 👍
Oh man! That Silvertone was my first amp! Loved that amp! Wish I still had it…cool demo!
Such a cool pedal. Great playing and demo
Amazing demo
The strat reverb jam was too cool
Terrific job, man! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for watching!
Incredible playing! Subscribed
Damn man... TOPS
lol that battles song thrown in was great
Great demo just what I needed to hear....and the Moody Blues was perfect!!!
I'm also looking at this pedal to get the earlier Moody Blues sound. I want to capture the vibe of House of Four Doors and upward of 30 different instruments used on In Search of the Lost Chord.
hey it's the pedal guy from Motor City Guitar! I bought a few pedals from you. cool demo!
Thanks! Good to hear from you!
What is "TOPS" everyone is referring to? Thanks.
Outstanding demo.
You my Hero!!
Nights in White Satin - reason enough to buy this pedal :-)
Thanks for showing us how this pedal really sounds instead of the hyped marketing version. Almost spent another couple hundred on a pedal that is not so fabulous after all.
And does it require the EHX fabulous 9.6V power supply?
EHX have some very cool pedals. I just got the Attack Deccay, very cool stuff!
Been waiting to see some Radiohead in a demo for this! Should have done the cello of airbag too!
Nice demo!
I googled mel9 radiohead hoping this exact example would come up, amazing
Nights in white saying was stunning too
Satin*
so sick the first thing i heard in my head when i first heard this the other day was Beatles
This was a great demo.
Any chance you can share a tab for your Exit Music mellotron part?
Great demo, awesome production... but turn the heat up in that house, bro.
was that space oddity?
Man, very nice video!! Using this pedal in my pedalboard and only one amp, what output should I use? Wet? If yes, when the pedal is off, will I lose signal? Is it necessary to use alway both outputs?
Great playing by the way
Thank you very much!
Bravo 👏
Great demo man! Really shows what it can do :)
What moogerfooger do you have on your pedalboard?
Thanks! That's my beloved 104m analog delay.
Great video! I want one.
What is the B+T song? That's driving me crazy
very very cool and where did you get that Music Man amp ???
Vintage king is a music store so maybe there?
tremendo pedal amigo
awesome vid what other pedals are u using with this pedal if any ?? thx !!
Thanks! Every sound used in this video came from the Mel 9 exclusively. The only other pedal used was a Hotone Wally looper.
Great video!! Are you playing that acoustic through the amp at 1:37? And what preamp/pickup configuration do you use? it sounds great!
Hey Josh, sorry for late reply. Just the stock preamp that comes in the Taylor straight through the pedal into the amp. Thanks!
amazing playing, any compression added
Thanks so much! No compression
Que legal cara! Pude conhecer melhor este pedal. Parabéns pela qualidade do áudio e vídeo no seu canal. Abraço. :-) Aqui no Brasil não é fácil de achar este pedal.
Did I spot a Cusack kingsnake in there, next to musicman?I got one couple months ago,Great Amp!how you like?hard to find info/reviews, Great Pedal BTW!
Good eye! It's actually an old Reverend Kingsnake. As a fellow Detroiter, I absolutely love the amp, Drivetrain II and the phenolic era Reverend guitars.
Im a little confused. Does the tracking just accompany what you do on the guitar? Or can you set it to just play the tones from the pedal and not your guitar too. or does it always play the tones and your guitar at the same time?
I'm pretty sure you can do just the effect by itself. 👀🤔
Nice demo! What song riff you play in 1:06?
Hypnotized - Fleetwood Mac
That was excellent! I like the look of the pedal, but I'm not sure on how much control you have over the balance of the sound of the instrument by itself, vs. the instrument WITH the Mellotron effect, vs. the Mellotron effect by itself. Can you use a keyboard or guitar etc to play the box as if it were a Mellotron?
Hey Jonathan, so instead of having a wet / dry control, you have individual volume controls for your dry signal and wet signal thus giving you ultimate control. Thanks!
Perfect! Thanks, Dustin.
Nice Battles content!
Thanks! Nice catch ;)
Nice demo man. What amp is that you're playing through?
Music Man RD50 112 from the early 80's.
Dont know if it is possible, but it would be a amazing pedal if the sound of guitar could be muted and only the sound of the mellotron effects are heard.
Vic Oilsteems The guitar can be totally muted, total blend either way, watch some other demo videos, Bill Rupert for EHX does Great video.
Agree, the sound of clean guitar with the effect is lame.
omg i love TOPS
Wow!
