- Today we're taking a look at the backlash that The Comeback King AKA The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker received when it released back in 2002 and it's defiant rise to become one of the more beloved entries in the series. Enjoy...

I got it for Christmas from one of my cousins. Plugged it in and I wanted to return it within the first 30 minutes.
She didn’t have the receipt so we couldn’t return it. So it sat in the closet for like a year and I decided to retry it and omg it’s one my all time favorites now. I cringe when I think about my past immature self.
Burning orphan jokes right out of the gate and it's still somehow endearing.
Wind Waker soundtrack is the only one ever to come remotely close to Ocarina of Time. Even though it’s known for its cheerful bright vibes it’s actually one of the deepest and darkest stories of the whole franchise. The story, lore, music, characters, companion, etc… It’s absolutely amazing and I find it to be one of the most memorable Zelda experiences of all time. I was 6 years old when it first came out.
In fairness, when I first saw the graphics they were shooting for, I was livid.
After how grim and dark Majora's Mask was, they seemed to be aiming to make a kids game. Instead, it had one of the best stories in the series and the graphics in practice were stunning.
Also, best ganondorf depiction ever.
This is a very class video mate, love it! Not enough in depth videos about this topic imo! 🙌
Thanks Adam! A little trip down memory lane is always fun
My guy you're hilarious. You also has some of the most level-headed takes out there. I'm grateful the algorithm just chose to recommend your first vid, and I'm glad I subbed. For however many weeks you plan on making new Zelda videos I'll have at least one guaranteed good Zelda video per week to watch.
I was not aware of the reception of Wind Waker, not having much access to the almost never used internet in my house... probably a good idea 😅
Even better/worse, I had no idea Wind Waker even existed until the 3rd grade (born in 1996 for context), when a friend showed it to me. Probably the best way for someone to be introduced to a game, as opposed to early internet discourse.
Wow how do you not have more subscribers. This video was great!
Windwaker is sort of like.... pure serotonin. It's amazing.
This reminds me of when I was a kid. I loved both Wind Waker and the Star Wars Prequels dearly. But then I heard how everybody hated both of them and I just couldn't figure it out. And nobody I knew personally hated either of those properties, so I was just confused. Like, "am I wrong? Am I stupid for liking this stuff? Are they bad?" It was a rough time to be a young nerd.
If you weren't there and part of the backlash (like I admittedly was) you have to understand how revolutionary 3d graphics were at the time. I was no longer playing a game, for the first time ever you could actually immerse yourself into a video game because of it's dimensional realism. We didn't play as the Hero of Time, we actually BECAME him and felt like we were a part of Hyrule. It was just a level of immersion that didn't exist until that moment. We all thought GameCube was going to take our experience and make it even more real, even more believable, and there wasn't a ton of info out there about the new game saying otherwise. We were ready to mount our horse and venture through Hyrule field again. So when Wind Waker released it felt like an absolute slap in the face. The dream of becoming even more immersed as Link was just shattered. The people that grew up with OOT could relate, age wise, but now we were late teens and this new Link was a tiny cartoon child. And forget galloping across the fields of Hyrule, it was basically a cartoon Waterworld. It was everything we didn't want, and that really wasn't fair to Wind Waker. The new Zelda game knew the limits of the GameCube and went for something timeless. It dared to be different, which admittedly is what Zelda games have always been about.
WW never really attracted me because I think of the whole sea based adventure that for some reasons did not made me want to try it
But it's true that having mostly heard bad things about it the first few times I came upon it, it really comforted me in the idea that it wasn't worth the try
Nowadays I'd like to try one day if I can, if only for the musics
See you next week
Here is my story. I played WWHD on a Wii U (emulator) and fell in love with it.
The charm, the adventure, the music, all of it!
My treasured notebook filled with islands that I need to return to was what kept me going.
I will replay it once more; but after I've played TOTK.
On another note, Your Beedle voice is spot on. Sucks you didnt say 'bye' at the end.
I remember being unhappy with the look when I first saw it back in the day. Until I actually played it, and remains one of my favourite Zelda games that this day.
“Like and subscribe if you’re a burnt orphan.”
Lord in heaven, where has RUclips taken me now?
I LOVE these vids!!! Just perfect!
I’m not a burnt orphan but I like your videos
PLEASE tell me where you get all your hoodies, they're amazing
Having grown up with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, I was probably "one of the few" who didn't hate this game initially and who didn't feel betrayed. At the time I felt so alone in loving this game when it was originally announced. Maybe I was in the perfect age bracket being 12 years at the time, maybe it was because I absolutely loved anime and animation in general. IDK, but the game got me HYPED. The game really spoke to me with it's charming and quirky style and the adventure seemed so grand! I'm happy people stopped sleeping on it, it's such a great game and still one of my favorite Zelda's to date :)
Also: BotW/TotK returning to cel shading was a nostalgia kick like nothing else for me because of WW
sometimes i feel like botw link who just played ocorina of time and falling asleep for a 100 years to play the next game and hearing everyone talking about the games that came out.
