To all who suffer from peripheral neuropathy: Be sure to see a peripheral nerve surgeon to rule out entrapment neuropathy even if spinal stenosis has been ruled out. Five years ago I was told by five neurologists at major medical schools in Chicago that I had an incurable, idiopathic peripheral neuropathy and that my "axons were dying back" caused by some undiagnosed metabolic disease. After over three thousand hours of research and by refusing to accept this diagnosis I found a peripheral nerve surgeon who treats entrapment neuropathies and this has given me hope. I have learned that neurologists and MD's are ignorant of peripheral nerve anatomy and think that the only cause of entrapment neuropathies involves the spine. This is very unfortunate and is the reason why thousands of people suffer pain, disability and even amputation as a result of this ignorance. I will follow up on this thread one way or the other, but from what I have read there are many causes of lower limb neuropathies no matter what the cause (even diabetic neuropathies) that can be helped by nerve entrapment surgery in the hips, legs and ankles. I learned this by reading papers by Dr Lee Dellon who is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medical School and on Dr. Tim Tollestrup's website (he is a peripheral nerve surgeon in Nevada who trained under Dr. Lee Dellon). Good luck and don't give up! Many of us can get our lives back with proper treatment.

@@Ms_Jetta sorry to read this. Sadly, it gets worse, mine started after the covid vax in May 2021 and was just in my feet but now I have the burning up my legs. It can apparently affect the digestive system as well as causing incontinence, oh joy. I also was on a medicinal cannabis trial but found the the THC made things worse in that my feet felt even more spongy and was causing me to be even more unsteady on my feet. It really is a vile disease. I am on a facebook group and some of the members are only in their twenties and thirties.

If you have a neurologist ask for a muscle biopsy to see if you have small fiber peripheral neuropathy. That is what I was diagnosed with. They can only diagnose it correctly with a muscle biopsy. The EMG testing that they do does not always show a positive result. It didn’t in my case, and most often times doesn’t. It took me over 2 years to get diagnosed correctly! Dr thought I had MS or a different autoimmune disorder. I hope you get a diagnosis soon 🙏🏻❤️

Jedd Olsen I am not the original poster but I am a Type 1 insulin dependent diabetic who has been on a low carb diet for 39 years and I can say unequivocally that it has made a world of difference!! Diabetes caused neuropathy is directly related to blood sugar levels: the higher the levels the more rapid the progression of the neuropathy! Keeping sugar levels as normal as possible is the absolute key to minimizing neuropathy' painful and debilitating side effects. Diabetics, both Type 1 & Type 2, are simply unable to process sugar and other rapidly absorbed carbohydrates quickly, even when injecting insulin or taking oral hypoglycemics like metformin, etc. So if you eat foods containing high levels of sugar/carbohydrates blood sugar levels soar and neuropathy gets worse! The plan I follow was developed in the late 1970s by a doctor suffering from Type 1 diabetes. His name is Richard K Bernstein and he has written several excellent books describing his program and explaining how best to keep blood sugar levels within normal ranges. At times I am able to keep my bG in the 80-100 mg/dl range for days at a time. My A1c levels range between 5 & 6 and I've been an insulin dependent diabetic since 1971. Thousands of diabetics around the world have used Bernstein's plan to achieve excellent blood glucose control. It requires discipline but it works!

So I got concerned n start cutting back on fat, I really need to look again I will look at the book u mention . See if it’s different from low carb diet, I must be doing something wrong as many people on RUclips say they reverse their diabetes. With low carbs .

