Bringing plants to the sink for watering is really nice! Everything can drain. There's no excess water left in the cover pot. No mess of water on shelves and floors etc. I love it. 🙏

Grab a bucket and wire baking shelf I take it around with me pop about 7 small baby's on the at once and water though and the big boys sit on there for a few mins. I love this because I can reuse the fertiliser usually once and then the garden plants get it. Works super well.

I do this too! So much easier to know I saturated the whole pot! It may be a little more work moving all of them, but worth it to me!

I know that I usually go through 1-2 burnouts a year generally speaking and that's why I've made sure my collection can take on a bout of deppresion lol. 3 years in and I know which plants are tough as nails. Then for the plants that arent, I have them in self watering containors or semi-hydro so they can last just as long as my soil plants through the famines. It really does suck when you're sitting there desperately wanting to take care of your plants, but cant bring the energy to do so. That feeling when you look at your favorite and feel nothing also stings like crazy.
That feeling when you snap back and it all comes alive though is always so refreshing, that's when my collections get their huge facelifts, the repotting is done, plants moved and re-organized, cuttings taken, cuttings potted up, fertilizing. Then all the plants respond and start growing, omg its the best.

      @lydia5286 5 месяцев назад

I go thro similar cycles! My collection is pretty curated for drought-tolerance at this point. Some favorite genera are Epipremnum/pothos, Hoya, Cerepegia/SOH, and some Philos! I love the aesthetic and vibe of monsteras but they don’t do well with me with the soil mix I use. I’m looking forward to experimenting with different media this year: leca, spag, and other semi hydro!

I use the free version of planta. I have about 200 plants. I customize the frequency of watering my plants so it reminds me to water and I upload notes and pictures when I repot. It also logs when a plant dies. I like it a lot. The worst thing about it is that sometimes if you're searching for an uncommon plant, it can't find it. I'll just log it as something similar. And also I Love this vlog style video! It allows me to hang out with you but also get my chores done. Win/win 🎉💚🌿

Buying a large pop up grow tent is a game changer.
Put in a small heater on a thermostat with a 2” base of pebbles and small clip on fan for circulation.
It’s turned into a happy self sustaining jungle… way less stress!❤
I liked it so much added a water feature, fairy light and a nice chair. Just noticed two tiny lizards moved in as well.

Also I regroup the same plants together (Hoyas, Alocasia cactus etc), it makes it easier to check and fun to compare, it makes a nice arrangement per room and or shelves
This was a big game changer for me, it truly makes life so much easier
Also I take one day a month to repot, I noted while watering the ones that needed a repot so the day vines a have a list and the day goes well
Hope all this helps, you’re doing amazing with your videos but your mental health and human relationships are the most important

The less STRESS the better ! Indoor plants are ment to relax you, and we're all going to be dead soon so we may aswell enjoy them.
I use a Paint pen to write info and dates on the plastic pots. Also for photos, you can put them in individual files on your phone. It might help you to get a clip on microphone aswell.
Less stress, enjoy them ! ❤💚❤

I saw this suggestion from someone who does gardening outside but thought it might help you create less overwhelm too. She would divide her garden up into say five sections and then assign each section a day. That way, when she is doing her garden maintenance and notices something that needs attention, she doesn’t feel like she has to get to it right at that moment because she knows she will touch it on this specific day. (I was reminded of this when you were talking about going through your entire plant collection each morning with your coffee)

i made a spreadsheet in the apple numbers app sometime in the summer and it’s been life changing!! i’ve gotten insanely detailed with it at this point but it was bc planta never checked all my boxes. it was easier and more fun to do it myself, everything being accessible from all of my stuff so i can work on on it whenever. EXTREMELYYYY helpful

Fern, I love your videos! I look forward to them and I’m glad you touched on this topic today! I’ve been feeling a little underwhelmed with my plants lately and one thing I decided to do instead of bringing in more plants, is to get cute pots for all the one I already have. I feel like giving them a cute home makes me appreciate the plant itself even more!

    Hey fern
I have over 360 plants, I made an excel sheet, name, date purchased, soil used, date repot, light and watering requirements, comments and so much more info so now I can filter what ever I need, love it
As for making your area for soils I use 5 gal bucket with lids, one bucket for each (bark small bark med perlite etc and I also make one bucket each each of my homemade soils(tropical cactus aroid and Hoya) do when I need to repot my soil is already mix’s up, so easy when your in the repot day,
I also make 10 moss poles in one sitting so when I need to extend it’s easy
Always prepare and it makes work fun and easier
I live in Ottawa so I usually make soil and poles while I watch your videos
Hope 2024 brings you happiness and good health

This is why I’m transferring all my plants to leca. Watering is so easy and clean and when I’m out of town which is a lot, it’s easier to have someone else simply check the water reservoir. I’ve decided that if a plant can’t do well in leca, it just isn’t a plant for me.

I love so many things about this video. I love the idea of keeping a running list of who needs to be repotted and then doing it all on the same day (or weekend!). And same with moss pole maintenance. Because every time I sit down to repot I can never remember who needs repotting or maintenance! I might just keep a post it on my desk with a list.