Hi I have a question. Is it possible to attach the MEL9 to a Volume pedal so as to have the MEL9 sounds as
"volume swells" during an acoustic performance - does that make sense? Basically it is not to use the orchestra sounds all the time
accompanying the acoustic guitar.
Hey i was wondering what song you were playing @2:36 with the satin strings. It's sounds awesome!
Knights In White Satin by The Moody Blues. Thanks!
Vintage King “NIGHTS In White Satin”
HI! are you using nylon strings? Iam looking for something like that, I looks like it can be used with any kind of strings!! please let me know. Thanks
Good morning teacher, I feel that when I have the mel9 in use in some frets the sound is low, is it normal? Thank you 🙌
Nice keyboard too
Hello, I am from Argentina. very interested in this device. I would like to ask you a question: where Mel9 should be placed in my pedal board? inmediatly after guitar, after distortions or at the end of the sound chain? Thank you very much
I generally place it in my modulation section of pedals, so after dirt and before delay. Make sure to try it in a number of scenarios. The beauty of the "9 Series" is how it stacks with others to create completely new textures.
Le tienes mas volumen al instrumento que al sintetizador. No te oyes tio?
3 years later,- is the Musicman still the main amp? Heaviest ,but maybe best 2-"10 combo ever produced...
Absolutely! My ride or die. -Dustin
TOPS! Nice, In the video to that song mac demarco flashes a testicle.
Star wars score proper... your be the king of sound check lol
Funciona com violão cordas de nylon também?
I have a couple of questions. How do you get it to interpret what you are playing so clearly? I get strange artifacts in mine at times. Also do you have any suggestions for how to use the brass and sax settings?
Hey Jake,
For this video, I used no other effects beyond the MEL 9. In some cases, compression can help smooth things out a bit in terms of the dynamics of the pedal. There are so many variables when it comes to these things. The guitar, the amp, the player, etc...
Although this pedal is by far my favorite release of 2016, the Brass and Sax settings weren't for me, which is why I left em out of the demo. They aren't great on an actually Mellotron either. What I do love about this pedal beyond it doing an excellent job simulating a Mellotron, is the combinations you can get while blending it with other effects to create some completely new and original sounds.
Thank you so much for the reply. I'll try some compression!
They are pretty cool pedals but they have wild volume fluctuations that are extremely annoying to say the least. They released a beta version I believe.
Great =)
When you did Space Oddity did you simply play the chords and let the Mel 9 do it's string thing or did you loop one of those tracks??
Looped. The first section is looped and played over the picked part with the mel9 engaged
Excellent job. Thank you very much.
I recently purchased a mel 9 and I'm very happy happy with it. I do have a loud clicking noise however when I cut it on and off especially during well live performances. I have this problem with some other pedals as well. Does anyone have a solution keeping the pedals quiet when cutting them on and off during live performance?
Kevin Blake if u have this problem on other pedal as well, it might be the power supply on the board. Try to power the click-y pedal with a 9v battery. If theres still click sound, then your pedal maybe needs a good service job. If not, then its from your power supply, maybe.
what other pedals are you using? thank you
how's the tracking with faster playing?
Excellent!
Great demo! I saw one of these used, and after hearing a different demo, was going to pass on it, but now I think I'll get it. Hey, how would I send you a project to review and demo? I have a patent pending on a guitar accessory and would like to send you one to review and demonstrate. Please contact me.
I don't know why my comment says "project"... could have sworn I wrote "product".
Trippy pedal.
Nice video.
Do you mind telling me what looper pedal you used for the flute part?
Thanks so much! At this time, it was a Hotone Walley. I'm currently using a Boss RC-1.
Cool, thanks for answering
is the tracking fast?
What song are you playing at 3:19?
Hall of the mountain king by Edvard Grieg (part of the Peer Gynt Suite)
lol I love that he played tops
Ok, you didn’t mention all the looping.
this guy is getting booked to play nights in white satin at every prom in a 100 mile radius
Best mel9 demo on youtube! Good job!
Do you find that when playing with the knobs, the mel9 spikes up instead of gradually increasing throughout? For example, the attack has a noticeable spike in timing in certain settings.
I need one
Great repatoir! XD
Still recommend??
Huge time! My favorite of the entire 9 series. -Dustin
I'm looking for a guitar pedal that makes a convincing saxophone sound but this ain't it. The saxophone sound this one does sounds more like a synth
I was sold at "Space Odyssey".
MEL9 $200
Mellotron $2,000 to $3,000 more for vintage Mellotron keyboard
ALberto Martinez and you have to learn how to play keyboards.
I love Radiohead
