One of the most hauntingly beautiful rock ballads. What I love about rock music is the emotional pull of the lyrics. Hugely popular in the day! The Moody Blues.
You guys should check out videos of them from the 1970's when they were younger. They're still good as old dudes, but Justin Hayward's voice was so powerful when he was young.
Justin Hayward's voice still is. He was in 'The War of the Worlds' tour in April and still blowing them away with Forever Autumn and The Eve of the War.
Beautiful song, and a true rock classic. And yes, they are indeed old! They've been doing this song for well over forty years, and when I was in high school, most of us flute players had that bit memorized.
Fred, that guy u were asking about in the front of the orchestra is called, the conductor... he is there to regulate and direct the orchestra. The sheet music everyone in the orchestra is reading, he is reinforcing through his actions. I used to be first chair, first violin in high-school, so I'm telling u what I know from experience. Great video, made me truly miss the magic of the orchestra! Luv y'all!
Yes! The conductor, and they help keep the time, as well as cue entrances of the instruments, can also set the mood as they play by directing emphasis of certain instruments or methods of play.... In school, you're right, not many look at the conductor, but college level and professional symphonies and orchestras definitely do. It comes with more practice
All I know about Conductors, is that they lift the Orchestra. A good Maestro takes the music to another level, a bad one,, makes the performance dull, I dunno how it works. You would think there would be no need for one, but Im told its essential.
Everyone in the 70’s had this in their collection. It was epic. I was lucky enough to see them at Red Rocks Amphitheater about 20 years ago , sitting in the 3rd row and I felt like they were playing just for us. It was truly amazing. Love them. 💝💝💝

Y’all made me pull out my Moody Blues albums. This group helped get me through high school and college. Absolutely fantastic vision they had with amazing music.
I took my husband to are them in 2017, one of his all time favorite bands. He died, unexpectedly, the next year and I was so glad he got to see them perform live. They were amazing!!
Yes!! That was one of the ones I mentioned in a comment a week or so ago!! The other one from the same album is Tuesday Afternoon. As for the band looking old there. They started that band in the mid 1960's when they were your age. So when this concert was filmed they had been playing together 50 years. Personally I like the studio recordings better, but the Moodies are one of those bands that their live performances are nearly as good as the studio versions, Donald. 🙏😎
It's on their album "Days of Future Passed". It's a "concept" album. Artists would make an entire album with all the songs written around a theme. This album was about a day. It starts with a song about the morning and ends with the night....this song....Nights In White Satin. The song about the afternoon was also a big hit....."Tuesday Afternoon".
Y'all should give a listen to this entire album, Days of Future Passed. It was a masterpiece! The Moody Blues were big in the late 1960s. This album came out in 1967 and was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. It took you through the day, with each song being about a different part of the day. The songs are interspersed with poetry, which everybody at the time knew by heart. This live version was the shortened version of this song that used to play on the radio. Another hit off the same album was "Tuesday Afternoon." But to really get the full effect, you need to listen to the full album. It is amazing! This was the poem that should have followed this song: "Breathe deep, the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Pensative people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent. Entangled lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removing colors from our sight Red is gray and yellow-white, Yet we decide which is right And which is an illusion." The orchestra played behind the speaker, enhancing the images of the poem. Seriously, listen to the full album!
What a great way for youth to connect with the older generation and their time of music. Way to go you adorable young men. The future looks brighter w/you orchestrating
Thank you, thank you. One of favs there. Did you know that song was written in 1967 by one of the band members at age 19? A girl he liked gave him a gift of white satin sheets. The story says the song was of an unrequited love for her. I think the instrumentals are beautiful. I hope you liked it. And yes this band has been around a long time. Lol.
This is the short version. You need to do the original version off of the Days of Future Past album. The live version cuts off almost 5 minutes of the original. The poem at the end is AMAZING!!!!
I love when people react to this song. The Moody Blues were always playing in my house as a kid, my mom had/has the biggest crush on Justin Hayward since she was a teen. I always appreciated the how classicly beautiful it was. Mom finally got her opportunity to see Justin sing it live a few years ago :)
Justin Heywood of The Moody Blues wrote this song when he was 19 after his girlfriend gave him some satin sheets. The Moody Blues come from my home town Birmingham - the home of Black Sabbath, the Electric Light Orchestra etc etc. The very first hit The Moody Blues ever had was in the 1960's and it was called Go Now.
Every time I hear this song it takes me back to 20 years ago listening to it full blast with a group of friends, in our late teens, while we were all staying at a country cottage next to a stream in the middle of nowhere in Wales. The night was beautiful and still and the stars and the moon were shining down on us all swaying in the garden to this. Hauntingly magical ✨
The Moody Blues were definitely the greatest band from my teen years. I still have their albums. Glad you reacted to this one, it’s certainly one of the greats.
It's funny that you comment on their age. But understand that they were your age when they performed this music. Long time ago. I'm 62 and they played this at my junior high school dances. Lol
This is one of the greatest love songs of all time. Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 19! You must listen to the whole album, Days of Future Passed, especially in the dark with candles and incense, adult beverage and a little herb. It’s a concept album about the day in the life of one man… and read the lyrics. On the album at the very end of this song a cat ran through the studio crashing the tubular bells and they decided to leave the sound in cuz it’s like the end of an orgasm. The band was named after Duke Ellington’s jazz song Mood Indigo. I first heard the album at a house party my freshman year at Rutgers Univerity in NJ 1972 and have loved them ever since. They’ve had a glorious career. Sadly the drummer Graeme Edge died last year and the flautist in 2018. The two lead guitarists now play solo tours. 🥰🎸🎶🇬🇧🇺🇸

