jeeze i can't believe the haters of this vid. It's pretty awesome to see young engineers at work. Scetching up designes, fabricating the parts, getting into the tuning software to set the fuel and ignition parameters at differing loads. It would be interesting to see if its more economical with a turbo as opposed to N/A especially when under the differing load conditions of the sea, and also interesting would be how to solve the turbo drain problem when you have the motor trimmed right up. Best of luck with it, seems like so much fun!

FYI, I had a friend majorly injured by doing what the guy in the back of the boat is doing-making motor adjustments. The boat hit a wave, he lost grip on the seat and natural reaction when you feel like you're getting thrown out of the boat...he grabbed the engine. He slid down the engine and you could see the propeller slice marks on his leg (and prob personal parts-but they were left in the water). Years later he had to have that leg amputated. Do yourself a favor and use a harness if you're making adjustments on the engine.

Pretty impressive for a couple kids. Tuning can make our break a turbo. The motor is already high in compression so your gonna need to pull probably 10 degrees of timing. Run e85 or 100 octane to keep it safe. Add fuel to get your afr right and that motor should get after it pretty good if turbos are the right size. Also you got the hull deep in the water. Trim up until your just riding on the last foot of the stern and it will make a huge difference.

While I absolutely LOVE how you guys are engineering that Honda 225 with turbos and custom parts, great job on parts manufacturing and engineering. But there is no way that engine is pushing 500 HP. That boat probably runs 40 MPH on a totally stock 4 stroke 225. If that engine pushed out even close to 500 HP the boat would be 60+ MPH. Case in point I had a 30' boat with twin 250 Evinrudes completely stock and it was a 64 MPH boat. If I were getting 500 HP from a single engine it would have been even faster due to less weight and lower unit drag.

Power is fairly irrelevant on a boat once you get to a point. Because you can only spin a prop so fast in water before the water can’t keep up and an air bubble forms around the prop and you go nowhere. The difference come from the different props. They need to try a new prop I think

  • @georgedoolittle7574
    @georgedoolittle7574 4 года назад

I think the reason outboards don't go turbo is because of possible use on salt water as highly destructive. Having said that it's not like fresh water and salt water editions for motors aren't already being made so you're spot on that the entire Industry is filled with gas guzzling buffoons going on forever now who have now migrated to the importance of being a 4 stroke gas guzzling buffoon.

Something I've read is that journal-bearing turbos are better suited for long hauls and static RPM and load. Another thing; you could do a single, twin-scroll turbo for i4 or v6 engines and it would be a bit simpler on piping and since you're sizing the turbo "small" compared to race-car guys since you're going for torque and have limited RPM on a boat motor anyway, you shouldn't have to worry about turbo lag or spool. Plus, it'll sound cooler.
Another thing you could do is plumb an additional intake from the waterline for water injection, which if you do it right with the right "fineness" of injector, is basically free octane rating. Look up David Vizard for more info.

They’re obviously still testing it and I would imagine want to test how it performs at lower RPM’s first. Everyone saying their stock boat or this boat stock is faster or as fast. Yea. At WOT. They were getting speeds of 38-44 mph at almost 2000rpm less than WOT of the stock motor. Kids are working on something cool for a school project and all the keyboard warriors think it’s trash because they didn’t pin it the first time out and blow it up. It would seem these kids are a lot smarts than most criticizing them.

    Test 1: 5lb of boost, 20" prop pitch @ 3500 rpm = 38mph
Test 2: increase boost by 140%, prop pitch by 3" and revs by 9%
For only a 5mph speed increase?
I'm not sure that adds up. Forget the turbo, it doesn't really matter but that prop change and an extra 1000 rpm should give more than 5mph shouldn't it?

Mike Sokolow and? That’s WOT on a lighter boat. They didn’t run this over 4500rpm. The engine has a max operating rpm over 6000rpm. They’re clearly in the early stages of water testing this.

I'm shocked that thing isn't much faster. One of my fishing boats is a little 17 foot aluminum boat with a 50 horse motor on it and it does 40 miles an hour

Cool idea, but I'm sure gearing and prop adjustments are needed. Really not much different to stock setup.

So what we just saw was making 335hp more than likely by math. Perfect conditions 450hp at the prop IF you can get the rpms up to make the power lol

Why no WOT? Those viewing this who know how boats work would love to see more info on prop selection and such. Fun project. Seems like the high load an outboard runs at, displacement would trump boost systems (and I believe cars run in an opposite regime).

To everyone saying he needs to change gearing or trim up... these are not wide open throttle number probably not even close, the rpms go up when he adds a higher pitch prop, I don’t know why he didn’t do wide open pulls, I’m assuming it’s so he didn’t break the stock lower unit, but that’s not how pitch works when you add pitch your rpm goes down, he is throttling it him self it’s not a motor thing

We had all of 15 minutes of actual tune time. Tuning something like this takes weeks for dynamic testing. Knock sensor was completely turned off and I saw the boost climb to 13.5 and decided to hold it off there and calibrate the tables below that rpm

wait something doesn't add up. if it made 225 on atmospheric pressure then it should make 500 at around 14.7-15psi of boost. double the pressure, double the air, double the power. maybe a little more boost to deal with air density loss due to heat.
but 12? you should be around...
    ((12+14.7)/14.7)*225 = 408.7 hp tops
unless you guys did something else I'm not seeing? IDK check my math
or maybe the title means that it's 500hp capable?

Hate to say my 20’ 4,000 lb Grady Overnighter with a Suzuki DT225 (normally aspirated), 20 pitch prop will top out at 48 mph (gps verified).
You should be doing at least 60 with your setup.
Start looking at different pitch props, rpm, and ignition. For what you put into it, it should be doing a lot better.

You need to use the power trim, you are forcing the bow down in this video. Trim the bow upp and you will get more speed and higher rpm.
