  • What happens to your mental health if you reduce or quit social media?
It's been 18 months since I quit using all social media. I’ve been reflecting on where I think social media use fits within discussions about perinatal mental health.
I invite you to ask yourself - where does social media use fit within your overall concept of your mental health? AND, we could go a step further and ask - where does social media use fit within how you maintain optimal mental health?
    I'll share 4 insights I've noticed since I quit
If you're new here, welcome! I'm Erin, a slow living psychologist. I create videos about mental health through minimalism and slow living. I've had burnout twice! In 2021 I experimented with detoxing from social media to see if it would help my stress. The results were astounding and I've never looked back. Living a life where I am being rather than always doing is a work in progress for me. In my videos I aim to show not just tell you how to slow down and look after your mental health. You'll see my bush property, my animals, inspiration for slow living with young kids, and my passion for maternal mental health.

"I thought we were better friends than they thought we were ." Is the story of my life. Aha also 'Disenfranchised grief ' YES! Finally someone put a label on it. 😅 I've been trying to find the words to describe the feeling and this is spot on! 🙏🏻

This is one of the more thoughtful reflections I've found on the RUclipss -- thank you! Pulling the IG/FB plug today because as my wife asked me last week is this really moving the needle? And it's not. Not only is it not moving the needle but it is creating anxiety, and I'm not showing up for my family the way that I want to. I'm realizing that I'm actually powerless in the face of social media

I absolutely love this! I've been feeling all of these things. You're spot on with your observations.

I hardly use facebook (the course I'm taking communicates via their facebook page but that's all academic info), don't now how to use twitter (I'm not dumb but I honestly can't work out how to tweet!), never did instagram, Pinterest or tik tok. I use RUclips a lot though, mainly watching videos about mindfulness, breathe work etc or old fashioned classic movies - because I can't stand most of the smutty, violent, 'reality' trash on the infinite number of channels these days! I still experience depression, stress, frustration, and have ADHD so my natural tendency is to avoid all the anxiety, attention shattering noise of almost all social media platforms. If I interacted with social media as much as most people typically do, I would be in a straight jacket. I wouldn't be surprised if NOT being on social media becomes the next big thing... That said, I'm about to start an ADHD coaching course and am very interested in how to build a new coaching business without using social media, which Cal Newport assures us is possible, so bring it on!