I'm Just a Singer gives a great peek at what they looked like as younger performers. And yes, they've been performing together a very long time, about 50 years at the time this was filmed. Ray Thomas (flute) and Graeme Edge (drums) have since passed, Justin Hayward (75), lead guitar & vocals, & John Lodge (76), bass, are still performing. John is on a solo tour this year.
Great musicianship. The flute and orchestra give a lot of richness to the sound. The singer's voice is more limber and soulful in the studio version. Thank you.The white satin is referring to a shiny, soft fabric. It was nice to see you both relaxing to the music.
I wish I could play the violin again, my school had budget cuts by in the early 80's. The conductor lets you know which side or instrument section to play. He/she can tell you to play lower or higher. It's like directing traffic in a sense. (that's my best understanding )
Back in the day, they were young! This was a very haunting rock ballad, one of the first. The album version shows more of their talent and vision. As most 1970's and '80's rock ballads, they ended up on movies. And worse, commercials! Our favorite make out songs and "partying" songs on TV Lifetime movies or Ads, may they burn...
Hi! Will you guys PLEASE do a reaction video to “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago. You will LOVE it!!! And check out “That Smell” by Lynyrd Skynyrd! And Amy Winehouse “Rehab” or “Back to Black”.
LIsten to the original studio version, please! It's amazing and hauntingly beautiful, full of passion. Plus, it has a beautiful poem at the end that just really completes the song - you can't say you've heard, "Nights" if you haven't listened to that version..
I’m 68 now and I’m so old I saw them live at the Isle of Wight 1970. SO glad my time on earth coincided with the greatest ever era of music in ALL genres, except rap. Less said about that the better!
I was so worried the live version wouldn't be good enough but for all that it has the differences and 'imperfections' of a live performance I think this version does still do the song justice. If you can believe it the recorded version is just a bit better but I'm glad you guys heard this song and enjoyed it!
The whole side up to this song- on Days of Future Passed- is stunning. You MUST hear it. It goes through a day from morning til night. This is Night. Tuesday Afternoon is also amazing. I used to say this series of Moody Blues albums should have come with a little tab of acid attached. They ARE very deep and visual LIKE movies. This is the end of this side.
Moody Blues often used the London Philharmonic Orchestra for their performances and recordings. One of the few (maybe only) classic rock band to do this. Yes, more Moody Blues for sure….Nights in Whites Satin” as in satin sheets!!!
He (the singer) wrote this when he was 19 years old. Music ebbs and flows. The volume gets louder and softer, how fast it is played subtly speeds up and slows down. In an orchestra, the different instruments are qued to come in. The conductor stands in front of the musicians and controls all of that.
THIS is the way The Moody Blues' music should be performed! The singer, Justin Hayward, penned "Nights in White Satin" in 1967, just before his 21st birthday! It was the final song off the album, 'Days of Future Passed,' released in October of '67. I was eight and a half when I first heard it that year and nearly 55 years later, it remains my favorite love song. I have seen The Moodies eight times since 1981 and was fortunate to attend the 50th anniversary tour of 'Days of Future and Passed' in 2018, when they performed the ENTIRE ALBUM, start to finish! The drummer, Graeme Edge, sadly passed away in November of last year (RIP). The remaining two members, Justin Hayward and John Lodge (bass, vocals) made a decision to retire the Moody Blues because Graeme Edge was the last original member. Justin and John continue to tour separately, playing the Moodies' music. The group is my 3rd favorite, after Rush and Yes.
8:00 Everyone who is playing an instrument is always looking at the guy waving his arms, the conductor, because he controls the speed, tempo, major musical queues like a gong, and the volume of the entire orchestra based on their arm movements :)

So technically speaking, it's kept me off Death Row! 😜😝😁😄
I’ve always loved this song but hearing it live…. Imma drive tonight with dis on blast. Thank you for this one guys💯
Te extended studio version is the way to go with this one
Love Moody Blues....seen them live 2 times....outdoor summer concert under the night stars...incredible!!!
Classic! That orchestra! Wow! Just gorgeous sound.
I give you guys a lot of credit. Learning about music helps you to understand people... way to go guys! This was one of my 😍
Back in the day, they were young!
The reason they look older is because they were very popular I believe starting in the 70s. I loved this song. Many memories 😃
60's
Amazingly beautiful orchestration! One of my all-time favorite instrumental song endings.
Ah, awesome memories of slow dancing to this song as a teenager! So romantic. It’s a slow song dudes!
He still sounds exactly as he did over 50 years ago ♥
Nice pick! Classic!
Oh man guys gotta listen to the studio version !
Moody Blues often used the London Philharmonic Orchestra for their performances and recordings. One of the few (maybe only) classic rock band to do this. Yes, more Moody Blues for sure….Nights in Whites Satin” as in satin sheets!!!
each album tells a complete story. this is the hours of the day. this is the end of the day, night.
This is such a beautiful gem! So smooth!
a song this intricate should be heard in the album form. the singer , Justin, wrote this when he was 17 in the mid 60's.
Best song ever! Wish they had done the spoken part at the end.
You guys need to hear the studio version with the poem at the end. It will blow your minds.
Great song.
Saw them in concert they are awesome!
He (the singer) wrote this when he was 19 years old.
Music ebbs and flows. The volume gets louder and softer, how fast it is played subtly speeds up and slows down. In an orchestra, the different instruments are qued to come in. The conductor stands in front of the musicians and controls all of that.
The studio version will give you chills
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
You are listening to a true masterpiece. Between Justin's voice, and the orchestral arrangement, it's a feast for the soul.
🤘🏽🤘🏽🔥🔥
8:00 Everyone who is playing an instrument is always looking at the guy waving his arms, the conductor, because he controls the speed, tempo, major musical queues like a gong, and the volume of the entire orchestra based on their arm movements :)
May grow old with grace and beauty and do what you love.
