Hello old friends!
Thank you all so much for your encouraging and helpful comments and support thru my super short run a few years ago!
Looks like ~500 of you subscribed- what video can I shoot for you all to make up for lost time?
I have ideas for future channel content but I’d love to get y’all’s 2 cents!!
---------------------
What the Mel9 sounds like if you're an average dude just messing around with it.
Im going to change my shirt
New shirt.
Ross Allaire came in
There are analog Mellotrons, digital Mellotrons, Mellotron Apps, VST Mellotron plug-ins and the incredible EHX Mel9. Because you can never have too much Mellotron!
It's a great pedal for ambient loops. Awesome sounds when played through a violin. Love this pedal.
The Mel9 is polyphonic. That's why it works with chords and bending strings. Playing J.S. Bach with this pedal is amazing. EHX-- my first pedal in 1979... still pushing the envelope.
Play this along with some Steve Howe or Fripp tunes and it sounds great.
Enjoy!
Love the reactions. Out of all the EHX "9" pedals, I think this one is the coolest. You could do some great post-rock stuff with this and some reverb & delay, maybe some fuzz or muff up front. Potentially YUGE
One of the best pedal reviews I've seen in a long time. Plain and honest. Love that
It does a good job mimicking a Mellotron keyboard, and the cello sound was quite impressive too.
+1 for trying to wipe away the water ring unsuccessfully and letting me know the unit has a satisfying click.
I tried to cover all the things that are most important to me.. Satisfying clicks being a big one.
It's a good pedal for what it is and depends a lot on how it's played. Played with a synth/keyboard and only the wet signal; it sounds amazingly like the recorded/studio versions of the Mellotron we've all heard before. Again, it's what you run through it.I use mine predominantly with electric violin, either 100% wet signal or I mix it very low in the background, almost like a reverb shimmer effect (stings patch works well for this).
I will definitely admit I'm not much of a demo player because I honestly have no idea what to play. When I get a new music gadget, I pretty much just strum random things and play random strings just to try and get an idea of the gadget's dynamic range. For my next product demo videos I will have song snippets and such I will play that better suit the pedal.
Thanks for your informative comment and for visiting my channel!
Absolutely true. For electric guitars (and especially for nylon string or acoustic guitars), you need to place a really good compressor before MEL9/C9/B9/KEY9 pedals, for adding the proper balance and sustain to your tone. If you use both such guitars and electric violin through any of these pedals, you need a D.I. Box with different load settings, to accommodate the noticeable difference in instrument impedance. What a wonderful pedal MEL9 is...
Do you have any video with mel 9 on elecrtic violin please? I hesitate to buy it for my electric violin
I now a sax guy who plays his saxo into this pedal
It works GREAT on mine! I use it frequently at open mics as well as with a Prog band.
To anyone who has tracking issues with this pedal, putting it in my effects loop made a very noticeable improvement for me!
You mean you added a switcher?
Put a compressor in front of it too.
Chuck a fuzz pedal in the chain and show us how it goes with shoegaze!!
Imagine that would be so cool
I've got it too. Like the orchestra, cello, strings, flute, low and high choire most.
same as I...
I quite like the almost comedic amateur vibe to your videos. Keep it up.
Thanks! Trying to bring as much of my personality into my videos as possible. Thanks for the motivation! I need to upload more!
Flute really does have the Mellotron mojo.
Master, I feel that on the 4th string there of the 15th or 16 fret the sound drops considerably and just as it goes down to tone towards fret 12 or 10 the sound increases, is this normal in the master pedal?
Hello: I have a question, if you have it connected together with a distortion pedal, do you have to cancel the distortion or just by activating the Mel9 pedal the distortion is already canceled by the pedal itself? thanks greetings.
Is there a pedal that makes a guitar sound like a guitar?
Not many people know this, but if you press the metal switch in the middle, your guitar will go back to sounding like a guitar.
Interestingly, there's the Roland virtual guitar system where you install a hexaphonic pickup on your guitar and it triggers sampled guitars. No joke.
@@MFKitten I was literally scrolling eBay yesterday trying to find a good deal on one of these. Have you tried it??
@@ryank.creates9677 I have the roland hex pickup on a guitar with a boss floorboard thingy, and it simulates different pickup types and instruments and stuff. It's way better than I had expected, and lots of fun, but I haven't ever tried the guitar synth floorboards and stuff. The tracking based stuff is way too finnicky for me to bother dealing with, but the simulated pickups and acoustics and stuff is great.
Yes....its called wear an ass hat and play what you like. But, obviously you know that because you're an ass hat.....we have a win win.....
I'd like to hear how it copes with a strummed electro-acoustic 12 string.
Well, maybe I can answer that because the 12 string has become my favorite instrument of choice the last months. I can assure you that the sounds combined with this pedal are way beyond expectation: when you set the mix on halfway, you can get the Moody Blues sound with guitar and the famous mellotron combined into yourself, as mentioned in my comment above, it also gets you the sound of most George Harrison songs, and with a little turning of the knob presets and combined with a phaser, you can get the "reverse loop" guitar sounds as on many Beatles' songs on the Revolver album and on their song Rain....the ongoing discoveries are too far out to be mentioned in this comment alone
You can hear good use of the ehx mel9 on selections off Neutral Earth (full album) posted on utube. Also use of mellotron 400D, mini and micro as well.