As always, appreciating your thoughtful content. Plants give me so much joy and watching them, esp. my hoyas, grow and bloom, has been rewarding/ therapeutic. I use masking tape to label cover pots when I replace the osmocote fertilizer. I have a weekly planner)week on left side, notes on right side) dedicated solely to plants. This is where I note plant purchases, repottings, and other notes(incl.when I give them away or toss them). Since it's winter, I can now get away with watering most plants once a week. In 2023, I focused on grow lights and trellises and not being a helicopter parent i.e. not overwatering. The results have been rewarding. Looking ahead to 2024, I'd like to see larger hoyas and more hoya blooms. Philodendrons, monstera, and alocasias have been banned from my home for a few years and have decreased pest pressures and my stress levels. 🙂

I can totally relate. You mentioned being interested in seeing or hearing about what others do to keep track of their plants. I have a spreadsheet that I could share with you if you want. I am still adding to it as I go and figuring out ways to improve it, but so far it has really helped me organize and keep track of my large collection of succulents. As well as pots, I like plastic pots, but ceramic gives a wider variety when you’re planting in all white. I just like the clean look of white. If you use all different colors and patterns they get all mixed up and then none of them stand out against the others. With white I feel it allows the plant to be the star and shine.

Omg this video so came at the right time!! I was feeling exactly the way you were about my plant collection. It is not nearly the size of yours. I never know when I watered last hardly ever fertilize or treat for pest regularly. Ever the dislike for terra cotta pots and like of the plastic.
I am starting my schedule routines tonight on my entire life. I have felt so confused and lost the last year and I feel this is what I need. Thank you so so much for this video today!!❤😊

I take care of plants in business’ for a living and also have a large plant collection at home, and man, plant burnout is REAL😅 Currently looking for a new job because I miss being excited about my plants at home!!

I never thought about setting up moss poles for the long term. Definitely want to do that this late spring. Our temps stay around 15-30°F til about mid April.
I think curation is key to a hobby like plants. There are just TOO many to want them all, so being selective about the ones that bring a smile to your face vs frustration is super important.
I have the subscription version of planta, and though I struggle to keep up with it, I enjoy it.

I can definitely relate to being overwhelmed by the maintenance of all my plants. When there seems to be so much to do for my plants on top of daily human activities I tend to procrastinate a lot. For me it's helped for me to switch most of my indoor plants to semi hydro. The plants can water themselves as they need and u can just water em when u can.

Yesss! Semi hydro saves lives 🙌 I’d like to get more of mine into it as well

I finally got time to watch! I was doing plant “chores” while watching. I hate calling it chores because that makes it seem like work. While I find it very enjoyable to take care of my plants.

This video is so relavent to me right now. I'm heading into my 5th year with around 50 plants, and it's starting to lose its sparkle, so these tips are helpful!
Also, I like the chatty videos. I watch them in the morning when getting ready for the day, etc. Ps your hair looks so long, 👌

I liked your last video, I can feel your confusion. Over the holidays I was so overwhelmed with visiting family and friends yet knowing my plants needed water. At 76 I was very overwhelmed I started to think why do I have all these plants. I have orchids, succulents and lately houseplants. I had to think of what needed water first. I put my small houseplants on shelf at kitchen sink.
I have app Gregg - it sends reminder messages on phone. Can add pictures and also last watered.
I love my plants and look for new growth, leaves and new shoots
Hang in there, take deep breath. Do a section at a time, think they’re new plants and are lovely ❤
You’ll grow and your plants will too, be you

I use planta app, and I absolutely love it. I love being prompted to water which plant with the option to hold or snooze for up to a week. Since I fertilize every time I water, I turn off the fertilizer notice. I love the updates but I haven’t found a way to put in other updates except when prompted. I need to get used to taking a picture as well as written notes. It’s far worth the price, free.

I have been using Planta for a couple of years now. They keep improving and IMHO the best plant app that I have tried. Is it 100% no, but it's very very useful. With my scatter brain, it really helps me stay on track. Always remember even when using an app always check your soil even if an app says it needs watering.

Hi Fern! to keep track of what I do plant wise I use a spread sheet file. I keep different files for different years and then a tab for each month. in rows I keep plant names organized by genera or type if I don't have multiple plants of that genera (eg succulents), and in column I keep days. I don't write that much because I figured some short words or letters to reference something that happened or something I did (eg X means that I watered the plant, W means that I showered it, PT means pest thrips, PM means pest mealybugs and so on). You could give it a go if the app you want to try doesn't work out well for you. 💚

Happy new year!.. have you considered a planted fish tank? I'm doing that right now with a 10 gallon.. it's a nice little hobby, you get to enjoy aquatic plants and cute fish, you can also root plants easily hanging in the tank. Natural aquariums are very pretty ❤

LOVE the wisdom bomb from Fern. Less overwhelm, more joy. ❤ Yes please!!
I don’t think there’s any limit on the free version of Planta. I’ve been using it since I started with plants and I don’t do a lot of updates but I do have 160 plants logged on it.

    • @Planty-Mandy

My tips for Planta - play around with the pot type and pot size to get watering schedule closer to actual. I haven’t found any of the other settings very helpful for this. If it’s still way off, create a custom schedule on that plant. You can use the locations however you like, so for instance I make one location named “succulents” so I can easily find all the plants of that group to water them all together and check them off on the app rather than try and remember all their names to search for them.

A quick job is better then neclect... yes!!! I always want to do the best job, but then I get overwhelmed very easely... and that's a bad combination.
