- One of our passions is to develop student leadership. We empower student leadership teams to run our workouts independently by training them to teach their peers. Here’s a clip of our two hour session with Easley High School Leadership.
I remember my 1st year of marching band when one of the drum majors came up to me because he saw I was a new face and asked me my name and he told me his name. Simple but I still remember him :)
My section leader brought out the best in me. No one in the flute section left the band. Other sections lost member, but not us. I was really shy and unsure of myself beginning of band camp. But my section leader was so kind and I hope to become a leader like her some day
That’s how it should be
This is so true. A problem with my band is that the leaders tend to be very cliquey. I remember my first year absolutely none of the senior leaders spoke to me. (And I was fresh out of middle school and joined MB where I knew barely anyone, so obviously I was shy and scared) They stayed and talked with a certain group of people ALL the time. It was the same case the year after that and this year. I talk with seniors this year, but I haven't seen them talking with the rookies. Maybe the first day of band camp they sat with rookies, but after that, they quickly forgot about them. I love how we talked about this problem at leadership camps and meetings and leadership (mainly senior leadership) has thrown it out the window. Personally for them they might've been outgoing and confident right away, but for most rookies they're honestly a little scared. Your in an activity with a bunch if people older than you and in a different school with likely new people. When you talk to them and acknowledge them, they feel psychological safe so they'll feel safe to share ideas and contribute to the team. Senior leadership doesn't realize their cliqueness hurts the ENTIRE band.
Every section leader should hear this
Yay I'm learning more about being a leader cause I wanna be a drum major next year or my Junior year, and being a drum major means being a leader.
Yes agreed 👍 as a freshman clarinet in high school marching/concert band I cannot express enough how much it means to me personally when anyone especially one of the section leaders even checks up on me and unfortunately my section leader doesn’t really take that time with me and she only takes the time to hang out with those she likes in my section but I have an awesome drum major and flute section leader who do
Damn my section leaders never made me feel welcome
Same :( but that’s why now that I’m a leader I can make the new people welcome!
this year mine definitely are
Felt I was bullied through my rookie season 😢
A few "leaders" in my school are anything but. I'm auditioning for drum major and trying to be everything they are not.
@charmsly9506
As you should, props to you for stepping up it’s so annoying when “leaders” in sections are only leaders bc of how good they can play
My band director is an amazing man, I took a class that goes in-depth on all this kind of stuff, and he has made some of the best section leaders in the state. Great advice!
I tried out for leader ship, but I didn’t get any positions so next year is my last year to try as this is my Junior marching band year coming up I’m so stoked for the season
Oh my gosh same thing happened to me 🤞😭
Guy sounded like Dream in the first couple seconds
As a section leader I feel like I really lacked this. Will be improving on.
Thank you omg
ahh this is exACTly what band is like for me
Same! Band was the first place I really felt like I could be myself around others. I made the best of friends and found my people.
Our marching band is falling apart, yet they still do this
You can’t realistically get down to the nerd level of a new marching band member