Thank you, this video is really helpful 👍
You're welcome!
I own this pedal and I love it. It sounds great on electric guitar but I highly recommend it for acoustic guitars and unplugged gigs. In my opinion, it’s amazing!
How do you use a pedal unplugged?
@@布衣-l1l most "unplugged" performances are not really unplugged, rather just played on acoustic instruments
Do you have a microphone? Would love to hear what vocals sound like through this
I have it but is using it for synths not a guitar! Sounds awesome!
I like the thumb ring. Great demo bud.
Well done . Thank you.
“For some reason I thought it was going to be all mushy”
TWSS
Pretty amazing, considering it's doing it's thing in real time compared to playing back a sound file...pretty cool for the money...The drawback is, all sounds have a modulating throb, like tremolo or vibrato, which doesn't happen on my real Mellotron
You're right. The signal does need some post-processing like any type of modulation plus delay and/or reverb. But that tremolo is too much. And you cannot control it in any way. Pity...
I just got an electro harmonix 360 nano looper today and i already had an octavix and i find most of their pedals are smaller than expected the knobs are really nice and most of the push buttons are exactly like that one except it's a soft press on the looper so it doesn't click it just presses, but that's because for some functions you have to press it quickly multiple times.
How does it work? Does it pitch-track and remodel the output? I've never seen a realtime polyphonic pitch detection and sound change
yea, ehx has some bespoke pitch tracking algos that work better than anything else out there. no idea how they do it.
Does the palm muting/staccato work on all on the string sound options?
someone should use it to play smashing pumpkins, also i have a synth9 that works really well with fuzz, this would probably do the same, and like someone else said it would be great for mbv type shooegaze hehe
One thing I wish the Mel9 (and all the other pedals in this range) had is a footswitch or an input for an extrnal footswitch that could be used to switch between the different instruments. I love to create loops with the Mel9 and it would be great if I could record a cello loop, then hit a switch with my foot to change to strings and play on top of what I'd recorded with the cello setting.
What it you just put a looper pedal after it?
@@graphicnick07 that’s what I mean. I use a loop pedal after it but I wish I didn’t have to bend down and switch the instrument every time I want to change instruments
Gotta take them shoes off man. Use your toes.
There must be something out there that can do something like that
Thanks for demoing this! Cool pedal!
Is it worth 170 bucks? I can get one for that. I love strings and cello patches. My thing is there are a lot of pedals make a lot of sounds, but they are not always musical. Are the patches ‘musical’, so to speak?
Let your ears be the judge.
Did you end up getting it or something else?
Very good review.
私の購入しましたが、これほど明確にかかりません。入力がとても安定していますが、コンプレッサーとか使っていますか。
Can you get a Mellotron sound like in "2000 Light Years from home on "Their Satanic Majesties Request"? Also, how well does it track fast notes?
Check out Neutral Earth (full album) the mel9 is used along w/ Mel mini, micro and 400D. Good use of Mel9 on guitar and bass
Hey guys, could you confirm that the synth9 pedal is much more versatile in sound molding if one had to choose between this one and it?
🤔 This seems to be the more versatile pedal
of the two, with richer, more polyphonic sounds
and just a wider range in general (and I have both). A great option as well: EHX Tri-Parallel Mixer will blend multiple pedals in parallel instead of series. It depends what style you're aiming for, but the Mel 9 seems to be more of
a "classic" sound... ☮️+💜+🎶
You kinda look like Robert Fripp from King Crimson minus the afro.
...and talent
Ego lacking for sure
Fripp don't smile or laugh.
I love King Crimson, so this is a big compliment!
Thx for nice test👍 listen to the knob funktion, never heard, great ✔️
That's an amazing pedal. How long until EHX makes a damn synth? They sure have the building blocks
TROGULAR 10,000 they have one
Synth9 bruv
That is bad ass!
Just found your channel coz of Mel9 interest and I am intrigued with the wall panels behind you. Do they have hinges or are they brackets?
This is a garage, so those panels are MDF covered in fabric cut to fit the standard garage door panels!
Im debating on this or EHX Synth9...any opinions?
Both in the mail😎
I'd go for the Synth9. I think it's all up to preference though. They are both super versatile for all different styles.
Synth 9 seems a bit more modern (and slightly limited) whereas Mel 9 is more of a classic vibe... all depends on what style you're going for.
I'm trying to get a great sounding saxophone .
I had one of these over a year ago and it was awful. Poor tracking, glitchy, power switch problems and the notes tended to smear together too easily and had a hollow metallic sound to it.Which is a shame because I really wanted it to be useful and fun, it wound up being frustrating. It went back.
I wonder what happens when you “shoegaze” it
I did ask if there was a pedal that made the guitar sound like an orchestra. That is awesome. Might sound cool with the C9 organ pedal.
Would this work well with synth?
How long will the sustain continue?
