Josh bought this 1984 Ford Bronco II out of a storage unit for $700. An amazing deal since a brand new Holley carburetor and everything to convert it from the old Ford fuel injection to a distributor was there as well. We got it swapped over running in a couple of days, but now it's leaking oil all over his driveway. Today we're going to tackle a bunch of those problems and make it stop correctly.

I'll take my Jeep I owned a bronco ll in the 90s and their garbage. I was always having to replace bushings because of how bad that twin i-beam suspension was. Plus I went with wider rims and tires because how tippy it was, I traded it for a Ford Explorer which was that much better. So I'll stick with Jeep and it's annoying death wobble 🤣

couple of facts about the Bronco II. Due to the idle control (not sure if it was the same for all years), it would idle up ANY hill that was possible to climb. Put it in 4 low and it would idle up ANYTHING until it lost traction. On more than a few occasions, we would all get out and push it through mud/sand while it was chugging along in 2nd gear at 3mph and then hop back in without taking it out of gear. Oh and it was a death trap. Heavy rain, flat parking lot. A friend backed out of a parking spot with 4 of us in his Bronco II, he wasnt going that fast, but spun the wheel all the way to the right in a normal way one would when backing out of a parking spot. Next thing we know, we are upside down, roof was collapsing, windshield popped out etc. Nobody was hurt but we all thought someone had hit us or a tire blew out. Police actually checked the tire pressures and they were all correct. Witnesses said it was the craziest thing they had ever seen, slow moving vehicle and it just rolled over like someone pushed it over. Have fond memories of off roading in places it should not have been able to go but it was just too top heavy/softly sprung/narrow

Early Bronco IIs with the 2.8L Cologne V-6 weren't EFI, they had an electronically controlled carburetor that involved some ignition system madness in an attempt by Ford to make the engine run cleaner. Those Cologne V-6s are notorious for leaking oil through the rear main seal, front timing cover seal and the valve cover gaskets. Looks like a cool rig, have fun!

Found an '86 E. Bauer 4x4 for my son's first car in 1998. A4LD was in a perfect state of neutrality, it did nothing. North Texas since new, zero body rot. Under the oxidation was a pretty sharp looking dark blue Eddie Bauer that had enough sweat equity to make a great first car for my kid. I really liked driving that thing, had the tightest turning circle of anything I've owned.

  • @rockymountainjazzfan1822
    @rockymountainjazzfan1822 3 года назад

I had an "85 Bronco II. The '84 and '85 BIIs had carburetors, which were really vapor-lock prone. The manual transmissions were under-geared for the 2.8 V6 that had very little low-RPM torque. The factory front shocks were really weak and contributed to the BIIs being roll-over prone. Putting on much heavier duty front shocks stiffened the suspension a lot and cured a lot of the tippy characteristics. The Dana 28 front twin-traction beam axle was actually pretty tough, as was the rear axle (mine had a factory limited-slip rear differential). The Bronco II was actually a fair off-roader, its poor low RPM torque (which the automatic transmission did compensate for to a degree) and somewhat paltry ground clearance being its main limitations. Compensating some for that was its excellent turning radius and maneuverability. I took mine over some of the toughest trails in the Rockies, often keeping up with FJ-40 Land Cruisers. I drove the Bronco II for a nearly a decade and a lot of miles. It was still running great when I sold it. The 1989-90 Bronco II was probably the best--it had the 2.9 fuel-injected V6 and a good automatic transmission.

I have two B2, 89 & 90. I get more compliments on them. The 90 I built for off road the 89 I'm building as a sleeper with a 1988 T bird turbo coupe 3.2L turbo engine. Both have built A4LD, a great reliable trans if built with good components. The TTB when done up correctly works great. I recommend not installing lift brackets on the TTB, it will massively screws up the CG. Great little truck, I but 1.5" spacers on the wheels, I've experienced zero tipping issues even off road. Great deal on the truck, everyone wants these. Worst part is the rust, attack it now or have major regrets later.

So this is the new "JR & Josh talk about cars they already fixed" show?
I worked at a Ford dealer when those were still pretty new so I don't have many fond memories. Valve clatter, valve cover gasket leaks, cracked exhaust manifolds, crappy ignition modules, and the plastic vacuum lines that became brittle after 5-6 years. That era of Ford was just a nightmare. But it did keep mechanics busy.

People would laugh at me until I went up every hill their Jeeps did. You are so lucky. I wish I still had mine. Electrical problems got mine and I donated it to charity. It had some rust but not much. I have a Tacoma and have had Land Cruisers in the past. Enjoy this wonderful truck that got Corvair treatment from the government because they had roll over issues. Yes they did because they were lifted from the factory. You can't do that now but this is a gem.

Definitely the older Bronco II. Simple, light, reliable and fun. What's not to like? Thanks JRGo.

A Bronco 2 that has not rolled over yet? Fascinating!! Then again, no real corners in Kansas, and its flat.

that thing is sweet. This proves there are still deals like this out there! I see things like this once in a while on FB marketplace but I always think its a scam to get my Email or phone number so I dont usually call them. I need to have a Google voice number set up for that type of thing.

Its called a map light. And yes they are in all air planes. Atleast all of the military aircraft that I have worked on. Sweet find on this old Bronco. 👍

If it is leaking from the seals check the pcv passages in the base of the carb. They tend to clog making the PCV not work which leads to building pressure in the crank case.

The Eddie Bauer edition of these featured the little air compressor lumbar support in the front seats! No other part of those seats had power adjustments.

Just for old times sake when Josh visits, can you put a TV in the shot running the Roku screensaver? I'm just nostalgic for the old days🙂

Jooooooooosh, GREAT to see you back again! The Dynamic Duo wrenchin in the new shop❗️ Suh-Weet ‼️ Man, what a great steal. Hmmm, 🤔 let’s think about this for a moment, a sub $2K all wheel drive Bronco II in great shape (and hardly seen anymore) OR, a brand new “Bronco” that costs more than 20 times that amount. Hard choice there.

I wish I had my old 84 Bronco II. Mine was the Eddie Bauer edition and I remember all the fun times I had in mine. I will say mine had a bit of a lift and larger tires with that little V6 with a 5 speed standard but it could move.

My dad had one of these when I was growing up, it was a Eddie Bauer edition with a manual transmission. The "airplane light" is also known as the "dope scope"

Neat little trucks. Very nimble. Once sorted, usually very reliable, too. Always wondered what it would be like with a late 80s Crown Vic Police Interceptor 351 under the hood. Have to upgrade the transfer case and driveshafts thanks to the 390lb/ft of torque, but could really increase both performance and fuel economy.

I had one of those, they say the Ford Bronco II flips at 35mph. Allow me say this from personal experience, its not true. I took turns in it at 50mph never flipped over not once. That truck is great bulletproof. I slid in the rain, sideswiped a civic, ripped it open like a can opener, and all I got was a small dent on the metal bumper. I did fit a whole 2jzgte motor and transmission in the trunk of it for my SC300 project but had to replace the shocks afterwards as i blew them out.
