- A behind-the-scenes look at an Alien double feature presentation on 35 and 70mm film at the Ritz Cinema located in Randwick, Sydney.
The 35mm print of Alien was the director's cut of the film which was re-released back in the early 2000s. The print was in scope format, and 6 reels, despite the theatrical version (one minute longer than the director's cut) being 7 reels.
The 70mm print of Aliens was an original print from 1986. The print was in the flat format with an aspect ratio of 1:85:1. This print also had the infamous Dolby 6 track magnetic sound which sounded excellent.
Big thanks to the projectionists for letting me up in the booth and film this video.
Projectionist - Benjamin Olsen
Co-Projectionist - Ron Hart
Special Thanks - John Wilson
Filmed on Location - Ritz Cinema, Randwick, Sydney

I love to see a Mag 70mm print!! Great job, throughly enjoyed the video
Thanks, Kyle! Glad you enjoyed it. I love seeing a mag print too!
Cheers,
Clark
Privileged to have seen Alien on the first day of release in 1979 at NYC’s Ziegfeld in 70mm. It blew me away and still does. God, I miss the Ziegfeld. I saw so many great movies there. Never experienced a better theater.
Amazing.
Well filmed..alot of dexterity in threading up any film ! I had hoped for a little commentary at the point where screwdrivers and rollers were changed for 70mm lol ! I did work it out in the end though! Kind regards.. :)
Thanks for the comment, Paul!
Yes, the rollers were changed from 35 to 70. Thanks!
Clark
Very well filmed Clark. Your projection booth videos keep getting better and better. It looks like a 'Director's Cut' print of Alien as the sound on the monitor said 'external six track' suggesting a DTS CD. Am I right? John.
Yes that's correct, John. It was a DTS print of the directors cut. Looked very similar to the 4K disc which I was very happy about, it's made me want to upgrade by Alien Blu ray.
Cheers,
Clark
@@ClarkTeddles It's made me want to run my Director's Cut 35mm print Clark! Well done with these videos young man. Good to see you getting hundreds of views on all of them and almost 3000 on your Lawrence of Arabia one. There aren't many film collecting channels who get that many views consistently. John.
@@moviecollector5920 greatly appreciate the kind words John! I did show the two projectionists your alien 4k Review, specifically the drawing of the alien on tail or head of reel 2. They were quite chuffed by it. Cheers
@@ClarkTeddles Cor, I'd forgotten about that cartoon alien on the leader. I really should watch my own videos more often. Keep up the good work. By this time next year you could be a millionaire! John.
What kind of projector is that? Also, how long does it take to switch it out from 35 to 70mm? Where I used to work, we had a dedicated 70mm and 3, 35mm projectors. All were Simplex brand.
The projector shown in this video is a Victoria 8r which was then converted to run both 35 and 70mm. It was converted by one of the projectionists at Ritz, Jayson Richards.
Takes about 3 minutes to switch the projector from 35 to 70. all that is needed to be done is switching the rollers, aperture plate and the brass knobs on the projector.
@@ClarkTeddles Thanks for the information. :)
That isn't a curve screen anamorphic 70 mm type.
Aliens was flat in 1:85. Thus no anamorphic squeezing was necessary, nor is this screen curved, correct. Cheers
It looks great if this was at my theater in town you would have gray bars on the top and bottom of the screen like on a old tv and the sound would be so low you would be like what did they say and then fall a sleep. I quit going to the movies its not worth it since it turned digital they killed the presentation at our theaters in my town.
I agree, ever since digital the whole "presentation" part of the movies has been lost. Thats why these film screenings are always great, it feels like a very special event (which it is). Thanks for commenting
I could do everything to get the original 35mm Alien film!
Wouldn’t we all? 😂
Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
