Fern I love how you are not afraid to do all of these remodeling projects on your own. My mom was inspiring to me when I was younger she always did that herself. However, it never wore off on me! 😂 I never would have the confidence to put up a shelf or the lights. I think your setup looks great! I really love the monkey tail and sunflower picture they are my favorite. Good job!

The new planty corner looks great! You did exactly what I was thinking with the gloriosum. And the polyneura was icing on the cake! I really think that if you want a long/full monkey tail cactus, I’d cut off all tails into individual pieces and put them all together in a pot. Maybe that would encourage growth in length, rather than branching off! ❤ good luck!

Wow you did a really great job, and definitely you earned them breaks. Love your sheet set to. FYI I stared using clear double sided tape instead of holes in the wall, unless it's really heavy, I promise you your going to love it and be careful it's really strong.

I’ve found when you water regularly with the monkey and rat tail it keeps them thick. Well draining soil, bottom watering, and bright indirect light.

Ugh I feel you on the monkey tail cactus. I tried so many times. I live in New England and it also gets dark and cold here in the winter. It definitely is very picky about its conditions. I could only ever get skinny icky new growth no matter what I did with it. I think it just needs very consistent high light and water. I think whoever said treat it like a tropical plant was right. Hopefully it enjoys being directly under the grow light!
we are very much alike not just in terms of love for plants but I also love to diy. I am not afraid of doing things on my own. the only time I ask for help is if they are heavy so I call in my hubby for help.

that corner where you have your gloriosum try putting a ladder shelf that's medium size so you can maximize the square footage and utilize the light that is there just a thought. also maybe putting away the books where the office table is.

Fern, new subscriber here. I want to let you know that I checked out the Brooklinen sheets. I must say, girl, you have wonderful taste. I 💗, ❤, 💖 percale sheets! The only kind I will buy. I love the crisp and cool feel of percale. They take me back to my childhood when sheets were dried outside on the clothesline and ironed (😲). That wonderful smell of freshness and the outdoors!! I just might have to induldge myself. 🤗
I actually just learned that monkey tail cacti are jungle cacti! What you heard is correct! 😊
I live in Wisconsin and have mine outside all spring and summer and bring it inside for fall and winter. I haven’t watered mine since bringing it in in the fall and have it in a low light area. Mine hasn’t grown much this winter. It is possible to make them go semi dormant in the winter. Orchid cacti actually require “dormancy” in the winter to flower well in the summer.
My dining room needed some life but it’s so dark. Since my walls are light gray, I chose the white soltech with their archetto mount. It blends in seamlessly against wall, especially since our ceilings are very high and a black cord would stand out so much.

Hi Fern. The Monkey's Tail and Rat's Tail cacti are tropical cacti and no they don't go dormant. I cut back on watering in the Winter as it's not the growing season. I have the Rat's Tail and am growing in the NE USA. Mine also gets thin growth at the ends. It's in a South facing window. Hope this helps.

I love doing planty refreshing whether it's adding a new growlight or a new shelf or even moving plants around, it gets me excited over my plants. I think your polyneura will enjoy more light. I have one since this summer and she's already blooming and she's under one of my pendant lights about 3 feet away. Love your setup. We are so lucky that our partners are so patient with us😅
Love your funky monkey tail! Mine is spawning the narrow spirals but I think that is the way it grows. It gets fatter later. It has not lacked for water or light. I am from Michigan so we are not too far from each other, just different countries.
Im not trying to be petty here! But I am pretty sure fern lives in British Columbia which is very far away from Michigan. Unless she moved to Toronto I have no idea.

Maybe some large-scale, planty art over the bed? I have a triptych of abstract banana leaf prints over m y bed. It kind of continues the headboard space up closer to the ceiling.

So pretty 😍 I love doing things like this. I recently bought wood and shelf brackets to make my own shelves for plants 😅 and it’s time consuming for sure but worth it. I’m also going to use some branches I got to hang from the ceiling to hang some of my hanging plants 🌱
Maybe above the bed a lit branch. I bought one off of Temu I believe. It’s soooo pretty and decent sized. I love the planty vibe with lights. It’s my weakness 😅

Fern I think you missed some step in the wintering. Just because you have stunted growth. You are supposed to not have any growth at all. Yeah as you pointed in the video the temperature should have been lower like around 10 °C which is not beating around the bush maybe outside in a cold greenhouse. I think that chopping the monkey tail cactus will be a blessing if you cut all the thin part at the top and rooting again the good one
I've looked it up, and apparantly, the moneky tail cactus grows on rocks beneath the Bolivian jungle. I gues that means it's a tropical cactus.

I think you did it right. The Monkey Tail is supposed to be dormant and is a desert cactus.
The Rat Tail is a Rhipsalis.

I just googled the monkey tail cactus because I thought it had to be easy to find out at least where it was from. Turns out there is a Wikipedia article for it but only in German: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleistocactus_colademononis
It says that it only grows on one specific mountain in Bolivia, below 1500m in humid climate. But also, it's apparently first described only in 2003, so maybe it still shows up at other places. But that does sound like it's tropical.

That’s so funny about you switching sides with your bf because I’ve been wanting to switch sides of the bed with my husband for months now. His side is close to a huge window and all of my plants are on that side in and around the window. And when the sun shines into the window in the afternoon I will go sit on his side of the bed and read a book while I bask in the sun like a reptile on a rock 😂 the only reason I’m on the opposite end of the bed is because I’ve had this weird thing about being furthest from the door incase someone broke in, like it’s a legit fear of mine and it’s always been that way. But I’m not really scared anymore, like I’m more drawn to being closest to the window than I am about being away from the door! Anyways, your room is looking amazing Fern! And always love your content 💕

Also, you should consider starting your tortum over again, on a moss pole. They grow similar to your philodendron narrow on a pole. Much more compact. I think you’ll be much happier. You influenced me to get one about a year ago. 😂😂