Still going
Hi can it be used with An electro acustic guitar
Yes it can. Your results may vary depending on the kind of pickups you have and the kid of amp you're running through, as I BELIEVE it's mostly intended for use with an electric guitar.
what is the brand of your shirt
I love that my shirt has become a point of interest hahaha. I got it from a second hand store in Nashville I believe.. I'll look at the label when I get off work.
It was from Express
I really enjoyed this video. Lmao
I really enjoyed this comment. Lmao
what sneakers are those?
I think they were vans high tops! unfortunately, I stepped in a giant puddle of trash juice while wearing those, so they were put to rest.
I defenitely have to save money for that pedal
Instant classic
Dude...are you wearing a thumb ring?
I did up until a week ago when it broke.... Sad day.
I see you are very passionate about what other people choose to wear. why does it make you so upset though? are you a fashionista designer? I wear jeans and shirts, is that cool? I don't want to piss my girlfriend off. She sometimes gets her panties in a bunch when i don't match- whatever that means.
@Walt Coyle "I have the right to be a dumbass but choose not to."
Are you sure about that...?
Just play the damn thing!
What was that white little amp on top? You only see it for a second in the video.
sonijam
It's a Monoprice tube amp.
Is it just my Mel 9 or do they all wildly fluctuate in volume on separate notes. This pedal is extremely frustrating to record with? As far as I am concerned this is only a beta version that should not have been released to the public.
Might be speaker/amp as have trouble when I put thru a 10in spkr.Pevy Envoy
am I right people or maybe I have sour unit too/Springy esp. on Orchestra.
Please I welcome comments from all you fellow musicians assistance.
You have to make sure you run lots of volume into it. if you go directly from the guitar into the pedal and you're a very light picker, you'll get those fluctuations. Try either playing a bit more aggressively, or run some kind of boost (volume boost like an LPB1 or maybe a compressor) before the Mel9... that ought to smooth out the volume.
Neil Aspinall has
It DEFINITELY has very delicate volume sensitivity. I've found putting some kind of limiter after it can help with that. Like a compressor. And the tracking noticeably improved for me after putting it in the effects loop rather than plugging my guitar into it directly. Its still not perfect, but i am now happy with it.
sounds like if i owned it. unless your playing is killer good, its an expensive toy
"Killer good" is a state of mind, boo.
careless whisper. sax setting.
what's with the laughing?
Play I talk to the wind by King Crimson
Some of the sounds seem to need additional processing
.
Keep at it! Don't turn 'Pro', it'll kill the charm!
.
Thanks..
Obvious that the guy, although pleasant, probably can't reference where those tones have been
Most famously used (King Crimson, Beatles, early Genesis, Moody Blues). Sorry dude, The Past Matters. I have this pedal and love it. Especially strings and flute setting (you can recreate Strawberry Fields intro perfectly )
ert..what? Who are you talking too and why don't they care about the past? And who are you apologizing too? Yep, the mellotron is a classic. I think that's why they made this? are you all right? am i?? fuck!
Cool shirt
whats so funny, guy
線ふんじゃいけません。もし断線したらその場所を特定できません。きっとお金があるのでしょうが、断線した時が不都合じゃないですか。
Nice.If you like cheesy synth sounds
Ur hilarious
Yeah. Cool.
Kristopher Kinzie yeah it's aight
haha choir sounds kinda sinister x)
noisy switch..
Instead of change your shirt, change your glasses
So he can look like every other Douche Bag Slick Hipster ? Not cool enough for ya' ? Refreshing to see "the Novice approach" instead of over produced dildos looking to be discovered IMO. 65,00 views, and most comments are positive. To each his own.
Anyone else cringing at his right foot squashing that cable?
they all sound pretty much the same. i'd get my money back.
theID2 you should put your head phones on bro there completely different Instruments
@@RepukeinScapegoat ... i said "pretty much". there are small differences but nothing worth what a mel9 costs.
theID2 got mine 100 used mint in box last week love it but not for everyone, I find THE EHX MEL 9 incredibly helpful for intros and Layering also sounds good with distortions through a 4 channel patch method if u have a dedicated loop out in the head or rack depending what u use with it
@@RepukeinScapegoat .. i think our uses differ. going for distortion i'd assume you play electric. i'm an acoustic player and don't care for muddied sound
theID2 i like acoustic ASWELL ,UT WHAT YOU JUST SAID SIR IS BLASPHEMY!! Lol
ON ELECTRIC ITS REALLY FUN I THINK PRIMARILY THATS WHAT IT WAS BUILT AROUND FOR ELECTRIC PLAYERS EVEN PLAYERS THAT PLAY SOLEY ON CLEAN CHANNELS NO DISTORTION OR GAIN STAGES ECT TRY IT THROUGH A ELECTRIC.
By the way I’ve heard friends use it through pianos/ bass even electric drum set .... the mel9 through a drum set is off and everywhere sounding like dropping acid speed and shrroms and having the worse trip of your life
I put it though a PA and used my voice that was fun but hard to control since I don’t sing primarily I do backups occasionally
Хоть бы мелодию сыграл какую-то, просидел пробрынчал хрен пойми что......
Have the decency to put 'unboxing' in the title so we know it's just not worth the look.
