Small correction: the original Mellotron did not have tape "loops" -- instead, each key had a single strip of tape that went up and down across a head (8 seconds was all you got, because of the length of the tape strips). Made famous by the Moody Blues and King Crimson, and a must-have for any prog band. This pedal is a steal -- the original Mellotron was $4k and a pain to tour with, as it constantly broke down. . . .
I run 3 of these mounted on a stand through a little Digitech floor processor with a pedal for swells and of course to add other efx or dirt as needed. I use a A/B mix box to separate my guitar rig or blend the two via the PA. It's a sweet setup for club gigging :) (Key9/Mel9/Synth)
I just got my Mel9 today with a Key9 to go along with it. I use them both separately and together. It reminds me of The Doors, ELP, Yes. Genesis, Zeppelin, King Crimson, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, and so on. What else do you need in a simple stop box? It really does it all. If you want your guitar to blend in it does, if you don't you can set it that way too.
It's pretty cool, I have alot of issues with it maintaining dynamics across the neck, though. I've put compressors and boosters etcetera around it, they can help. It's a bit of a drag, though, when you're getting magic with it and then it belches out or drops out. It can see for miles and miles with a bit of reverb. It's recommended, but a version 2 if it ever comes to pass would hopefully improve some of it's fussiness.
This just seems like such a great tool for creativity. Also, whatever John played thru the flute setting had a very Beatles-esque sound to it. Great demo!
I have it it's geart love it sounds so good wish I had it 34 years ago so cool it fulls in so good you can do song that sounds like big bands like some of later Beatles an lot more 👍😎
Hello: I have a question, if you have it connected together with a distortion pedal, do you have to cancel the distortion or just by activating the Mel9 pedal the distortion is already canceled by the pedal itself? thanks greetings.
It depends on the sound you require. If you have a high gain amplifier, then I would put the pedal first, then connect the wet end to your DAW or a clean amp, for the orchestral sounds to come out naturally sounding, with no distortion etc. The dry end can be the rooted to a drive pedal and your high gain amp for the actual guitar sound. In this scenario the pedal is placed first so that the orchestral sounds do not get distorted. It is up to you honestly. If you want only a clean sound from both outputs (both guitar and orchestra to be clean) then you can put your amp in first and then put in the pedal afterwards, with both outputs rooted to a DAW, which will save you from having to buy two amps. It all depends on the style of music and sound you are going for.
I recently purchased a male 9 and I'm very happy with it. However I do have a problem with a clicking noise turning it on and off especially during live performances. I have this problem with a couple other pedals as well and was just wondering if anyone had a solution to this?
Kevin: If you put a noise gate in your signal path (the kind that has a seperate loop for the effects chain, with an input for the guitar and an output for the amp) the audio noise from the switch won't be amplified during silent times (when there's no guitar output). The switch noise will be present if you switch it when your playing, but it will be drowned-out by the guitar signal.
el mel9 debe ir primero en la cadena de pedales para recibir la señal limpia, y usarlo por el input normal del amplificador y NO por el LOOP DE EFECTOS.
The button switch clicks very loud on mine. Is that normal? Apparently unusable for live gigs for turning effects on and off. Could be that mine is defective?
RJ Enriquez That's a common problem in EHX pedals, it's been the case in every one I've owned. I love their effects but that can be a real deal breaker sometimes. I recommend putting your mel9 through a different effects chain, keep it on all the time and switch over to that chain with an AB box. The AB switch should let you avoid the pop sound and if you're having a volume issue you can also try fixing on that chain. Having it in a seperate chain also means you can avoid potential unecessary tone suck by having a pedal you may not use much in your main chain.
Just got one and I have to say the triggering isn't very good. The bass strings trigger better than the high strings. I'm used to 'careful' picking (I play Roland guitar synths), so it's not my playing style. Cello sounds quite good on bass guitar. I still love mellotron sounds, so I'm now saving up for a Memotron.
I was just thinking-- why doesn't he just say Mellotron? Anyone who's going to use this is going to use it for its Mellotron capabilities. Don't get me wrong. I love EHX-- bought my first EHX peak in 1979. But I don't get the deal sometimes. Life the Fripp in a Box pedal they put out in the 1980s... they used Robert's name in the advertisements but wouldn't even send him a free pedal to use. Oh well, they still put out my favorite pedals. Still have my Memory Man. Love that tank. Unfortunately I gave away my original small stone from the 70s when I was in my 20s . 😨
What a great pedal!!! However, I have bought two of them brand new, and they BOTH went tits up just after the warranty expired. Lost most of the volume, and anything above the 10th fret, forget it, it's a jumbled mess. I have used Electro-Harmonix pedals for literally decades, and this is my first major disappointment with them. Well, I'm NOT buying a third one. I'll just do without.
Mellotron. Just say it.
Everyone knows this is a Mellotron pedal. That's why we love it!

I always enjoy your demos. You're great at putting a pedal through real-world scenarios but in a fun, musical way. Also, I have to have this pedal.

This video was the final nail for me coffin up the money to buy this pedal a few hours ago.
Good line! 😉
I found myself coffin up the cash as well..
Mine arrives Monday 🙏🏼

This has successfully convinced me to keep my money 💰

Where should the mel 9 go in order next to a delay pedal
Can the vibrato or whatever be mellowed? 👀🤔
Hello: I have a question, if you have it connected together with a distortion pedal, do you have to cancel the distortion or just by activating the Mel9 pedal the distortion is already canceled by the pedal itself? thanks greetings.
hey Jon, question: should the mel 9 be the first pedal on my board, or should i be running it thru my effects loop on the amp? thx

Kevin : Male 9 ?
Which are your amp settings? My MEL9 doesn't sound as good as yours!

You can not use a classic guitar?
Can you adjust the vibrato?
No. The video rate is the sound
@@jiggersotoole7823 But then it's almost unusable. Why have they done it like this. We can all put our own effects after it, if we want to.
Check out- Neutral Earth- (full album) listen to the song “Broken Fences” Mel9 pedal is used nicely...

Haha- kind of painful watching him try to describe the pedal without saying the word "Mellotron".

Uhh dude?
sounds nothing like a sax waste of money
It's not supposed to. It should sound like a sax sound as it was on a mellotron.