I shit you not, I had no idea that wind waker was a real game. I thought it was just a meme...
Not only is Windwaker one of my favourite Zelda games, I also consider it the quintessential video game, period. If Aliens landed on earth and asked about video games, I’d show them Windwaker. It’s got everything!
Inspired art style
Unique mechanics
Beautiful music
Subject to discussion and debate
Can be picked up and played by anyone
Pretty good game
Wishing for a switch release! I wanna play this!
And on that day we got somthing wonderful!
I love it! I played it when I was 4 and its most of what got me reading. And I took the hole commit section 😂
How you feel about the violin is how I feel about bag pipes
While everyone hated the game I was one of the few who loved the game
All i remember is everyone loving it 🎉
This was my first Zelda game when it came out on the Wii U. I vividly remind showing it to my best friend who hated it because she thought Link from Twilight Prince was hotter (we were like 8 or something).
Still one of my favorite games of all time though. Links expressions and just the overall game mechanics of sailing makes me happy. If I'm having a bad day, all I needa do it play the soundtrack :)
I like to make something to eat while im out sailing in the ocean.
8:47 yea bro that was cap 😭
I liked WW so much until the triforce search, i stopped playing because I didnt know what to do
Thank you being so kind help me and these people to better understand you God amen
I love your vids and want more!!!
Nah I forgot
I forgor
He forgor 💀
I still love the wind waker and it was my first Zelda game and beat it this game does not deserve any hate
I love the ww artstyle, but the game is so boring, I tried to enjoy it but it provides absolutely no challenge, propably should've played it before ocarina of time and majoras mask, I heard a phrase about it once that I did like though which was "the game that ruined the zelda series until people realized it was actually kind of good"
Still one of my all time favorite Zelda games. This is a great reminder: Never let the crowd dictate your willingness to play a game. Excellent video, Zink 😎
Hey, I missed your signature "bYyYye!" I'll be the first to admit that back in the day I used to call WW, "Wind Wacker"... I went a whole year before playing the game, after a friend highly recommended I at least try. Best decision ever!!! I have to say I'm torn between WW/OoT/MM/and ALttP (my first) for best Zelda game. Depends on the day and how I'm feeling.
GIBS SPACEWORLD 2000 ZELDA STILL WAITING 24 YEARS LATER REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I'm 100% sure TotK will be a fantastic game, but it was a bit drab that they didn't take a risk and change the art style from BotW as they usually do. Hopefully Nintendo will bring on more Cartoony Zelda, Hand drawn Zelda, Claymation Zelda, Paper Zelda or Pixel Zelda etc. in the future. At least for the "in between Zelda games".
Btw. it was so annoying that the whole graphics whine thing repeated on a smaller scale with the Link's Awakening remaster. If you'd ask me Wind Waker HD and the Link's Awakening remaster are some of the best looking 3D games (as in 3D graphics) ever made. Of course it's understandable that some people enjoy more "realistic" looking games and some a more abstract cartoon world.
They've tried to do something in between in both skyward sword and BotW, but the graphic style doesn't necessarily end up quite as iconic meeting half ways. I wish they'd just have a "toon graphics" toggle button in the settings of all future Zelda games! That way they would make everyone happy. ; P
Even though I considered Wind Waker my least favorite 3D Zelda for years because of the sailing and triforce hunt, it’s still the game I’ve replayed the most. And after WWHD came out, its a masterpiece.
Btw stop gatekeeping where you get your clothes and posters 😭
PLZ I NEED THAT HOODIE FR
Is this dude anywhere on social media ?
Music slaps in this game
I loved the art style for Wind Waker. It still looks good to this day because of it. Meanwhile something like Twilight Princess, which is still a great game, has aged very poorly visually despite it coming out after. Also Toon Link has the best expressions lol
I think the "Majoras Mask" facial expressions statement was an ironic joke. Facial expressions... Mask... i dunno. 🤷♂️

can’t wait for the next
When WW came out I was 8 and I liked the look of the game, to me it was better than MM's style because it was a more lighthearted game by comparison. Not that I'm knocking MM, I know it's become a cult classic among many Zelda fans and even I've gone back and given it another chance now that I'm older. But at the time, WW to me was the better of those two 3D games.
I mean it was much better than skyward sword.
I've never hated this game.
This game is beautiful.
Is that hoody embroidered?? That's sick
Welp, that zoom in cleared that up! Where can I get one? Can't find it
Hmm maybe today I will play WWHD
What an intro 😂
I still do
8:37 or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Gone Wild
Deep bruh
Actually, Wind Waker is a little Kiddie Game for Kids, real Zelda Elitist play Zelda II.
Wind Waker sucks.
Wind Waker is tight 🚬🗿
oh i'm early
Still hate it. It's just not good enough.
"People who have nothing to offer...." you mean activists?
Just to be clear, its a fiddle. Not a violin.
Can someone link me to that amazing hoodie he is wearing
