Every time my zebrina behaves like that I just trim the leggy start, cut off the roots, and soil prop. Sooo easy, they grow roots so well in the dirt. I’ve never even considered water propping them 😂
The room looks great! A piece of unsolicited advice: you might want to raise the mattress unto a slatted frame so air can circulate underneath. Otherwise you run a high risk of getting mold.
I have a futon mattress on the floor and just have a tatami matt under it. It's very humid here in summer and I've had no issues. (I've had this set up for about 4 years now,)
Those 2 Tradescantia are 2 different types,I had both types growing next to each other outdoors in the ground, yes they love light! I did also learn that the growers use a chemical that makes the internodes grow closer together, but wears out in about 6 months and then grows leggy, I don’t know?? Undeniably they are so pretty! 💚🪴
I was given a Zebrina that was almost all purple, just like Ross's is looking like now, but since I grew it, it turned striby. Mine came from a pretty dark place, and I grow it in a west faced window, so I am convinced thatit comes down to the amount of light. 😊
The Zebrina turns purple depending on a few factors. Light, water, and nutrition. Tradescantia Zebrina. Also known as Purple inch plant the in the US, or Silver inch plant in the UK, develops purple backs to the leaves depending on how much light the plant develops. However, depending on their dryness or nutrition level, the plant can develop purple fronts as well. In that zebrinas case, it looks quite dehydrated, which is why the front has turned purple instead of only the back. I mean, it could just be stress from moving, but from my understanding of growing this plant, it may be one of those three.
That is absolutely brilliant! You built a love loft! ❤ For the tradescantia in the future, it props super easy in soil so anytime mine are getting leggy I just chop them and stick the pieces back into the pot. That way you can keep it nice and thick. It tends to get very scraggly without doing this every once in a while.
I have tradescantia in different parts of the house, they’re all cuttings coming from the same plant. The lighting makes them change colour: ‘too much’ light makes them more purple, just right it turns silver and too little it turns greenish. They grow on the jungle floor and normally root at the points where the stem makes an angle. When they can’t root they start to shed leaves at the top to save energy. Just take cuttings and pop them in at the top or circle your plant on top of the soil and pin it down so it can root naturally.
Claire!!!!!! This is GORGEOUS!!! You and Ross did so well! 👏🏻❤ Enjoy the transition! I moved in with my partner in April after nearly 12 years of single motherhood! it’s a lot to navigate, mentally! Love!
Oooooo! Amazing!!! Looks so cozy and look at all that space for activities 😁 Should totally get smart light bulbs for the bed loft, could set the mood for movies and other activities 😏😂💚💚
Ross really is a natural with plants. His Calathea Ornata is just gorgeous. What is his secret??? Love how you created more space in the bedroom. Looks amazing!!!! Both of you are very clever. Great video!!! 💗💗💗
Yay! It looks so great! I love everything about it and I really love the light projecting onto the ceiling above the bed! I don't know if in real life it does this, but it looks like it would really "lift" the ceiling and make it not feel so enclosed. Love it!! The color change on the tradescantia zebrina is from more sunlight. When mine goes outside for the summer, it entirely turns that color...and eventually blooms the most adorable pinky purple flowers (they only last for a day so enjoy them but often times you'll get repeat blooms from the same spot...new bloom each day but from the same spot, if that makes sense). The leaf drop could be from the move but they'll do it with time anyway. The best way to keep them looking good is to occasionally chop and prop to get rid of the leggy spots where leaves dropped.
Turned out great Claire and Ross, well done looking good. Loving the star projector to make it all cosy up there, one of my favourite tech purchases too! Just don't sit up quickly in bed!
Share where you got that amazing galaxy maker night light thingy! Love it! I have glow in the dark stars all over my ceiling and this added would be awesome! Thanks!
Regarding the zebrina, there is a variety called Purple Joy. That could be what Ross's is. There is another purple variety called Purple Heart (I believe). You should both be so, so proud of what you have achieved in the bedroom, it looks absolutely amazing. I love the cozy mezzanine nest 😍😍😍
My zebrina tradscantia turned purple because it is in full sun in a south facing window. From what I’ve researched, it’s actually sunburned! The ones I have in other rooms are not that way…. She keeps growing though, just fine so I just keep enjoying my purple plant!
When you repot Ross’s existing zebrina, you can just use a chopstick and make holes to pop in the unrooted stems they will be fine. Your sky projection over your bed is incredible 💕 Your platform bed certainly gave you a huge increase in space, love it 😀🇨🇦
Hi Claire love the room looking fab and Ross seems really lovely funny crazy if you get what I am saying it’s so nice you Shair the same interest with the plants hope to see more updates with the development of the room great so far. All you need now is get a nice new dog bed and that would finish the room of nicely.
You built a loft! I’m impressed. Ross is so funny. He reminds me of Dick Van Dyke, which makes you MTM?! Oh and his plant shelf is a great little separation wall. I would have picked white but black looks so much better. Congrats to you guys!
This is absolutely amazing change! You have made it! Congratulations! Tradescantia zebrina has different cultivars, so I would say you have two different ones. Pink Paradise for example is more purple.
Tradescantia - i plant them in long rectangular pots and very close to one another. I do trim them to get that bushy appearance and to avoid leggy stems and brown leaves. Propagating in soil directly to the same pot. My tradescantias are giants 😂. On direct light they become more vibrant in color. I do like them dark purple so indirect light.
The colour on the tradescantia is just due to the differences in sun. It gets super pink in one room in my place and super stripey in another. They can get very leggy, so I just tip prop them every so often to keep them cute and shrubby.
Re. Zebrina: Actually all plants with a purple back have a lovely way to communicate their need for light. In this case, the purple Zebrina is asking for more light. I wouldn't repot them together just yet, as the purple one may need more gradual exposure to light. Conversely, when purple plants loose their purple back, it's because they are overexposed to light.
I actually find it to be the opposite. Personally, When I place my zebrina in a high light position, including direct light, their undersides actually become *more* purple (I had one of my zebrinas become such a deep purple that it was bordering on black at one point) I also find that purple on the front of the leaves seems to be a form of stress where they're trying to block out light and not a sign of health. I've had my left-too-long water props of zebrina turn purple on the front, I've had my dehydrated zebrinas turn purple on the front, but I have yet to have a well-cared for zebrina turn purple in the front.
@@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 I agree with you on purple fronts being a sign of stress. I cannot speak to your precise situation, since I've never put a Zeberina in direct sunlight. I believe the issue here might be words like "too much" or "too little" are subjective. If we set up from the premise that plants' natural environment is outdoors, and most indoor plants don't receive the same amount of light as they do in their natural habitat, I'm more inclined to say this plant might not have been receiving enough light, considering it was in an office. But I think you have a valid point. Claire may have to ask further questions to determine its previous light conditions to make the proper gradual adjustments.
@@Anil18834 I'm... not too sure I understand what you mean by "too much" or "too little" being subjective. Do you mean that in terms of care and the overall adjustment period? Because if that's the case, it would make sense that the plant has turned purple due to shock as the purple tradescantia had been grown in low light conditions whilst with Ross, as most of his plants were due to his lighting conditions. However, at the same time, I don't think the zebrina is asking for more light from Claire as her house is rather bright compared to many houses. I think it may be the zebrina being taken into too much light too quickly, or it's a watering issue (I say watering as the leaf death on the plant seems rather sudden with no visible yellowing on the living leaves)
What a beautiful transformation! Great job!!! Yall created a whole loft!! This is such a clever way to create space. I now have to measure my ceilings to see if i can do this! I don't even have anyone moving in but i want it anyway 😂😂
Great idea to increase space. and basically creates a new room May not work so well in my country as we have earthquakes, so it would need bracing. and bolting to wall probably. My Zebrina also went purple, but I think it does that when it is stressed and dried out, and perhaps the lighting wasn't idea. They grow as weeds in my country NZ, so very easy to grow.
You created a loft! How cool is that!? Wow! Makes me wish for higher ceilings so I could do it! Good job guys! Been looking forward to the reveal! Bravo! (Spanish attaboy for your Spanish loft! Wink wink)
Your new loft bed area is fantastic! Great way to make space. We have done that in one of our rooms, (built it right in though), and it's a game changer for sure...
Whoa, what you've done with the room and the bed is absolutely brilliant! Also, the fact that Ross has kept the Calathea Ornata (Freddy) alive and thriving is blowing my mind; I've killed 3 and given up on them but it's such a gorgeous plant. Your guy's room just looks amazing so far ✨
hey, the reason it went all purple is from bright light. In the winter here in New England in the U.S. when mine is inside it gets lower light and gets the silver stripes. In the summer when I put it outside into bright direct sun it goes all purple.
Looks amazing. Love that flooring idea, genius. You can pot TZ straight into soil. Thats what I do, cut and pop in same pot to get it bushier. Im also in agreement that the dark colour came from lack of light.
When I first saw this, I went to the fridge and grabbed two beers so I wouldn't need to get more. I guess to much work for the two of you? and one question, where will Yoli sleep? I did enjoy this as always!