I realize this video was posted 4 years ago but I’d like to add that cancer and chemotherapy invite PN. I was diagnosed with PN in my feet (NON-diabetic) before my cancer and chemo.
Although it was just an unsettling feeling it was bearable. Oncologists will confirm that PN symptoms will most likely occur or, increase.
Fatigue from treatment - even a year later - along with the addition of PN worsening (for me)has taken its toll! Thanks for sharing your exercises…I’m a fan!❤

I use a very simple massager - for me it's tingling / numbness / stiffness in my toes, calves, around me knees. It's a 2 liter coke bottle, half fill it with room temperature water, then half fill with boiling water - then it's a comfortably warm temperature.
I roll it down from upper thigh to ankle, both sides, then extra rolling on sides of knees and then behind knees and down calves. I sometimes sleep with it holding my feet vertical (in the colder months, obv. sleeping on back) - this might help you.
I have also balanced on one leg and rolled the raised foot over it, using my body weight to massage under the foot. Or sit up in bed, knees bent, and roll the foot over it. You could try both of these from the underside of the foot.
But specificall for the toes and front of foot, you cold try rolling it over the top of the foot

I got it on my hands first. My hands are weak. My feet feel numb. My hands hurt. My hands hurt if I use them a lot. I get rid of the pain for some time by running warm water on them. Putting my hands in a cold ice water tub before I go to sleep, helps quite a bit. Warm water, and hand/finger stretches during the day help a lot.
This condition sucks. I hope it's reversible. I've already lost 35 pounds since starting 3 months ago(home cooking and gym), so hopefully it'll go away and heal as I lose more weight. Gonna start keto really soon. I feel like it will help me lose weight faster, and of course lower my complex carbs intake, which will help with the neuropathy.

Could someone please answer this question? My brother who is 44 and I'm 40 have a weird condition where at night, we both have to sleep with the covers off of our lower legs. Having covers over our legs at night causes a weird tingling hot, numb and uncomfortable sensation in lower legs. If sleeping with just a sheet over them it improves alot. But getting up in the morning it literally is difficult to walk. Throughout the day it seems to get better. I don't have health insurance. Could someone give me an idea what this could be? Is it lower lumbar related? Circulation related? It's weird that symptoms are less bad when not sleeping with a blanked over the legs.

No mention of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, no known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type A? This is a fairly common occurrence following a break or sprain in an extremity, and it involves peripheral neuropathy. I am now experiencing this for the third time in my life. In between I had it totally under control through exercise, especially weight training and some dietary restrictions (no alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar or red meat). Lack of access to the gym during the pandemic combined with with a more sedentary lifestyle during COVID, followed by a sprained ankle, left me vulnerable to Round 3 with this formidable opponent, 16 years after Round 2. The morale of the story: don’t let your guard down.

I do have it in my feet and legs to knees now as it is incurable and progressive. Allodynia is really , really painful, no socks, no shoes, can’t even take the sheets or covers. It involves the nerves but in a very different way, through the sympathetic nervous system. Mine began with s simple sprained left ankle, it healed but the pain never went away, just got much, much worse as the nerves never stop firing pain signals to the brain. Nothing ever gets numb like you are talking about here. Please help if you can . It’s also known as RSD . Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Thank you so much !

I'm no expert or anything, but have you tried diaphramatic breathing and meditation for the pain? Meditation has reduced my chronic pain by about 70 - 80 %. Diaphramatic breathing relaxes the muscles, and, with time ( doesn't appear to make a difference in the first few weeks, but it IS working), the meditation stimulates the vagus nerve, and actually switches off the thalamus, which is responsible for messages of pain reception. I still get pain at the last 4 or so hours of the day, when I've "forgotten" how to breathe and aren't relaxed, but the pain is no longer 24/7. Good luck, and I hope you find some relief. (Tip, easiest way to stimulate the vagus nerve apart from the breathing I mentioned, is to wet your lips, and rub them with your fingers. No, really!)

I go to PT once a week and work out in the pool. Exercises help my general physical well being. Doesn’t do a damn thing for the pain or the progression. I’ve slowed the progression by quitting alcohol. The massager is the worst thing you can do for neuropathy, it excites the nerves and creates whole new pathways for the pain. But then again, this is the most painful thing you can have (McGill University Pain Scale). Absolutely excruciating. No such thing as nerve regeneration after it advances to a certain point, only a living hell. Thanks for trying to be funny but this thing is so miserable, it sounded like you were mocking the disease. It’s worse than anything you could imagine x100. And I’m tough.