Honestly I have a Zebrina that started from a single stem cutting, rooted it in water initially, but from there I’ve just been cutting it gradually and just plotting it the same pot to soil propagate it.. just poke a hole with chop stick and in you go .. it’s been working fine
Amazing - so much work went into this. Huge payoff. Loved the process and the fact that you two took us along for the ride. Ross, I want pizza now too 😂
OMG what a great video!!! Love the new space you made in your room. Wow, that bed looks very inviting. What is the light that is lighting up the ceiling? So cool.

My mattress was on the ground for over 15 yrs and it was totally fine.
Really? 😮 I have mine on the floor I never even thought about this. I'll have to check under it. 😬

yes i agree, i have one in more shaded spot and it’s more purple but the one in a brighter spot has much more silver with it.
Mine was getting to much light and leaves had a bleached looking color
100% agree here but also… just hack those old roots off and water root it with the rest it grows like a weed so you’ll have roots in no time!

@@MT-sm5nk just standard potting mix with added perlite. You may not be giving them enough light?
I think Ross should start a DIY channel.
Like a giant bunk-bed that, in effect, makes a whole second floor? That is the type of diy inspo I crave.
Zebrina turns pink when it grows in direct light. It's like plant "tan". It propagates very easily in soil.
I love how proud Ross seems to be about his new corner 🤩 it's a beautiful, inspiring spot ❤
